On a sad note, one of our newest members sadly passed away April 10, 2014. He managed to have his wish of pin striping his Goldwing and putting Baker wings, went home to rest and passed away quietly. God rest his soul.

By The Book

“By the Book” articles are intended to help familiarize GWRRA Volunteer Leaders and Members with the policies, procedures, and information contained in the GWRRA Officer’s Handbook (OHB). A copy of the Officer’s Handbook can be found at the following Internet website: www.gwrra.org/oconnect/officerhandbook.html Please feel free to reprint these articles in Region, District, or Chapter newsletters.

Officers – Can We Do Too Much? Serving the Members is the primary function of all Officers of GWRRA. Officers have a very important position in our leadership network. They deal directly with, and for, those it was designed to be most beneficial to...the Members. GWRRA is recognized as one of the most successful organizations of its kind. Its Members are among the best and most loyal of any motorcycle organization on record. As such, GWRRA Members deserve our very best efforts as leaders. For these reasons, GWRRA Officers, may not serve in positions with competing or similar motorcycle organizations where real or perceived conflicts may develop. Doing so sends the wrong message to the Member whose motorcycling interests must remain our highest priority. A secondary, but equally serious concern, is the effect of the demands placed on a GWRRA Officer. Multiple positions of responsibility in or outside of GWRRA cannot help but be a detriment to their ability to serve the Members. Good leaders are always in demand and from time to time GWRRA leaders will need to decide where and how they can best serve. On these occasions appointing officials should not use undue influence, but rather do their best to help subordinate officers understand the need to place a high priority on serving GWRRA Members. The above paragraphs were taken directly from the Officer Handbook. But does this mean one can only participate in GWRRA? Of course not. Many often find it hard to say 'no' when asked to serve or help out with other organizations in which they are interested. Always saying 'yes' can result in too much to do or place excessive demands on time or money. What do you do when you are needed in two different places at the same time or when multiple organizations are supporting the same cause? GWRRA Officers must recognize this and prioritize their responsibilities to GWRRA when asked to accept roles in other organizations. So to answer the question – yes, one can wind up doing too much. Care must be exercised to prevent overextending oneself or sending the wrong message to our Members. The more you know, the better it gets!

Jack Wagner - Regional Director

What an April! May is Coming Its spring and the riding/event season has begun big time. April started off with the Region H rally in Marshall, TX which included not only the typical things expected at a rally, but some very special extras. Thursday evening's welcome party at the Josey Ranch was incredible with good food, great entertainment and an atmosphere that seemed to combine a county fair with a family reunion. During the course of the weekend Members got the opportunity to get acquainted with the Directors of GWRRA, Ray and Sandy Garris as well as the International Couple of the Year, Tommy and Gayle Wilson. There was no way new friends couldn't be made as attendees from seven GWRRA Regions were present. Friday evening, downtown Marshall rolled out the red carpet with merchants staying open late just for us and put on a poker walk. A highlight of the evening was the announcement of Jim and Reba Berry as the new Region H Couple of the Year. Talk about creativity – if you missed the Crazy Boots Contest, complete with blingy boots and grass skirts, you really missed out. Friday evening capped off with the light show and parade. Saturday brought an amazing performance by the Kansas Twisters Motorcycle Drill Team. These guys (and gal) put on an incredible show – especially given the drill team was only formed a short nine months ago (and that includes a Kansas winter). I want to thank everyone who attended the Region H rally in Marshall. I hope everyone had a great time. If you had a good time, take a minute to thank those who volunteered in various ways to make it a success. If there are things you would like to see changed or if anything went wrong, please tell me. This is your rally and I want to make it what you want. On the heels of the Region H rally, came the annual Louisiana District Mardi Gras Madness rally – an event never to be missed. The LA District team did an outstanding job! At closing ceremonies the District Director responsibilities were handed over to Red and Brenda Roussel, who I'm confident will carry on the LA tradition of fun. Many thanks to Merlin and Beverly Mayon, Senior District Directors, for their contributions as the prior LA District Directors. Its not over by a long shot. In fact its just beginning. May brings us the Texas 'Band of Wingers' rally in Tyler May 8-10. Then its off to Arkansas for their salute to 'Veterans and Sweethearts' in Harrison May 2224. Before you know it Wing Ding will be here. Once again Region H has responsibility for the bike show on Thursday. Please go to the sign up sheet at www.gwrra-h.org and volunteer to help us out. Until next month,

