Director’s message

Prof. Narendra M Agrawal Chairperson, PGSEM INDIAN INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT BANGALORE

PROFESSOR speak The vision at PGSEM has been one of developing leaders who combine technical expertise with business management skills for technology intensive enterprises. During the last ten years IIMB has successfully delivered on this promise. Look forward to increasing innovative entrepreneurship and global leadership positions from PGSEM graduates in the future. Prof. S. Krishna, Founder Chairperson, PGSEM

If you were to join the FPM program after PGSEM, you will be given exception for the core program, just like the PGP students. Within the limits of scheduling, lots of electives are offered jointly to PGSEM and PGP. So in essence you are getting the rigor of the PGP, while you continue to work.

What is PGSEM? The Post-Graduate Program in Software Enterprise Management leading to a Post-Graduate Diploma in Software Enterprise Management is a graduate program for working executives. It caters to professionals working in the software and information technology industry in India. The PGSEM endeavors to provide the most current and up to date executive general management education to middle and senior professionals who seek to pursue a career in management. The program aims to transform IT and software professionals with strong technical knowledge to business leaders with equally strong management knowledge and a global perspective. • Flexible duration of 2.5 to 6 years. • Renowned and experienced faculty • Benefit of gaining new perspectives and wider peer networks • Academic rigour, choice of electives • 96 credits, approx 1000 hours of classroom contact • Student exchange programs in partnership with leading global business schools • Interaction with industry through numerous projects, events, sessions and forums • Waiver for doctoral programs The PGSEM is targeted at working professionals. There are several distinctive features of the program that ensure the rigor of a regular post graduate management program is met without compromising the career responsibilities of its participants.

Prof. Abhoy K. Ojha Former Chairperson, PGSEM

From the institute’s point of view, the design, content & expectations wise, there is no difference between PGP and PGSEM. We make that statement even in our PGSEM certificate. Prof. Rajendra Bandi Former Chairperson, PGSEM

Traditionally, managers in the IT sector are technologists, who have risen up the ranks with little or no formal training. Their mechanical style of execution can limit the progress of an organisation. The PGSEM transforms the technologist into a well-rounded professional, who can deliver competently in an increasingly global business context. PGSEM alumni appreciate the clarity that their education provides them to realise their organisational as well as personal aspirations. Prof. Shankar Venkatagiri Former Chairperson, PGSEM

INDIAN INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT BANGALORE

The PROGRAM & BENEFITS The program has been designed in such a way that a participant can graduate with the diploma at the end of two and a half academic years, even while continuing to work at his/her regular place of employment. Each academic year is subdivided into four quarters of eleven weeks each. The regular course load in a quarter is three courses of three credits each. Participants normally have 9 hours of classroom contact per week, with classes scheduled on Friday mornings and Saturdays making it a Weekend Programme. Also considering the fact that a majority of the students work with clients based in the US, the classes conducted on Fridays are only in the morning hours, while on Saturdays classes are whole days. This is customized to industry requirements. I think we have an exceptional bunch of students who come into this program who have provided much needed thought leadership to the industry.

We thought what we really needed to do to help the IT industry grow into a global player was to provide our young engineers the bandwidth required to manage the company because what will differentiate a successful technical company and a global company was managerial bandwidth. So PGSEM was born. Even at the design stage we co-opted the industry in designing it and, as a consequence we had a number of innovations into this. First we realized that our software engineers are going to be busy during the week, so we can’t expect them given the kind growth industry was witnessing to leave their jobs and come into this program. Second, given that bulk of our students work with clients based in US, we designed the classes on the Friday to be conducted only in the morning and the whole of Saturday. We customized this to the requirements of the industry. I think we have an exceptional bunch of students who come into this program and who have provided much needed thought leadership to the industry. Prof. J Ramachandran BOC Chair Professor, Corporate Strategy

Entrepreneurial Ventures From PGSEMers With increasing domestic demand and corporate saturation, a growing number of IT professionals are finding entrepreneurship a shorter way to the top. For the Man (or Woman)-in-a-hurry, PGSEM is an automatic choice. PGSEM gives you the education, the confidence, a qualified peer network, student loans, paid internships among other incentives to support you in doing your own thing. Add to this the facilities that IIM Bangalore provides for the wannabe entrepreneur - Professors, incubation, angel investing, network opportunities and startup competitions. Below is some entrepreneur plain-speak, for those interested in having some serious fun.

