Scurvy Scurvy is a disease caused by not eating enough foods that have Vitamin C in them. We need Vitamin C for our bodies to work properly. In the past, this affected sailors (and pirates!), but also people who lived in towns and villages, just like most of us do today. What happens to our bodies if we have scurvy? Anti-Scurvy Recipes Here are two recipes for adults and children to make together that contain more than enough Vitamin C to stop you getting scurvy.

Sausage and Potato Casserole 1. 2. 3.

Ingredients (serves 2 adults & 2 children) • • • • • • • •

6 sausages 500g baby pearl potatoes 1 red pepper 1 green pepper 1 tin chopped tomatoes 1 large red onion 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar 1 ½ tablespoons olive oil

Rinse all the fruit apart from the kiwifruit and nectarine/peach. Peel the kiwifruit and nectarine/peach. Chop all of the fruit that you’ve washed and/or peeled and place in a big serving bowl. If serving straight away then mix everything together in the serving bowl. If not, add roughly 1tsp lemon juice to the serving bowl, mix, cover the bowl with cling-film and put in the fridge until ready to eat. Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra treat!

Pre-heat oven to 180°C Rinse potatoes with cold water then boil for 15 minutes Place sausages in casserole dish with ½ teaspoon oil for this 15 minutes as well, while you prepare the other ingredients Chop the red and green peppers, and the onion. Mix the balsamic vinegar and olive oil together. Drain the potatoes. Take the casserole dish out of the oven, add in all of the other ingredients and mix them together. Return the casserole dish to the oven for another 20 minutes until cooked.
