DCA Team Roadtrip Buddy Group Mission

Fellow Rotarians, it is always good to mix fun, service and fellowship as we serve in Rotary. This is the easiest way to enjoy Rotary and to shed off the stress accumulated during a normal working week. The Breezers had

a taste of this last weekend when on the invitation of our Charter Secretary, we stormed Busoga land and lit up Rotary. It all started with a watsapp message from the ever joking Grace Nabaggala inviting us to visit Jinja, where she is currently based as state prosecutor. Many a Breezer responded positively, but determining a date took some time as many of us had to travel to Dar for the DCA. Soon we agreed that end of May is the perfect weekend for us to unwind, when members pockets are bulging with monthly remittances. We thought it would be a good idea to share Rotary with the underprivileged and soon Grace identified Amani Babies Home. In

our usual generous style, a budget was drawn up and soon goodies were flying around for the children and their “mothers” to enjoy. I must confess, this was my first time to visit a babies home!! I was amazed by the love and care that Dennil and her team devote to these young souls!! With over Cont’d to page 2

DCA TEAM ROADTRIP

A word from the Charter President from page 1

Rtn Dr Godfrey Sihudu Bwire

Last week I started the story of the Muyenga Breeze team that traveled to the 90th DCA by road. This team wasaptly baptized DCA team RoadTrip. We ended when I had driven into a fuel station at Namanve to wait for the rest of the team in the van. When the team arrived chauffeured RtnPatro , I was surprised to see only three Rotarians in the van. The biggest surprise was the absence of SK, he had been the architect of the trip literary, so for him to miss the trip was not fathomable. I immediately inquired the whereabouts of SK, that is when I was assured that the guy is a “snake”. I was assured all along the guy had been playing games with us and had no intensions of making the road trip. In fact I was informed he was deep Cont’d to page 8 2 2

fifty children aged between zero to five years, Amani children’s home, is a home indeed. Very neat, organized, quiet, amiable and natural. With a few croilers in the backyard, donated by our Grace, the children are assured of an egg at breakfast every morning. The goats’ project is on its way to assure children of milk every time they take tea or porridge. The children are so innocent and yet so happy to receive visitors and sing for them, oh how great it is to be a Rotarian. It offers the perfect opportunity to reach out to humanity and derive true satisfaction from being human!! In true Breeze style we hit the club later that evening and spent a lovely Sunday mid morning to afternoon on River Nile. Loaded with fish, drinks, music and an excited Captain, Breezers enjoyed true Jinja hospitality at Rumours on the Nile and Samuka Island. Great thanks go to Rtn. Grace Nabaggala and all Breezers that turned up for the service, fun and fellowship we had throughout the weekend. Let us grow this camaraderie further as it a sure way to keep our members interested in Rotary.

EVERY CHILD IS AN UNTOLD STORY A Child is a gift from God. ‘Sauti Sol’ my favorite Kenyan band just dropped the latest hit ‘Nerea’ .In the song a man is pleading with his woman not to abort his child ,and he says when God gives a child ,it comes with its own blessings , You never know he could be the next Obama, Kagame, Jaramogi Odinga, Rudisha and other successful people….deep truck .A child could hug you, smile with you or even talk to you regardless of whether it knows you or not.Luke 18:16 says “But Jesus called for them, saying, “Permit the children to come to Me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. “Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all.” The Rotary Club kampala Muyenga Breeze visited the Amani Childrens Home last weekend and we have to thank our very own Charter Secretary for organizing it, not forgetting Director Service for coming up with the idea. It was a home hospitality at Graces’ home but the suggestion to visit a home was an added spice. Indeed

it’s amazing how things develop from Watsup chats. Amani…..when I first heard of the name, I said to myself ‘peace’. That is the meaning of Amani in Kiswahili. Members contributed to the gifts for the Children while those who couldn’t make it for one reason or the other, didn’t come empty handed. It all started with a drive to Jinja and we all linked up at Graces’ home in order to move together with the spirit of solidarity to the Children’s home. We were warmly welcomed and the first thing I no-

ticed was a writing on the wall…… “Every child is an Untold Story”….. Powerful, I thought. After having lunch Ms. Danyne Bharj, the Director of the home took us through the rich history of how the home was started. It was nice to hear that she had ever volunteered at Kampala Pentecostal Church “watoto” children’s homes before she started out. Bearing in mind that Watoto village homes are many and with that experience I think it was good for her to take it up especially in jinja. She was strong and vibrant and even though she was heavily pregnant with the help and support from staff and her family they took us through the home and we got to see what activities took place in the home. It was such an organized Orphanage with buckets marked in blank print with every child’s name with their belongings and toys and their mothers taking good care of the little ones who at the time, were sleeping soundly like angels. It was an awesome experiCont’d to page 5

