iPad Applications for Teachers and Students What can we do with this thing besides check our Facebook?
Why the iPad? • resource sharing • innovation and creativity • research aid • communication • increased productivity / real-world prep • mobile learning • differentiated instruction
What part do we play? • Like any technology, it’s not a silver bullet. • Our teaching is a dynamic interaction between students, teachers, parents, and community.
• iPads assist in this interaction and aids in the transformation from director of learning to facilitator of learning.
Enough crap, get to the app! • All of the applications mentioned in this
presentation will be pre-loaded on all iPads at VHS (student and teacher) and can be requested at middle and elementary level.
• The majority of these apps are free, and can be downloaded at your convenience during this presentation.
Edmodo (free) • A secure place to connect and collaborate,
share content, access homework, grades, class discussions (blogs).
• Over 12,000,000 users • Great way to store documents and submit assignments.
• Can be used to “drive a classroom” digitally • “Dude, its Facebook for School” insert eye roll
Dropbox (free)
• Free Online storage service • Syncronize - any file you save to dropbox automatically saves to all other Dropbox devices (iPad, desktop, home, etc)
• Share - Public folder and Shared Folders • Teacher use: • Share files with grade level team. The file will always be the latest version
• Student submit work into dropbox • Students take notes and save to their dropbox • As close to local storage on the iPad that you can get!
Socrative (free) • Socrative is a student response system • Teachers log in through iPads and select an activity / create a quiz
• Student responses are visually represented for multiple choice, true/false and short answer questions.
• Reports can be viewed in real time or emailed as a .csv (spreadsheet)
Splashtop (Paid) • Easy way to access all of your content on your desktop from your iPad
• Use your favorite Windows Programs (SmartBoard)
• Flash workaround • Windows on the iPad, Steve Jobs would never approve. . .
Notability (paid) • Note-taking app • Supports text, images, audio records, contains a sketch pad
• Any PDF imports into Notability for editing • Can be used as a substitute for PowerPoints and great for worksheets
• Connects to Dropbox seamlessly
Educreations (Free) • Create and share video lessons with your iPad or browser (desktop).
• Recordable interactive whiteboard that captures voice and handwriting
• Students create accounts for your class • Stand alone and Edmodo-friendly
Khan Academy (Free) • Library of videos for K-12 math, science, and humanities
• 10 minute video lessons • Self-paced learning and valid assessment • Ability to set up classes and get reporting
Quizlet • Pre-made flashcard repository • Create customized vocabulary cards • Games and activities for repetition
Popplet lite (Free) • Create a wall of multimedia sticky notes to share with others
• Great for collages of information on a topic • Outlines and graphic organizers are now media-rich and engaging
QR Reader (Free) • Really easy way to read and create QR Codes
• Can be attached to any document with a web address.
• Scavenger hunts, field trips, answers to study guides etc
iMovie (Paid) • Create and edit movies that can be
recorded with iPad or other device
Apps We Don’t Get • FirePlace - yes, a fire on your iPad . . .that you pay for
• FamilyDoctor - Have a bad cough, diagnose yourself with every life threatening disease possible.
• Twilight: TheGame: I don’t think this even
deserves a comment. Really come on. It’s like a freaking Twilight quiz game. Dear god!
• StripMe - Strip club search - enough said!
