A Message from the Headteacher

Who’s new at Kingsway?

Welcome to our first newsletter of this academic year. As usual, it is jam packed with news about our incredible students and the opportunities they have enjoyed this term. As you are aware “opportunity” is one of the three cornerstones of The Kingsway School and I am passionate about ensuring that our school is a place of hard work, fun, optimism and opportunity. Back in May 2017, just 24 hours after the terrorist attack at Manchester Arena, North West poet Tony Walsh performed his “This is the Place” poem at a vigil held in front of Manchester Town Hall. It was a very powerful poem and many of the words can be translated to what we do here at Kingsway. In this addition of our newsletter, you will read: • “We make brilliant music” because “it’s the best and the songs that we sing” in our Year 7 showcase. • “The place with appliance of science” where our Key Stage 3 students learnt the science of medicine and CPR. • “Where go-getters and goal setters know they’ve a chance” with our outstanding careers advice. • “In the face of a challenge we always stand tall” with the achievements of our resource base students. • “We support (Kingsway) dreamers to work for their dreams” with the update from Ms Clarke on how we are helping our Year 11 students to prepare for the GCSEs ahead. And whilst our school is a place of fun and hard work for students, it is also the place where we as staff choose to work, because our moral purpose is to help our young people to become the good citizens that our society needs. This is encapsulated in the final verse of the poem:

Because this is the place in our hearts, in our homes Because this is the place that’s a part of our bones ‘Cos (Kingsway) gives us such strength from the fact That this is the place. We should give something back.

Merry Christmas to all our families.

Mrs Lowe

From left, Miss H. Dobson and Miss A. Williams Miss A. Williams: I am pleased to introduce myself as Kingsway’s new Pastoral Director with responsibility for Attendance, Behaviour and Safeguarding. I have held responsibility in these areas for many years at other schools and feel privileged to join a team of passionate and committed members of staff, who take pride in ensuring that your child feels safe and happy at school so they can learn well and achieve their potential. Your child’s welfare is of paramount importance to me, as is their regular school attendance. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have concerns regarding your son or daughter. I passionately believe our students deserve to be well educated, listened to, valued and supported, in order to help turn them in to our leaders of the future. I have had a really warm welcome by staff, students and their families and look forward to meeting you during the course of your child’s academic journey with us. Miss H. Dobson: I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the Assistant Pastoral Director at the Kingsway School with responsibility for Behaviour. Firstly, I would like to thank students, parents and carers for the warm welcome I have been given. I know that working in partnership is key to improving the behaviour of individual students at the school. As we approach the end of the first term, I will be writing to you to draw your attention to a few changes that have been made to have a consistent approach to managing behaviour at our school. On arrival, I was impressed with the exemplary behaviour of Kingsway students, most of whom are polite, well-mannered and kind students. My job is to help those students who find managing their behaviour difficult, make more positive choices. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any queries about behaviour at Kingsway.

Kickstart to Kingsway

– L. Dunn

On 7th and 8th September, our new Year 7s were thrust in to Kingsway life with a series of team building exercises and an enterprise event. Students worked together in teams to design an app – accumulating money for creativity, leadership and teamwork. A team from Commando Joe lead the Year 7s through a number of gruelling physical activities that tested their skill, patience and resilience. All students threw themselves in and really made the most of this exciting opportunity. What a great way to kickstart their Kingsway experience!

GCSE Presentation Evening

– K. Guess

Over 400 students and their families packed Foxland Hall for the annual Presentation Evening. Everyone was present to celebrate the success of the class of 2017 and see them receive their GCSE certificates. In addition to this, the all of the Departments had nominated a student to receive an award for effort and attainment at Key Stage 4. This year’s guest speaker was Stacey Copeland. She has previously been the guest speaker for the Sports Presentation Evening and was such a hit with the audience that we were delighted to invite her back. Stacey has represented her country at both Football and Boxing. She has now turned professional as a boxer but her main aim in life is to inspire others through her achievements in sport. She is particularly keen to get more girls taking part in sports. The Kingsway School wishes the class of 2017 the very best for the future.

Charities

– K. Guess

This year we will be supporting our main school charity, which is the Kolweny Kingsway School in Kenya. In addition to this, all of the Houses have adopted their own charity this year: Gaskell: Manchester Children’s Hospital Lowry: MIND Turing: Pippa McManus Foundation Rylands: KIDSCAN Whitworth: ABC Charity - Anorexia Bulimia Care Pankhurst: The Teenage Cancer Trust The major fundraising event for this school year is the sponsored walk which will take place at Easter.

