Jewellery Travel Pouch - Tutorial and Pattern

I followed the link on Pinterest and found that the inspiration came from a gift given to one lady’s mother. I could not find a pattern anywhere. I thought it looked pretty cool and had to try to work it out. Turns out it is not too hard.

Sewing Tools You Need • Sewing machine • all purpose foot • 14/90 needle for thick sewing.

Fabric and Other Supplies • • • • • • • • • • •

For the outer cover 13” x 18” feature fabric. Interfacing 14” x 6 1/2” Wadding 13” x 6 1/2” For the pouches 1/4 metre. WOF is easier than a fat quarter but you could sew the strip together at each end I suppose. Make sure you add another 1” for the second seam. Fusible webbing 20 “ x 3 1/2” All purpose threads to match the outer cover and the inside pouch fabric. Straight pins Tape measure Rotary cutter and cutting mat are useful Iron and ironing board All seam allowances are 1/2 inch

Getting Started 1. For the outer cover cut one rectangle from feature fabric 13” x 14” and one rectangle 13” x 4 “ for the strap.

2. Fold the large rectangle in half so it is 14” long and iron a crease. 3. Apply the iron on interfacing to one side up to the fold.

4. Pin the wadding on the same side aligning it up to the fold.

5. Turn in one end along the 1/2 inch seam allowance.

6. Fold the rectangle right sides together along the centre fold line and sew down the long side and across the end not folded in. I trimmed the raw edges and sewed with the wadding up. It just goes through the machine better for me this way. Use a 1/2” seam. It is possible to sew the strap into the short end seam but I put the strap in the open end after I turned the tube right side out. See later steps.

Clip the corners and turn making sure you smooth the wadding out inside the tube. Give it a good press.

7. Prepare the strap. I didn’t use interfacing. Press in a 1/2” on one short end. Fold in half, press the raw edges to the centre then fold in half again to enclose the raw edges.

8. Edge stitch down the open side, across the neat end and up the other side. Centre the raw edge end of the strap in the open end of the cover and pin in place. Edge stitch all around the cover catching the strap and making sure the open end edges meet so the end is stitched closed properly.

9. Take the pouch strip and fold it in half lengthwise to make a long skinny rectangle. Iron the fold to crease it.

10. Take the 20” piece of fusible webbing and lay it on one side of the fold butting up to the fold and 1/2” in from each end. Iron it on. Let it cool and peel off the backing paper.

11. Sew the ends of the rectangle together with a 1/2 inch seam and finger press the seam open. You don’t want sticky webbing on your iron.

12. Fold the ring in half and carefully fuse it together along its length.

13. Arrange it so the seam is at one end but don’t crease it.

14. Your double layer ring should measure 20”. If not just divide what you have into 4 sections. I measured 5” from one end and poked in a pin. The fused webbing makes it hard to get the pins right in.. hen measure 5” from the that pin and poke in another pin. One more 5” section and poke in a pin. 3 pins.

15. At the machine carefully sew from the fold at the pin mark down to the raw edge. 3 stitching lines. Now at the ironing board separate the pieces between the stitching lines and press the folds formed.

16. Fold the outer cover 5” from the end with out the strap. Open out the fold and line ip the raw edges of the pouches with this fold.

17. Fold it back over to enclose the pouches and secure.

18. Using a 14/90 needle and turning the wheel by hand all the way along stitch 1/2” from the fold to secure the pouches and enclose the raw edges. You need to carefully backstitch at each end to secure the stitching.

19. Find the centre of the pouch and the centre of the cover and pin them together. See the picture. Place pins 3/4” on each side of the centre pin. Sew close to the edge of the pouch from pin to pin to secure it to the cover. Do this for each end pouch.

20. Finish the strap by sewing on a 1” piece of velcro hooks 1/2” from the end of the strap on the inside.

21. I trimmed the edges off the loops just a fraction so it would show then sewed it around all four edges onto the outside of the strap just below where it meets the cover.

22. The strap should wrap around and stick even when the pouches are full.

23. You can fit several pieces of jewellery in for traveling. I keep mine on my bedside table to pop in the things I take off and don’t feel like putting in the box I keep in the wardrobe. I like the way it closes up so if it falls of the table the earrings won’t end up on the floor. I lost a favourite cat earring this way. I think I must have vacuumed it up.

24. I was really happy with the fused pouch strip. It gave a nice crisp fold at the top edge and didn’t add any thickness along the raw edge. The red one has interfacing and the pouches weren’t quite deep enough. The second one I made for the tutorial is an improvement I think. Enjoy.
