ANNOUNCEMENTS The following events are to celebrate:

SANCTUARY MONTH STAR Youth Leadership Summit Date: November 16, 2017 Location: Westin Guam Resort & Spa Time: 8:00AM – 4:00PM GCASAFV will be holding their Project Strengthening Teens Awareness and Resources (STAR) Youth Leadership Summit. The purpose of this Summit is to train students from Guam’s high schools on healthy relationships and how to become peer leaders in their schools. The Summit will feature David Lee and Ashleigh Klein-Jimenez from the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault (CALCASA). Pacific Partners Project (PPP) Twice a year, representatives and student leaders who make up the PPP Technical Advisory Group (TAG) convene together for a face-to-face meeting. The next TAG meeting is November 14-16, 2017. Site visits to University of Guam and Guam Community College will take place. David Lee and Ashleigh Klein-Jimenez from CALCASA will conduct training on Comprehensive Prevention, Gender-Based Approach, and Bystander Intervention related to campus sexual misconduct.

Community Advocate Training Date: November 3, 2017 Location: Guam Community College – Multi-Purpose Auditorium Building 400 Time: 8:30AM – 3:00PM GCASAFV, in partnership with the Guam Community College will facilitate a Community Advocate Training that will cover civil and criminal statutes on sexual assault and family violence, dynamics of sexual assault and family violence, the intersection of HIV/AIDS and dating violence, victim rights, and available services.

Conference Attendees kNOw MORE About Abuse In Later Life GCASAFV in collaboration with Department of Public Health and Social Services, Division of Senior Citizens held the kNOw MORE Abuse Across the Lifespan Series I: Abuse in Later Life on October 25 and 26 at the Pacific Star Chamorro Ballroom.

Featured speakers included Bonnie Brandl and Taunuu Ve’e from the National Clearinghouse for Abuse in Later Life (NCALL) and, Sergeant Eugene Charfauros, Detectives Mary Jane Raval and Joel Terlaje from the Guam Police Department – Domestic Assault Response Team (GPD-DART). Panelist speakers included Jocelynn Cruz, DPHSS; Richard Jay Solang, Mayor’s Council of Guam; Jeffery Warfield, Department of Integrated Services for Individuals with Disabilities; Leticia Piper, Guam Legal Services Corporation – Disability Law Center; Jacob Perez, Guam Public Defender Service Corporation; Detective Joseph Aguon, GPD-DART; and Honorable Judge Arthur Barcinas, Superior Court of Guam.

On day 2 of the conference the 34th Legislature of Guam presented a Legislative Resolution recognizing the Training and Advocacy Services Initiative (TASI) Partners in their efforts to raise awareness about abuse in later life. The TASI stakeholders also took part in the Coordinated Community Response (CCR) Kickoff meeting with from NCALL. This meeting covered an overview of the Abuse in Later Life grant awarded by the Office of Violence Against Women to DPHSS, how to have a successful CCR and making change in our community. 2

“1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been victims of [some form of] physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime.” - National Coalition Against Domestic Violence October was Domestic and Family Violence Awareness Month. GCASAFV and its partners devoted this month to raising awareness for domestic and family violence by conducting, participating in, and facilitating events. A Wave With Erica’s House Erica’s House kicked off Family Violence Awareness Month on October 4, 2017 at Chief Kapuha Park in Hagatna with a wave. Erica’s House. GCASAFV participated along with other agencies and organizations.

Silent Witness Ceremony 2017 GCASAFV and the Governor’s Community Outreach – Federal Programs Office held the Silent Witness Ceremony and 2017 Family Violence Awareness Month Proclamation Signing presented by Lt. Governor Ray Tenorio, and the 34th Legislature of Guam presented a Legislative Resolution at the Latte of Freedom on October 5, 2017. The Silent Witness Ceremony was held in remembrance of the men, women, and children who lost their lives to family violence. Thank you to all who attended, participated in, and made this event a success! 3

Family Violence Awareness Outreach GCASAFV held their Family Violence Awareness Outreach at the Agana Shopping Center on October 7, 2017. Members and partners participated in this event to promote the services that their organizations and agencies have to offer. #PurpleThursday GCASAFV participated in #PurpleThursday on October 19, 2017. Those who participated in this national campaign wore purple in solidarity of survivors of domestic violence and family violence, as well as in remembrance of those who have lost their lives to domestic and family violence.

Silent Witness Exhibit GCASAFV participated in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church’s Silent Witness Exhibit on October 21, 2017 at the Guam Premier Outlet’s Food Court. Guam’s service providers including government agencies and non-profit organizations participated.

AAFB Domestic Violence Awareness Info Fair GCASAFV participated in the Domestic Violence Awareness Information Fair at Andersen Air Force Base. Halloween Costume Drive: Thank You For Your Donations!

Thank you to Pacific Daily News for leading the Halloween Costume Drive and to all who donated new/gently-used costumes. This year’s drive garnered 379 Halloween costumes! Catholic Social Service Alee Shelter, Erica’s House, Kamalen Karidat, and residents at GHURA’s Toto Garden’s housing project received the donations.