Literacy Week

– J. Heil

Here at Kingsway, we believe that there are some skills which are absolutely vital in ensuring every student can enjoy success at school and beyond. Once a year, for the last four years, we have run an increasingly successful literacy intervention programme for selected groups of year 7 students. This year the programme is back, bigger and better than ever before. Developing a strong literacy base is essential to students being able to access the curriculum across the school. The intervention programme is one of a growing number of ways in which we provide additional support for our students, ensuring they have the best possible educational opportunities. The programme is carefully tailored to the needs of the students taking part and a fantastic range of resources are employed to keep students engaged. The initial, week-long intervention is exciting and intensive and students are given the opportunity to improve their reading, writing, and oral literacy skills, as well as building confidence and resilience. Students took part in a variety of reading, writing, physical activities and games, which helped solidify understanding and use of basic grammar, punctuation and spelling, as well as inspiring the imaginations of our students, helping them access English in a fun and alternative way. Following the success of their involvement last year, students also had the opportunity to take part in creative literacy workshops run by As Creative, a creative education company based in Liverpool. They played a variety of games and were presented with a complex mystery to solve using their inference and deduction skills; by the end of the day we had a roomful of Sherlock Holmes! They also had to fathom out ‘Who sank the ship?’ in Shakespeare’s Tempest and created some brilliant Cinquain poetry from their findings. The week saw all those who participated making fantastic progress and was enjoyed massively by all involved, including the staff! We celebrated the students’ efforts and successes at the end of the week by inviting parents to come in and enjoy a bite to eat whilst perusing the week’s work. The students were presented with certificates and a brand new book to take home, as well as some other goodies to

reward their hard work and contributions to the week. Feedback from the week has been overwhelmingly positive from students, staff and parents alike and we hope to continue running equally successful programmes in the future. A huge thank you to everyone involved for making it another brilliant week.

This year, the programme doesn’t end here: we’re thrilled that the 2017/18 academic year sees the continued success of this programme growing into something new. In addition to the initial literacy week, there will be follow up weeks in both the spring and summer terms, with this year’s students being the first to enjoy an extended programme of events.

World War I Play

– H. Parkin

In November, the Quantum Theatre brought their production ‘Your Country Needs You’, about World War I, to The Kingsway School. The play explores the politics behind the outbreak of the war through to the Battle of the Somme, using sketches and vignettes to follow the fate of a ‘Pals’ Battalion leaving England’s shores for the fields of Northern France. Using original source materials and Interweaving songs, sketches, poetry and prose from the time the play examines the effects of war on those directly involved at home and at the front. Two brilliant actors took on the roles of Austro-Hungarian Franz Ferdinand, the German Kaiser and our very own Lord Kitchener along with many other characters including soldiers, wives, mothers and even footballers! The year 9 pupils were enthralled by the performance and some were even recruited into the army and marched along the stage with the actors.

Transition News

– L. Dunn

Grease Musical experience at Prospect Vale. ‘Grease is the word!’ Prospect Vale Year 6 students enjoyed a mini-project around our up-and-coming musical Grease. Students created 1950’s style screen print posters with Kingsway Art Teacher Mrs Dunn and enjoyed a very musical day learning ‘We Go Together’ with our Music Teacher Mr Lawton. The students also learned an accompanying dance routine with our Transition Dance teacher Laura Kendall and performed both routines to the rest of the Prospect Vale students and parents at the end of the day. A fantastic, creative and energetic day was had by all!

– P. Parry

The Resource Centre now has a separate Teaching Room to provide a quiet dedicated space for our students when lessons are required outside the mainstream classrooms. We have a new logo to represent this new stage in our development. The bird traditionally symbolises freedom and the future; the wings of possibilities, vision and individuality. Following on from their incredible achievements attaining their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award, our Year 11s will embark on new challenges to gain their Silver Award. The Award requires six months of hard work encompassing Volunteering, Skills, Physical and an Expedition.

Primary Transition Workshops Year 4,5 and 6 students from our feeder primaries have been enjoying a taste of Kingsway life through a series of workshops delivered by our resident expert teachers. From art workshops to ICT and RE, students have thoroughly enjoyed visiting us and finding their way around The Kingsway School.

Message Trust Higher Tour

The Resource Centre

– N. Williams

On Wednesday 8th November, we were one of more than 20 other local schools who participated in the Message Trust’s Higher Tour. This involved a Christian punk band called Amongst the Wolves coming in and playing to some of our students in assembly time and during their RE lessons. They led students in discussions about their beliefs regarding the character of God and their own identity and value. While it was a bit of a shock to some of our year 10 students’ ears at 8:30am, they were certainly awake for their first lesson!