Sunblock Can Kill You Honest! Trust me! By: James R. Davis Maybe you think that might be a bit of an exaggeration? Nope. Yesterday Elaine and I participated in the third annual Lime Run hosted by the Lone Star Ladies. It turns out that we manned one of the stops on the run which meant that we were in the sun all day long. We used a sunblock on our faces, necks and arms so that we would not get 'over-done'. We had about a 100 mile ride to get home. 12 miles from home I went blind, at 70 MPH! One minute all was right with the world, the next instant both my eyes stung and gushed tears so badly that I was forced to shut them both completely - blinking did not help - I could not see a thing! I slowed down and hit my Push To Talk button: "Elaine, we have to stop - I have something in my eyes!" Mind you that I was wearing a full-face helmet, glasses, and the shield was down on the helmet. It didn't exactly make any sense to me either - how could something get into my eyes like that? Elaine happened to be driving her cage rather than her bike yesterday and was in front of me. Fortunately we had put a handheld CB into her car that very day! She slowed and steered interference for me for about a quarter of a mile. With one of my eyes totally shut and the other blinking rapidly (and painfully), I managed to be able to see enough to guide the bike one lane to the right on the freeway, then mercifully there was an off ramp right in front of us - we took it. Off the freeway we pulled right into a vacant lot off the access road and again I was unable to open either eye. I felt for the kickstand and got it in place just as she jumped out of her car and came back to see what was wrong. Not sure if I was level or not, I wanted both hands to stay on the handlebars and asked her to take my glasses off for me. Tears poured down my face from both eyes - not from the pain, though there was plenty of that, but from whatever was in my eyes. Elaine ran to her car and got a bottle of water and a handful of Kleenex tissues for me. I washed my eyes with the water and then applied the tissues and all was instantly well again! It turns out that some of the sunblock on my nose had vaporized with the heat in my helmet and my dark glasses wrap around my head and touch my face all around my eyes - keeping the vapor in. The message is simple: If you use sunblock on your face be sure to wipe it off before putting your helmet on! (Incidentally, you can buy sports-oriented sunblock products that purport not to sting your eyes.) Sunblock can kill you. Honest.

Reba and Jim Berry Medic First Aid Coordinators 2014 - 15 Region H Couple of the Year May 2014 Reba and I are both honored to have been selected as your 2014 –15 Region H Couple of the Year. We would like to thank and congratulate the other District Couples that participated with us in the selection process. It was great getting to know them as they are all, very special people. They are Arleen and Bobby Webb (AR), Sherri and David McDonald (KS), Debbie and Howard McDaniel (OK) and Donna and Steve Van Gilder (TX). We know we have big shoes to fill as Becky and Tim Dinnel set the bar very high last year. We certainly appreciate all their efforts and look forward to supporting them in the international selection process at Wing Ding this summer in Madison, WI. Purrrrple is the word! Wear it to the selection program to show your support. If we haven’t met, let’s do so at the TX and AR Conventions this month. We always tell folks that GWRRA is a big happy group of family and friends, some you just might not have met yet. One or two may be ornery ole cusses, but most are good, fun loving folks that enjoy and share the common interest of motorcycling. We are looking forward to these next two rallies because we don’t have to work on the hosting teams. We were on both the Region and LA District teams holding Conventions on consecutive weekends in April. This time we WILL get to ride the Goldwing. East Texas and North West Arkansas both offer excellent, contrasting riding experiences. We encourage you to try both. You know your bike wants to!

This bridge was recently featured in Wing World Magazine. Our mission before, during or after the AR convention is to ride across it! Come join us, first in Tyler, then in Harrison. Reba and Jim

Mike & Lorie Judice 2013 Chapter B Couple of the Year 2014—2015 LA District Couple of the Year May 2014

