Special/Work Session
June 19, 2017
The Harnett County Board of Education met in open session in the Board Room of the Lillington Education Complex on June 19, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. The following members were present: Bill Morris, Chairman; Eddie Jaggers, Vice-Chairman; Vivian Bennett, Roger Farina and Jason Lemons. Others present: Aaron Fleming, Superintendent; Charles Bullock, Board Attorney; Brookie Ferguson, Vera Jones, Brooks Matthews and Monica Thompson, Assistant Superintendents; Tammy Magill, Chief Financial Officer; Chris Mace, Grades 6 – 12 Director; Terry Byrd, Recording Secretary, and Patricia Harmon-Lewis. Chairman Morris called the meeting to order and he called upon Mrs. Bennett to offer the invocation. Mr. Farina led in the Pledge of Allegiance. Closed Session On a motion by Chairman Morris, seconded by Vice-Chairman Jaggers, the Board voted 4 Ayes and 1 Abstain to convene into closed session for the purpose of personnel matters and to preserve attorney-client privilege in accordance with GS 143-318.11. Mr. Lemons abstained. Return to Open Session On a motion by Mr. Lemons, seconded by Vice-Chairman Jaggers, the Board voted unanimously to return to open session. Approval of Agenda On a motion by Vice-Chairman Jaggers, seconded by Mr. Lemons, the Board voted unanimously to approve the agenda. Consent Agenda Interim Superintendent Fleming presented, with recommendation for approval, the Consent Agenda. 1. Field Trips Harnett Central High Sara Williamson requested permission to take 4 students to a yearbook conference at Hilton Charlotte University Place in Charlotte. Date of the trip is August 3 – 6, 2017 (Thursday thru Sunday). No school days will be missed. Triton High Melissa Tyndall requested permission to take 16 students to a cheer camp at UNC Chapel. Date of the trip is July 14 – 16, 2017 (Friday thru Sunday). No schools days will be missed. 2. Summer Athletic Camps Highland Middle Basketball (July 10–14, 2017), Cheerleading (July 10–14, 2017), Soccer (July 17–20, 2017), Volleyball (July 17–20, 2017), and Football (August 14–17, 2017)
Overhills High Football Camp – June 26 – 29, 2017 JV and Varsity Cheerleading – August 8 – 10, 2017 On a motion by Vice-Chairman Jaggers, seconded by Mr. Lemons, the Board voted unanimously to approve the Consent Agenda. Personnel Action Mr. Farina made a motion to offer a superintendent contract to Aaron Fleming based on previously negotiated procedures. Vice-Chairman Jaggers seconded and the Board voted 3 to 2 to offer Mr. Fleming a superintendent’s contract. Aye: Chairman Morris, Vice-Chairman Jaggers and Mr. Fleming. Nay: Mrs. Bennett and Mr. Lemons At Ease On a motion by Chairman Morris, seconded by Mr. Lemons, the Board voted unanimously to be at ease. Adjourn On a motion by Vice-Chairman Jaggers, seconded by Mrs. Bennett, the Board voted unanimously to adjourn. Respectfully submitted,