To complete their volunteering section, students are undertaking a variety of ventures. These include working at the Shaw Trust Charity shop in Handforth and the Chelwood Foodbank in Cheadle. Students will also be helping dementia patients and the Neonatal Unit at Wythenshawe Hospital by knitting items for them. In between all this, they have made decorations for the Oxfam shop in Sale.

As usual, we have a host of sporting events and trips in the pipeline which are invaluable for developing physical and social skills. Throughout November and December, some students will visit The Donkey Sanctuary in Manchester to learn about caring for the animals with hands-on experience. Students will continue to maintain and extend the Sensory Garden, which has been nurtured over the past 2 years. Take a look on the Kingsway School website and see what we have achieved and our aims for the Resource Centre, or look out for our updates on Facebook and Twitter: @kw_resourcectr

Careers & Post-16 News

– S. Flood

The Careers Zone We have a fantastic new resource in school which is accessible to all students. The Careers Zone is open three days a week and staff are on hand for careers and post-16 advice. We also have a dedicated working area where students can complete research and applications on line as well as complete other work. We have an abundance of information available, which includes college information and application forms as well as Apprenticeship information.

Year 9 – Barclays ‘Girls Allowed’ IT Event In October, for the third year running, we were invited to take a small group of Year 9 students to Barclays, Radbroke Hall, to participate in a ‘Girls Allowed’ IT Event. This event was developed by Barclays as they identified a significant reduction in girls applying for IT-related careers with them. Eight Year 9 students were invited on this event and enjoyed numerous workshops in Cryptography, Robot Programming and IT Design. A young Barclays Apprentice also gave a presentation on her journey with the bank from the age of 16 , to the present day – studying for a degree courtesy of Barclays.

The Careers Zone has been utilised fully over the last couple of months by students coming in for help with their College applications and Personal Statements.

This opportunity highlighted some career options to our students that they perhaps hadn’t thought of before. It is worth remembering that not all students follow the college route directly after school.

This resource is available to any student who may have questions about what happens after school!

Year 9 – Careers ‘Speed Dating’ Event The Kingsway School proudly hosted their fourth ‘Speed Dating’ Careers Evening on the 9th November. The objective of this event was to assist our Year 9 students in choosing the subjects they wish to study at GCSE. Over 30 employers volunteered to help us with this exciting event. They talked to students and parents about future opportunities post-16. Our employers all got into the spirit of the night and wore red carnations in line with the ‘Speed Dating’ theme. We had a great turnout of students and their families at this event. The presentations were short but comprehensive and provided students with valuable advice for that area of work. Later, the students were invited to go back to the areas of work that particularly interested them to ask further questions. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive from students, parents and the employers. There was a real ‘buzz’ to the proceedings and some parents offered their services to be involved in future career events! A huge thank you to the employers who gave up their time in order to help our Year 9 students with their forthcoming GCSE decisions.

Years 10 and 11 – Work Experience in the Summer Holidays Although Work Experience is no longer part of the curriculum, we still actively encourage our students Year 10 and above to try to secure working experience. This is a fantastic addition to any CV or application form. Students are advised that any work experience they secure must be completed in their leisure time. The Kingsway School do try to support our students in securing a placement by offering suggestions and advice. The summer holidays saw a number of our Year 10 students secure placements with Kids Allowed Nursery. All feedback received from Kids Allowed was very positive about our students and how they performed on the week. We also spent some time working with a local toy company who wanted to offer an opportunity for one student to secure work experience with them. A comprehensive week long programme was produced enabling the lucky student to be able to gain experience working in Design, Accounts, Sales, Export, Import and Quality Control, to name but a few. Students were invited to apply for this opportunity and our current Year 11 student, Harvey Stanyer was successful and completed his week in August. This was the first time this company had offered any student an opportunity to do this and following on from Harvey’s successful week with them, they are happy to offer it again for future years! We are very grateful to all the companies who offer our students these opportunities.

Year 10 – Post-16 Evening The Kingsway School hosted its Annual Year 10 Post-16 Evening last June. All the Colleges, Employers, Training Agencies with whom we work were happy to attend and assist our students and their parents with the difficult decisions that they shortly needed to make. This evening was really well attended by students with their parents and we hope it gave some clarity on the next steps and viable options.

