JONES FIRE UPDATE NORTHWEST INCIDENT MANAGEMENT TEAM 12 Tom Cable, Incident Commander September 4, 2017 Yesterday’s operations: Yesterday, thick smoke limited fire behavior until mid-afternoon when it cleared and the fire became much more active. On the fire’s southern and eastern flanks burning trees fell across the fireline in two places and ignited twenty spot fires, some of which spread quickly. Crews responded by using a bull dozer to create an indirect containment line to corral the spots. Elsewhere, firefighters made good progress burning out remaining dry fuels between the main fire and the 18 road. Large portions of the fire were in mop-up and patrol status.

Today’s operations: The first order of business today will be controlling the spot fires burning outside the containment lines on the fire’s eastern and southern flanks. “Our priority is to get these spots tied up and secured before the weather changes this afternoon,” said Jeff Bouschor, operations section chief trainee for NW Incident Management Team 12. “The fire woke up yesterday afternoon. Let that remind us that although parts of this fire are quiet we still have a fire to fight,” noted Bouschor. Red Flag Warning through Tuesday—prepare for hot, dry unstable conditions. Expect east winds to push smoke out of the fire area this afternoon. While improving air quality, the winds could increase fire growth. Today, individuals with property to be recovered inside the area closure on forest road 18 will be escorted at their request. To enter the fire closure area, please meet security at the forest road 18 road block between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. today.