Last weekend on Saturday

Mutalyebwa Abraham Vice President Rotaract Club of Mengo.

I had an opportunity to engage with Interactors and discuss about how they serve Humanity. The Interactors of Gayaza high ,Namagunga and kings College Buddo had their Annual Joint

Project of Painting Kasangati Health Centre with the support of Rotaractors from Mulago, Kampala City , Makerere University and Mengo together with their Mother Club the Rotary Club of Kampala. The project was dubbed “ REACH YOUR COMMUNITY”. The Students participated in painting of the school as a way of giving back to the Community Around. They were happy to paint the Health Facility because that was the option they had as a way of giving back. They got their hands dirty by Sweeping and cleaning

the Compound of the Health Facility , Sanding the walls and finally Painting which was a Success and it made me recall my days when i was an INTERACTOR in High School. After all that we went to Gayaza high school and had fellowship as a way of learning how they conduct fellowship ,encourage them to read hard and also to become Rotaractors like some of us. As a Rotaractor was glad to be part of the interactors who showed the residents of kasangati that they are the Gift to the World.

EVERY CHILD IS AN UNTOLD STORY

Amani children singing for the Breezers taken care of properly in terms of school fees and others they try to follow up and ence.We got to know that some children are brought in help. At least this made me warm up. Such stories can because their parents can’t make you cry most of us just take care of them at all and held our tears. The director in one instance a child was took us through their current dropped at the gate by its mother. We got also to know and ongoing projects and breezers pledged to support that at the age of five, they are relocated to foster homes. the chicken project which I think was great idea since That, kind of made me sad because one isn’t assured the in that way the help can be best. But the director informed more long term. So much to say about that day thank us that where they are not from page 4

God for cameras as we took pictures to remind us of the visit. After four hours of fun with the children we were off to Grace’s Home for the Home hospitality which was pretty awesome and the next day a boat cruise to Samuka Island. That was the best weekend spent since this year begun for me ….A Shout out to all the breezers we should totally do that again……Cheers!!.

in the bushes of Luwero at that very moment. Now that we were only four on the trip I decided to do some figuring. While the Elgrand was roomier for the trip, it would not give the speed that the Forester would provide. I sold the idea to the rest of the team and it was instantly bought. So we transferred the luggage from the Elgrand to the Forester. We were by then running pretty late for a team that had planned to be in Nairobi before dark to allow checking into a hotel that will be convenient for our planned night escapades. So we quickly hit the road at about ten o’clock with Patro taking the initial control of the wheel. By 1 pm we were at the border at Busia having only stopped over at Najjembe in Mabira for people to grab some roadside roasted chicken thighs. With due respect to all of you hygiene freaks, these thighs are irresistible. As we approached the border we 8

were swamped by this mob of clearing agents each struggling to handle the vehicle clearance for us. Being the fair guy I am, I picked on the guy who had been the first to approach us and offered him the job. Save for the COMESA insurance that took some bit of time, the immigration clearing was pretty fast. I liked the Kenyan side which are no longer requires travelers to fill out those departure or arrival papers. Once we received the COMESA insurance for the vehicle we hit the road again. By now it was approaching 3 pm and the chicken

thighs we had gobbled at Najjembe seemed to have been digested pretty fast and the tummies were demanding for attention. A few kilometers out of Busia Kenya we spotted an eatery that looked like it may have good choma. We pulled in their parking and moved in to address our enzymes that seemed to be working in over drive. A meal of roasted goat with Ugaali, washed down with a cold tusker malt. Luckily enough in Kenya, the Tusker Malts are only sold in twos, so for some of us who love the frothy stuff, this was a very welcome development. The story continues next week.
