JONES FIRE UPDATE NORTHWEST INCIDENT MANAGEMENT TEAM 12 Tom Cable, Incident Commander September 5, 2017 Yesterday’s operations: It was another busy day for operations as crews continued chasing spot fires. Crews were challenged overnight when a burning snag started a quarter-acre spot fire just outside a containment line in the southeast portion of the fire. Crews picked their way safely to the site & their strong work resulted in that section of the fire being re-secured by the end of shift. Crews also scouted the edges of the fire looking for contingency lines and making plans for alternative contingency lines should the need arise. Although the fire continued to behave as predicted much effort was expended on alternate strategies that were put in place should the fire change behavior. A hot shot crew that was brought in to tighten up specific containment lines and address spot fires was able to accomplish their mission and get ready for their next fire.
Today’s operations: The inversion will continue to be inhibit fire behavior (smoke cap). This is the eighth day in a row setting records for high fire danger. The crews will continue to focus their efforts on "an area of the fire where multiple canyons meeting like streams forming wind eddies that throw fire brands up in the air", challenging the containment line. Other activities will include working on a huge snag that continues to throw embers into the air near the fire containment line. Other efforts include continuing to improve containment lines and check for spot fires outside the perimeter.
