447 Objectives: Patient modeling for radiation dosimetry is undergoing a paradigm shift from existing anthropomorphic models to image-based models. For inclusion into the next release of OLINDA/EXM, we recently developed a new set of models of pregnant mother and fetus representing 3-month, 6-month and 9-month gestational periods. Methods: Using medical images as anatomical reference, we defined surface geometries for each organ and the whole body for both the mother and fetus. Image segmentations were performed to outline the organ boundaries to form a 3D wireframe that allows for anatomical comparison and conversion from voxels to surface representations, such as NURBS and polygons. We also directly adopted a number of polygonal models to facilitate the development. Organ masses of the fetuses and the mother were manually adjusted in accordance with the reference values given in the ICRP 89. The adjustment was done in 3D to avoid organ overlapping. Software was developed to convert the finished surface models into voxels that are implemented into the EGS4 and MCNPX Monte Carlo code systems for intercomparison and calculations of specific absorbed fractions (SAFs). Results: SAFs for discrete photon and electron sources were calculated using standard energy values. These data were compared against two previously reported data sets by Stabin et al. who used stylized modeling and by Shi et al. who used partial-body CT images. Results indicate general agreement among these models. However, a number of source/target organs show large differences in the SAFs due to different anatomical definitions. This new set of mother/fetus models is also used for external dose calculations that are reported elsewhere. Conclusions: These newly developed mother/fetus models are anatomically realistic and easy for volume/mass adjustment. They are expected to become a part of the realistic phantom series in the next release of OLINDA/EXM. In addition, we plan to share these models and tools with the biomedical research community.
