Tip Sheet #17

Overview of Kurzweil 3000 (Version 12) Classic Toolbars Kurzweil 3000 is scan-and-read software that allows users to work with two types of documents: image files which are digitized from a scanner or imported from a digital source and word processing files that allow a user to generate their own content. Tools that are not available for use in either image mode or word processing mode will be grayed out in the menus/toolbars.

The Text Menu

The text menu at the top of Kurzweil’s work area allows users to access advanced features of the software. This menu also displays the keyboard shortcuts that are associated with various commands in the program. More common tools are provided in the colored toolbars that appear under the text menu. Click on each text menu to display the full contents (the most helpful contents are discussed briefly below). 1. File – Open, save, and extract documents; create audio files from a current document 2. Edit – Cut, copy, and paste in any type of file; edit the appearance of word processed documents, edit the page order or contents of an image document 3. Scan – Change the scanning mode, correct errors in page scanning, configure scanning options, and enter Zone Editing mode (CTRL + F5) – note that the Scan menu is only available in the Professional version 4. Read – Adjust the reading settings of the software 5. View – Change the appearance of the current page, change the page number of an electronic document to match a print document (use View | Page | Set Number…), and rotate pages in image documents. 6. Write – Access word processing tools to brainstorm, outline, draft, and review writing 7. Tools – Configure the way that Kurzweil tools respond and the way that Kurzweil handles documents (specifically, Tools | Options…) 8. Reference – Change the dictionary settings and look up word definitions by typing them 9. Window – View, hide, or tile multiple documents that are open in Kurzweil 10. Online – Search for content, definitions, and translations using internet-based tools 11. Help – Search for help and access built-in “how to” videos on common features

Useful Tips •

• •

Teach the use of ink highlighters in the order presented by Kurzweil. This will aid users in easily transitioning from paper-based highlighting to the much more powerful highlighting features of Kurzweil 3000. Right-click an empty area of the toolbars to customize toolbar appearances or to apply specialized toolbar sets that are specific to the use of the current document or to the needs of the current user. Right-clicking on a document or icon to quickly access important features.

Work efficiently with scanned documents by working in this order: 1) zone edit, 2) spell check, and 3) edit underlying text (as presented in the Document Preparation toolbar set). If a scanned document features horizontal lines (blanks) that need to be filled by the student, it is often most efficient to scan the document in Black & White mode. This will allow the user to take advantage of Tools | Fill in the Blanks. This will add a text box to each available line, giving the student a place to enter answers onscreen. Orange placeholders will appear for each text box. These may be deleted or ignored (they are not visible to a printer until text is entered into them). Use Tab or Shift + Tab to navigate forward and backward between text boxes.