Year 10 – Loreto College ‘Greater Manchester High Achievers Programme’ For the seventh year running, The Kingsway School were delighted to be asked to take part in this programme with Loreto College. The ‘High Achievers Group’ is a two-year journey for Year 10 students who have been identified as working at the high levels that are requested by Loreto. Places on this programme are very limited as the college work with other schools, so we are restricted in the numbers that we can invite. The Launch Evening at Loreto was on the 4th October and parents had a presentation, which explained the whole process and the benefit of being involved. As Loreto College is also a popular choice for Kingsway students to continue their education, this was also their first introduction to the college. Students who attended will be invited to the events as they are scheduled. The last GMHAP visit our for our current Year 11 students was on Tuesday 28th November. Students were invited to select a Masterclass of their choice in order to aid their understanding of the subject and hopefully assist them in securing excellent grades in their GCSE’s. Once again we met with other schools from across the North West and students enjoyed an opportunity to develop their knowledge in key subjects as well as interact with students from other schools.

Our Careers Zone is available to students for any information they may require and in addition, we have a comprehensive programme of careers-related activities, unique to our school, which span the next 18 months of the students’ school career. In order to understand and support your child through this process please refer to page 124 in the student planner as this gives the time frame for these events/activities.

Year 11 – College Presentations Year 11 students have had a really busy start to this year. For the first six weeks of term, they have had local and Manchester colleges coming in to present information about their college and what opportunities would be on offer to them should they continue their studies with them. We have enjoyed presentations from Xaverian, Manchester, Loreto, Aquinas, Cheadle and Stockport Colleges. Year 11 students are actively applying for colleges as we speak and working hard on both their Application forms and Personal Statements. All Year 11 students should have submitted their forms by Christmas at the latest.

Year 11 – Greater Manchester Aim Higher Programme In the coming weeks we will be working with Greater Manchester Aim Higher to help our students learn about the opportunities available after they finish Year 11. These can include university visits, speakers, involvement with local business, and mentoring programmes, to name just a few. Part of this process includes GMAHP asking students for their name and postcodes so they can track the effectiveness of the programme.

Year 10 Careers Inductions Year 10 students have all received Careers Inductions, which explain their options post-school and all the aspects that they should now begin to research in order to make these forthcoming decisions easier. Students are required to stay in education until they are 18 years of age so their options post-school are predominantly: college, school sixth form, or an apprenticeship.

Year 9 Options

– R. Knott

During next half term, Year 9 students will be selecting their GCSE courses. The requirements at Key stage 4 have changed considerably in recent years with many schools narrowing their curriculum choices, and removing some subjects. We have maintained a broad curriculum, which we believe provides students with the best foundation for the next stage in their careers. However, the days of a completely free choice have gone. Students will need to select four subjects to study in addition to the core curriculum. Of these four subjects the majority of students will have to study a Modern Foreign Language, and either History or Geography. This will leave a further two subjects for the students to choose. The Options Evening on 25th January will enable you to learn more about the choices available and the Year 9 Parents’ Evening on 12th February will provide another opportunity to discuss choices. The deadline for decisions is 26th February.

Year 7 Showcase

– P. Lawton

On Monday 20th (THEKIN) and Tuesday 21st (GSWAYC) November, our Year 7 students took part in the Music Department’s annual ‘Year 7 Showcase’. Once again, this featured each form performing two songs, which they had worked on in music lessons during the first half-term, followed by a massed performance featuring all of the forms who performed that evening. Both nights were extremely well attended, and the support from families and staff was overwhelming. The students sang with confidence and passion, despite it being the very first time some students had performed in public at all. Featuring a wide variety of songs, both old and new, the evening was a resounding success, and the feedback has been extremely positive. The Music Department would like to thank all of the year 7 students who contributed to the performances each evening for their dedication and enthusiasm. We look forward to further performance opportunities in the future.

Leading Parent Partnership Award

– J. Maxey

We have been working hard to complete the Leading Parent Partnership Award, which we hope to achieve before Christmas. LPPA is a nationally accredited award which looks at the ways in which schools engage with parents. Most recently we have been reflecting on the information we share with parents, our communication systems and how we support students with transition from primary school. If you would like to give us any further feedback, do feel free to get in touch with Jane Maxey: [email protected] Thank you for your support.

Year 11 Term One: “Back with a Bang”

– K. Clarke

This term has been huge for our Year 11 students. When they returned from their summer break, they immediately began a programme of support regarding college applications. Various, leading colleges came into school to deliver information sessions to the students and all Year 11 students were advised to write a personal statement to accompany their college application. The statement is designed as a mode for them to showcase themselves and their many talents. This term, our Year 11 students have also begun their careers interview. This is ongoing and allows students to sit down 1-1 with a specialist to discuss their potential route post-16. All students who have so far had this session, have expressed how useful it has been. If you son/daughter has not had their session yet, it is important that they have the date/time/venue written in their planner so they don’t miss their slot. One of the highlights of term one was when we booked Elevate, a revision company to come into school and give key revision advice to our year group. Alex, a 19 year old student of Manchester University stood at the front of Foxland Hall for one hour and imparted his knowledge. Feedback from students was immense; they loved his no nonsense advice. Some of which was: • Use trigger words when designing flashcards/notes. • Use colour in these trigger words, the brain loves to see colour. • Create your revision notes and then test yourself with a quiz. • Work together and test each other, design a multiple choice quiz for a mate to complete (remember you must know the answers though!). • Re-test yourself or a mate 24 hours after your initial revision. • If you are aiming for a grade 9, do some additional research; show the examiner that you know more than all other students.