Hello Goldwingers, Greetings everyone from Mike & Lorie Judice, your new 2014-15 LA District Couple of the Year. For those of you that don’t yet know us, let us introduce ourselves. We have been married for 34 years. We have four children, Randy, Lauren, Lindsey, and Ricky. We also have six grandchildren, three boys and three girls. Mike works for the City of Rayne as the Superintendent for the Waste and Water Department. Lorie works at a local hospital in the Medical Records Department as a Chart Analyst and process birth certificates. We have a gold colored 2006 Goldwing. We bought our bike in 2011 and joined Chapter LA- B in 2012. We would like to thank Amy and Allen Strain for all their help in preparing us for the District COY competition. It is very much appreciated. We would also like to thank Chapter LA- B for all their encouragement and support. We would like to congratulate Jim and Reba Berry on their selection as Region H COY, and good luck to Tim and Becky Dinnel as they compete for International COY. Louisiana is well represented with both couples. You are all a very hard act to follow. The District Convention was another big success. Thursday night started the convention with opening ceremonies with the District Staff entertaining us as Duck Dynasty. Then Chapter LA-B educated us on the history of Mardi Gras, and then the bike light show (beautiful bikes in the dark). Then everyone enjoyed the live music from a local Cajun band. Friday and Saturday there were plenty of seminars to attend. There were rides that Chapter LA- B provided as riders were led on a Boudin Run, a ride to St. Martinsville and to Avery Island. Friday was also Couple of the Year selection, starting with breakfast honoring all the Louisiana Chapter Couples. Participants enjoyed a dance class, bingo and Friday night was our Mardi Gras Costume contest with live music. There were Vendors Friday and Saturday. A women’s trike course was also offered. Saturday for closing ceremonies, Merlin and Beverly Mayon were honored for retiring District Director. Red and Brenda Roussel were sworn in as the new District Directors. Congratulations to both couples. n May, we are planning on going to the Texas District Convention in Tyler, Texas, the Deridder Mudbug Rally and then the Arkansas District Convention in Harrison, Arkansas. We have a busy month ahead of us, but we are excited and ready. Looking forward to seeing a lot of you at the upcoming rallies and conventions. We are just hoping the weather will cooperate so we can ride. Mike & Lorie Judice

Hello Louisiana Members Hello Wingers, Well as you can guess the last two weeks have been in the fast lane for Brenda and I . We would like to start with again thanking Merlin and Bev Mayon for the great job in leading the La. District the last three years. You have done a great job and helped us to grow our Chapter of the Year Program. We would like to thank our outgoing Couple of the Year, Jim and Reba Berry. Also congratulate them on being selected the 2014 Region Couple of the Year. Not to forget this year District Couple of the Year, Mike and Lorie Judice from Chapter B, we know they will represent La. well. La. District MEC/Asst. District Directors

Hello Louisiana,

May 2014

We want to start off by congratulating Chapter LA-M for becoming the new 2013 La. District "CHAPTER OF THE YEAR". They are the "best of the best" Chapter from our District for the year 2013. What an honor! GREAT JOB and once again…CONGRATULATIONS from the La. District Team!!! With this honor came the CHOY Traveling trophy, which the 2012 Chapter of the Year, Chapter K, turned over to them, a very nice “Hand crafted, Laser engraved, personalized wooden wood plaque from Woodwing Art (Thank you Mitch and Marie Kilgore – Woodwing Art Owners). We hope that all the Chapter Directors are getting on board with the Chapter of the Year Program and have a “Chapter of the Year Coordinator” already working on competing for next year’s honor. If you don’t "PARTICIPATE" you won’t even have a chance to win this prestigious award. The “CHOY” program has three levels, which are “Bronze”, “Silver” and “Gold”. Even if your Chapter does not win they will be still be recognized at next year’s La. District Convention for the level they achieved. We will make your Chapter feel special too!!! What are you waiting for? The Chapter of the Year 2014 Program Guide and Score Sheet can be found on GWRRA's webpage www.gwrra.org under the "Officers" tab/"MEP" or "Officers Connection" page. If you have any questions regarding the Chapter of the Year program let us know, by e-mailing us at [email protected]. We would also like to congratulate Mike and Lorie Judice from Chapter LA-B, for becoming the new 2014 La. District Couple of the Year. We know they will represent Louisiana very well! Becky and I would also like to congratulate Tony Cefalu from Chapter LA-K for receiving the 2013 Chapter Membership Enhancement Coordinator of the Year Award, a very nice plaque, from Woodwing Art. Tony always completed his contacts and sent in his reports on time. He’s always thinking about getting people to join GWRRA and come to their meetings and comes up with ideas to help make this happen. Tony also recruited 12 new GWRRA members for 2013. The Louisiana District is very lucky to have Chapter MEC’s in all 11 of our Chapters. They all are doing a great job, which made this year’s award difficult to choose just one of them. With that said, we would like to say a special “Thank You” to each of them! They all are hard at work trying to retain our members and bring in new ones. Let’s all help them to GROW Louisiana!!! Hope to see everyone at the Texas District Convention on May 8-10th in Tyler, Texas and at the Arkansas District Convention in Harrison, Arkansas on May 22-25th. If you can’t make these Conventions we will hopefully see you at the Mudbug Rally on May the 17th in Deridder. . Be safe everyone and let's all help to GROW Louisiana!!! Tim and Becky Dinnel La.