Dhonuk (www.dhonuk.com) is an Indian Art ecosystem – online social network based. It provides an online space for creativity in the arts, and a platform to connect the artist and the artsumer (art consumer - organizational or individual)! My entrepreneurial journey has been fostered by the rich IIM Bangalore pedagogy. A cultural entrepreneurial venture, which I jumped into wholeheartedly thanks to the support systems inside IIMB, which has paved the way to contact and cultivate networks, gain advice from professors and cover all aspects of the venture sometimes through projects and surveys, and at other times through rigorous paper presentations and innocuous conversations. The institute gives you a place where you can nurture your ideas and bring them to life. Shamit Bagchi, PGSEM 2008, Founder Dhonuk I am co-founder of vRideAlong.com that aims to help people share a ride in a reliable, secure and convenient manner. Entrepreneurship related subjects in the PGSEM curriculum and the project component in these subjects helped me define and refine my startup’s business model and strategy. The insights shared by our Professors are really helpful. PGSEM also helped me in networking and connect with angel investors. Funding awaited! Parashar Shah, PGSEM 2008

CAREER METAMORPHOSIS

ENTREPRENEUR speak MeshLabsinc.com as a business entity started alongside my PGSEM course. The flexibility of the program allowed me to devote good concentrated time to my business. The best part of this arrangement is that the concepts developed in the class over weekends could be instantly internalized during the week in the startup. Playing essentially in the B2B environment, MeshLabs’s initiative was boosted by the support of NSRCEL-a IIMB effort to incubate startups. The overall experience was enriched by the peer network with varied technical and business capabilities. My journey is beautifully captured in these lines by Robert Frost, “& Miles to go before I sleep....” Shantanu Gudihal, PGSEM 2008, Co-founder MeshLabs

Adaptive Marketing – Product Management TRAINING CONSULTING OUTSOURCING Adaptive Marketing creates next generation product management and marketing professionals, critical catalysts for the fast growing IT product ecosystem in India. Enabling aspiring, new and existing PM/PMMs with pragmatic methodologies and field tested best practices, is critical as MNCs in India look at augmenting their technical execution with business focus and as Indian products go global. I took interest in technical sales and developed deep passion for product management (PM) and marketing (PMM). Having transitioned to PM role early on, I found PGSEM the right source of knowledge, skills and capabilities to enable my rapid growth and progression to leadership roles in business strategy and planning. During PGSEM, I developed greater interest in fundamental management research & science, inspiring me to explore a career in management teaching & research. Adaptive Marketing is an opportunity to pursue simultaneously my interests in teaching, research and consulting. Vishwanathan Sahasranamam – Career transformation note

If I was even considered out of all other candidates for this role compared to a lot of other candidates, it was all credits to IIMB. There is an inherent value being seen by employers for a graduate of PGSEM. PGSEM gave me strong foundation for the business concept, provided the oppurtunity to test that out with real life projects and gave me the academic experience of a life time. For me the best thing about PGSEM is people - Faculty and Students. The quality of Faculty is unmatched and it is really an invigorating experience to study with such an exceptional peer group.

COMMENTS BY STUDENTS PGSEM is a well designed course for professionals who want to develop business acumen while working in parallel. The course helped me not only understand the business environment in India and abroad but the underlying dynamics of doing business. The learning from the experienced faculty members at one of the best business school is fabulous but one of biggest advantage PGSEM provides is the opportunity of learning from classmates who come with rich experiences in diverse filed. - Somnath Sinha Mahapatra

“PGSEM offers the same coverage, exposure & learning that a full-time MBA does, while also provides the PGSEM student an opportunity to reinforce & internalize his takeaways through implementation & validation at his workplace. Further, the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions with IIM-B professors who have mastered the art of imparting world-class education, and with PGSEM class-mates who are themselves stalwarts in the IT domain, enables the double-learning loop and enhances the overall effectiveness of classroom education. In my opinion, in a country poised to become super-power in the service industry, PGSEM is a symbol of innovation in management & business education.” – Avnish Kshatriya

The primary reason, why I joined PGSEM, was to move into the role of product management in the IT industry. PGSEM provided me the building blocks for this transition. Even after the transition I have been able to tailor the electives to help me grow in the role. The program is ideal for professionals who are willing to apply the theory taught in the classroom to their everyday work.