Students in term one have also been told clearly that their attitude in lessons really is the most important thing. Attending revision sessions is magic, but actually following teacher advice in lessons is key to success. This also means completion of homework. If your son/daughter issues the magic phrase “I haven’t got any homework” challenge them. All students in Year 11 should be doing at least one hour’s worth of revision a night (this is in addition to their homework). They may want to give themselves a break during the Christmas holiday, and that is fine. But, all should be doing at least one hour (perhaps broken down into two 30 minute sessions) of revision from now until the real GCSEs are sat in June. This may mean doing 30 minutes of My Maths, or 30 minutes creating 2 flashcards for French, or 30 minutes revising An Inspector Calls quotes. If your son/daughter is struggling with revision,(e.g. does nothing and does not know where to start) please contact me at and I will support you and them in creating a workable programme. This is a very important year and students in Year 11 are feeling the pressure. Attending every lesson, where possible, displaying an excellent attitude to learning, asking for help when stuck and beginning revision will allow all your son/daughter to maximise their chances in June 2018. Please continue to support our work in school by supporting your son/ daughter in their college/ apprenticeship application. Please also take the time to ask them how their mocks (now called PPEs) have gone and regularly ask them what they are revising and how they are doing it. If you need any support, please contact myself (Karen Clarke) at: [email protected] The Year 11 team wishes all students and their families a restful and relaxing holiday break.

The Kingsway Learner & Enrichment – J. Maxey

Prom 2018

As a school, we are committed to raising the aspirations of all students. With the increasing demands of GCSEs and the requirement from colleges and businesses that students ‘go beyond the classroom’, we are placing further emphasis on students developing resilience, independent learning ambition and life-enhancing skills. In line with this, we are continuing to focus on four main attributes:

Last June, our ex-Year 11 students celebrated in style at their Prom. It was held in the Ballroom at Stockport Town Hall. The students looked amazing and their behaviour was exemplary.

Resourcefulness: Think through alternatives; find new approaches. Resilience: Not to give up when things get difficult; overcome adversity. Reciprocity: To work well as a team, but know how to be independent.

The Kingsway School Presents:

Prom 2018 Criteria featuring:

During this term, a choice of posters (shown below), detailing the criteria required, for the ‘The Kingsway Certificate’ have been shared with students. Each form voted on its favourite poster for its classroom and students have now been challenged to gain this Certificate.

Reflectiveness: Act on advice; learn from what goes well and what doesn’t. As part of this work, ‘The Kingsway Certificate’ recognises and rewards those learners with these attributes.

This year’s senior students have already started to plan the 2018 Prom. They have decided to move the venue to Mere Golf and Country Club and we have managed to negotiate a much better package for the event and an amazing menu that should have something for everyone. Due to the fact that the venue is further away, we have already started to investigate coaches to transport the students. The 2018 Prom will be on Friday 22nd June and is by invitation only. In order to be invited, the students must achieve the Prom criteria shown, left.

CPR Week & Restart A Heart Day – N. Hammersley During the week commencing 9th October, The Kingsway School held a CPR - Call, Push, Rescue - Week, which culminated with a Restart A Heart Day, in association with the North West Ambulance Service, The NHS and The British Heart Foundation. Throughout the day, students received training and hands-on practice, using manikins donated to the school by The British Heart Foundation, before taking a final examination which lead to certification. Over 120 students from Key Stage 3 gained certificates in CPR, enabling them to restart a heart. The criteria required has been made more challenging this year, to reflect the increasingly high standards that we expect from our students. As well as increasing the currency of each criteria, an additional requirement has also been added: ‘10+ hours of Enrichment completed and recorded’. Enrichment can take place both in school and out of school and can take many guises including DofE, charity work, sporting activity, student leadership, club membership or simply ‘taking part’ in something additional. We are currently in the process of undertaking a school wide audit of our Enrichment offer and further details will follow.

10

CPR Week and the Restart A Heart Day is a drive by The Kingsway School to further increase STEM provisions within the school and make students more aware of Health & Safety. Students enjoyed the day immensely and staff commented on the merits of such a worthy cause.
