Grade Point Average (GPA) and Class Rank are calculated with two separate point systems. GPA Calculation GPA is computed using the 4.0 scale point system. Beginning with grade 9, all subjects, whether passed or failed, are included in the computation. Honors classes are not weighted. Advanced Placement (AP) classes are weighted by 1.0 points on this scale at the end of the calendar year. 21st Century Learning Expectations credits do not affect a student’s GPA. Class Rank Class rank is computed for each graduating class on a percentage system using the numerical average on a 100 point scale. All students are included in the compilation of rank in class, except foreign exchange students. AP classes are weighted at year end. Any seniors taking AP classes in the senior year will not have the weighting applied toward class rank, nor will the weighting be included on any transcripts requested before the end of the senior year. AP classes are weighted by 10 points on this scale. 21st Century Learning Expectations credits do not affect a student’s Rank. st

Diplomas Newport High School requires 23 credits for graduation with a Standard Diploma, 3 more credits than the NH State Requirements. Newport High School also offers a Diploma with Distinction and participates in the New Hampshire Scholars program. These diplomas each require 26 credits with a minimum course grade of 85 for 23 credits and passing grades in all State and locally required classes. In addition, each student must complete 40 hours community service as a graduation requirement.
CURRICULUM Newport High School offers comprehensive curricula including traditional academic courses, business, career and technical education.
Virtual Learning Academy Charter School (VLACS) is a variety of internet-based classes offered to all high school students to supplement our current curriculum.
This year NHS is on a seven period day schedule with year-long and semester classes for grades 9-12. Classes are 57 minutes in length. Newport High School has the opportunity for students to earn .25 credits for demonstrating competencies in 21st Century Skills. Students may earn up to 6 content credits and 1.5 21st Century Skills credits per year.
Extended Learning Opportunities (ELOs) are planned in advance and provide multiple ways for students to learn outside of the classroom to achieve credit toward high school graduation. ELOs offer the student a highly qualified teacher and/or community partner to demonstrate competencies outside the traditional classroom.
Advanced Placement Classes are offered for English, Calculus and US History. Honors Classes are offered for: Economics, Biology, Earth Space Science, Physical Science, Chemistry, Environmental Studies, and Physics. A-level English classes are honors and college preparatory classes with teacher recommendation required for class selection. The Sugar River Valley Regional Technical Center adds 13 additional programs to our curricula via two campuses, one located at Newport High school and the other in Claremont, NH. The Project Lead the Way Pathway to Engineering program is a sequence of courses, which follows a proven real-world problem solving approach to learning. Students learn and apply the design process, acquire strong teamwork and communication proficiency and develop organizational, critical thinking, and problem solving skills. The Running Start Program is a partnership between the Community Colleges of NH and high schools to give students an opportunity to take college courses for college credit while also completing the requirements for high school graduation. Courses taught through the Running Start program are college courses taught at the high school by credentialed high school faculty as a part of the daily class schedule.
Student Placement Programs offer real-world experiences which allow students an opportunity to enhance the knowledge and skills they have acquired in the classroom and apply it to a position within a local business. The experience for each student is managed by a classroom teacher, a work-site mentor, and school counselor or program coordinator. Student placement opportunities may include internships, job shadowing, work-based learning or extended learning opportunities. Credit is determined on an individual basis. Area College Opportunities are where students may take courses at Dartmouth College, Lebanon College, Colby Sawyer and River Valley Community College if scheduling permits. Students must provide their own transportation.