PGSEM has broadened my horizon, helped me to ask right questions and provided the immense network of highly energetic & intelligent professionals in the industry. The experience at the institute, the class discussions and interaction with professors has been amazing. The program structure has allowed me to apply the learnings almost immediately at work. – Saurabh Jain

Being a part time management program, PGSEM not only taught me business management skills but also allowed me to put them to practice in real world. I could also learn life management skills through juggling between family, work and studies for three years. In short, by pursuing PGSEM, I think I am better prepared to handle future challenges, both professional and personal. – Ashok Bhat Exposure and perspective it gave in terms of the different aspects involved in the functioning of a Corporate, which I could take to work and apply it from the very next day! – Hema Mohan

It made me plumb the depths of my endurance and made me do things that I never thought I am capable of. At any point in time I am juggling the responsibilities of work, family and IIMB academic rigor - each of which an extremely timeand-energy consuming responsibility, but then again I just have 2 hands and 24 hours in a day! PGSEM taught me the art of balancing the pressures of all three against seemingly impossible odds and survive each day somehow!! – Ritabarata Bhaumik

It is wonderful to be associated with some of the best minds in the industry It is wonderful to be part of such a prestigious institute and listen to some truly great thoughts from the illustrious faculty. It helps me evaluate my areas of interests and gives a direction to my thoughts on who I would like to be. – Karthik Swaminathan

“With PGSEM, academics are just one part of the story. After a long time I was reconnected back to a whole plethora of extra curricular activities including Biz Fests, Cultural Fests and Inter-IIM sports meets. All this makes you feel charged up and younger by many years. I got opportunity to travel to, as well as host different IIM’s as a part of IIMB sports fraternity. The passion with which these events are contested gives you a defining experience for life. Apart from this, I believe, the number of friends across IIMs and across Programs that I have made during this whole journey will always remain a precious asset of my life.” Gulprit Singh, Student PGSEM 2008

COURSE STRUCTURE Each academic year is subdivided into four quarters of eleven weeks each. The regular course load in a quarter is three courses of three credits each. Each three-credit course consists of 30 hours of classroom contact. Participants normally have 9 hours of classroom contact per week, with classes scheduled on Friday mornings and Saturdays. In special cases, students are allowed to increase their load by taking courses they have missed/failed in earlier quarters, or by undertaking projects in addition to regular classes. After completion of the first year, participants have the flexibility to be away from the program for one or more quarters if necessitated by work-related assignments. The participant is required to complete 96 credits including both core and elective courses within a maximum of six academic years.

The student accumulates 30 credits in the first year as he goes through the stipulated core(compulsory)courses over the four quarters in the first year. Participants are expected to take electives for the remaining credits during the next six quarters. During the subsequent quarters students are allowed to chose any number of credits in a particular quarter, upto a maximum of 12. In addition to the core and elective courses, participants are required to do a compulsory three credit individual project on any industry of interest in order to gain domain experience. They can also do an additional project course for three credits. Participants of the PGSEM, with the approval of their employers, can avail of exchange opportunities with foreign universities (universities with which IIMB has an exchange agreement). Drawn from among the best minds in the country, they possess distinguished academic credentials and share among themselves a wealth of industry experience. Regularly working with leading companies, government organizations and industry consultants, they create a vast reservoir of real-world knowledge that the participants can leverage. Immersed in cutting edge research, the classrooms become sounding boards for their ideas on everything from global macroeconomics to culture parity in organizations.

Collectively having hundreds of research publications to their credit and having rich experience in consultancy engagements with the leading software firms in the country, the faculty is well versed in the micro and macro realities of the software industry. Their knowledge coupled with expertise in theoretical frameworks creates an enriched atmosphere for learning. PGSEM participants, being industry practitioners themselves, are ideally positioned to gain maximum value in an environment like this.

International Exposure Faculty members regularly don the role of guest faculty at prominent B-schools across the world. IIMB faculty delivering guest lectures at Ivy League universities is not uncommon. Combined with the diverse international exposure that PGSEM participants bring into the program, this ensures that every discussion has a global perspective.

The PGSEM programme provides distinctiveness to IIM Bangalore. There is no other programme in India and perhaps anywhere in the world focused on the needs of the IT industry that is conducted with such discipline and exacting standards. PGSEM’s rigorous selection process ensures that the students are bright and keen learners who represent the leading edge of the Indian industry. The programme facilitates development of managerial and scholarly competencies so that the students emerge competent and confident to win fairly in a globally competitive world.
