Fiber Designs by Ann Iris Five Petal Flameless Candle Votive Make an easy flameless candle votive using a purchased glass votive (or recycle a real candle glass) and treated fabric. Hi, I’m Ann Scott the owner of Fiber Designs by Ann here to share how to construct the iris using white fabric, wire and a straight stitch on a sewing machine. They may be made using any color fabric, batiks work best. These instructions are a supplement to my How-to video. For this lesson video and more visit my YouTube channel - https://www.youtube.com/user/FiberDesignsbyAnn and for more in depth courses go to https://curious.com/fiberdesignsbyann Tools and Materials – Fabric (100% cotton) that has been treated with Terial Magic Spray Stabilizer a piece about 12” x 2 ¼” for each petal – this project requires five petals. (Please see my How to Make a Poinsettia Art Quilt video to learn how I treat the fabric) The pattern – provided on my blog under the Patterns and Supply Lists tab Rotary cutter with a decorative blade and mat (I suggest using an old mat or the back side because the decorative blade may gouge the surface). Scissors – paper and fabric 22 gauge white cloth covered floral stem wire 1 3/8” wide lace trim (About 5 ½” long) Hot glue gun and glue sticks Thread to match fabric Sewing machine Iron and ironing surface Freezer paper 2 ½ inch high plain glass votive (that will accommodate the tea light candle Flameless LED tea light candle Wire cutters or diagonals

Step 1 – Attach Pattern to Fabric Place the freezer paper shiny side down on top of the pattern and trace the pattern. Use paper scissors and cut the freezer paper pattern out. This pattern piece may be use many times over again. Fold the fabric strip in half lengthwise and place on an ironing surface. Line the straight edge of the pattern up with the folded edge of the fabric and use a dry, hot iron to press the freezer paper pattern to the fabric. Step 2 – Cutting out the Petal (Repeat these steps to make five petals total) Lay the fabric onto the cutting mat and use the decorative cutter, cut the shape out by running the cutter just along the side of the pattern. Use scissors to cut the lower edge of the pattern. For the three shorter petals cut about 1 ¼” off above the bottom straight edge. Step 3 – Stitching the casing Remove the freezer paper from the fabric and take the petal to the sewing machine. Use a short stitch to stitch about 1/8 inch in from the folded edge. Start in about ½ inch down from one end and stitch a couple locking stitches then sew back to the end, then back along the entire fold to the opposite end and back about ½ inch again and lock stitch. Clip all threads. Step 4 – Wiring the Petal Open the petal out. Starting at either end, carefully insert the wire into the casing to the end then use the wire cutters to cut the wire so that is not sticking past the fabric at either end. Repeat the above instructions making a total of five petals – two long and three short. Step 5 – Attaching the Petals Heat up the hot glue gun. I will be attaching the petals with the casing away from the candle but they could be placed with the casing up which would give the petals a more leaf-like appearance. Attach one of the long petals to the flameless candle by lining the bottom of the petal to the lower edge of the candle and glue along the side of the candle. Next add the remaining long petal next to the first petal. Now add one of the shorter petals in the center directly across from the two long petals. Next attach the two remaining short petals into the gaps on either side of the first short petal.

Step 6 – Setting the Iris into the Votive Slip the flower into the votive. If it doesn’t go all the way to the bottom add lace. Notice how much space there is between the bottom of the petals/candle and the inside bottom of the votive. Remove the flower/candle from the votive. Add the lace by gluing it to the lower edge of the petals and wrapping it around the candle so that it hangs past the bottom of the candle. Glue the lace edges and let cool. Step 7 – Arranging and Finishing Slip the candle into the glass and arrange and shape the petals. Once the petals are shaped they will hold their shape and it is easy to take the candle out for turning on, then simply place it back in the glass and rearrange the petals.
