Although, the weather did not seem to cooperate with us to plan any rides on the weekends, it did let us enjoy working in Santa’s Kitchen at Noel Acadien au Village on the three Thursday’s in December. As always, we have a blast and at the same time help partake in volunteering to aid in meeting the total development and enrichment needs to provide quality of life type services to the citizens of LARC. The chapter has been doing this for 16 years and LARC’s staff looks forward to us helping every year.

By The Book

“By the Book” articles are intended to help familiarize GWRRA Volunteer Leaders and Members with the policies, procedures, and information contained in the GWRRA Officer’s Handbook (OHB). A copy of the Officer’s Handbook can be found at the following Internet website: www.gwrra.org/oconnect/officerhandbook.html. Please feel free to reprint these articles in Region, District, or Chapter newsletters.

What Else is There? Why did you join GWRRA? That is a question we all get asked from time to time. While many of the answers revolve around riding and the fellowship of Chapter life (which is the part I like the most!), there are many who join for other reasons. Which spawns the question, are you getting the most out of your GWRRA mem-bership? How long has it been since you checked out the ever expanding list of benefits available as part of your membership in GWRRA? There are many ways being a member of GWRRA can save you money – and not just when traveling. Do you mention having taken GWRRA rider courses when you renew your bike in-surance? Many companies will give you a discount for keeping those current. And speaking of insurance, how many of you are paying for roadside assistance as an addition to your bike insurance premium? We get it for free as part of our GWRRA membership, so you can eliminate it from your bike insurance (if you have Rescue Plus you can remove roadside assistance coverage from your car insurance as well). There are discounts on life, health, and long term care insurance, cell phone plans, office supplies and other non-travel related purchases. When traveling, do you have the GWRRA discount information on lodging, car rental, or even cruises? Have you taken advantage of the GWRRA trip planning services? Many of the benefits are de-scribed in the Officer Handbook, however I always recommend going to the 'Benefits' page under the 'Members' tab of www.gwrra.org for the most current list. The more money you can save by taking advantage of discounts offered to GWRRA Members, the more money you'll have available for participating in GWRRA events or purchasing that all important 'safety chrome'. The more you know...the better it gets! Jack Wagner

Thanks for the Memories I hope looking back at 2013 gives you as much pleasure as it gives me. It was an amazing year and I can't believe it went by as fast as it did. There are so many great memories of times with my Goldwing family. Seems like only yesterday folks were enjoying the camaraderie of a New Year's Day get together, or for the more fortunate, celebrating with a New Year's Day ride. Then it was the flurry of District Business meetings in January, and the first thing I knew it was time for Region H to kick off the rally season. What about the imagination and creativity shown in the theme bike show – TX-T out in force with their Wings all wearing sunglasses. Or what about Dale Tritsch from KS in his 'minimal' Hawaiian outfit. And who can forget Sam Belinoski's performance during the crazy legs contest? Okay, some memories may best be forgotten! Then it was on to more memories made in conjunction with rallies in Louisiana (I nearly froze to death riding nearly all the way from Edmond in the rain with temps in the mid-40's to that one), Texas (when I spent all day with friends riding over 300 miles to get to our destination which if taking a direct route would have been only 2 hrs from my home), Arkansas, and Kansas (another wet ride) before the last one of the season in Oklahoma (yet another wet and cold adventure). Oh yeah, the soggy Wing Ding came in the middle. Hmm, sounds like I ride in the rain a lot – all of my friends will attest to that! Maybe that's why I have to ride alone a lot. There were also a multitude of other great rides and memories too numerous to write about here. While there are two 'once in a lifetime' events from 2013 I will never forget (being named International Trainer of the Year at Wing Ding and being appointed your Region Director), the things I cherish the most are the times spent with all of my Goldwing family during the year. The friendship, the laughter, in some cases the sadness, but always the joy of just being together both with and without the bikes. That is what this great Association is all about. It’s often said the motorcycles are what brought us together; it’s the relationships that keep us together. Here's wishing everyone a happy and prosperous New Year. I know everyone can't do everything placed on the calendar. However, I look forward to seeing each of you as we all participate wherever and whenever we can. Until next month – ride like your life depends on it! Jack Wagner Region H Director

La Gazette Des Cajun

Gerald Faulk Chapter Educator Chapter “B” Educator First Aid Kits Does yours need a check-up? By: Cash Anthony Do you carry a First Aid kit on your bike? If so, when is the last time you took a look inside? Many riders probably carry kits which were purchased to meet a perceived safety requirement (or to qualify for a safe-riding badge), but if you don't know what your First Aid kit contains, you may be unpleasantly surprised if you ever need to use it. What passes for a First Aid kit from sources such as discount stores and auto supply shops (and sometimes given away as Poker Run prizes) may be woefully short of what is needed for our sport. In case of a motorcycle accident, I dislike to say it, but Band-Aids ain't gonna help much, folks.

I was lucky enough to take a First Aid course a couple of years ago with some of the best EMS people I've ever met, at the home of our Assistant CDs for GWTA Chapter "I", Kathy and John Holly. The team who taught the course had handled serious accidents on a daily basis -- in fact,  the woman in charge told me it was rare for them to be on the job for a shift without having to perform CPR at least once -- and they had come upon a number of accidents involving motorcyclists. They stressed several things that have really stuck in my mind. Your First Aid kit needs to have a really good pair of scissors in it, to cut away (thick) clothing. If you can't see the injured area, it's hard to figure out what is best to do. You may find it worthwhile to invest in a heavy-duty shears which can handle thick material. Every rider should carry a pair (several pairs is best) of latex gloves to be used in case of an accident where blood is spilled. Having them on your bike may allow per sons who want to assist you to make that decision without fear of contamination, as well as being available to you to help someone else. A good First Aid kit should have a number of triangle bandages in it, which can be easily made from inexpensive muslin purchased at any fabric or discount department store -- I got mine for about .99 a yard. These pieces should be large enough that

you can make a sling from them, or fold them to use as a pressure-point type bandage, or put them on a head injury to hold other bandages into place. Mine are about 30" by 30" and are cut on the diagonal. These are just unbleached muslin, but they are clean and strong and BIG. I've NEVER seen a commercially purchased First Aid kit with these supplied. If you need more than one (for example, after making a sling for an arm, it's a good idea to immobilize that arm by binding it to the upper body), you can tie several of these together if the patient is a large individual. Carrying a minimum of three triangle bandages would be a good idea. I've also seen very few kits that have anything like enough sterile gauze pads. If you need to put pressure on a bleeding wound, you'll go through these items fast and will want enough to add another clean one often. NOTE: Place a new gauze patch on top of an existing blood soaked patch in order to prevent tearing any existing clotting that has begun and reopening a wound. It is helpful to have a bottle of filtered or distilled water in your kit. This can be useful in case of broken bones, eye injuries, cleaning out other minor injuries, and for dehydration. If you've got a compound fracture, it may be helpful to put a muslin bandage over a damp gauze bandage on the end of the exposed bone, to keep it from drying out, though an experienced EMS person has advised to simply use a clean (sterile), dry, dressing as you would any other open wound. Many minor problems can be dealt with initially by washing them with clean water, and debris in the eye can often be relieved by this, with nothing else required. (Even if the water isn't distilled or filtered, it can still be used if it's of potable quality.) In the case of very bad head injuries, it's not unusual to have substantial eye injuries. Unfortunately, eyes can come out of place on impact. The recommended First Aid in this situation is to have a cup (like a clean Styrofoam cup) available to contain the damaged and displaced eye, and to strap that cup onto the face with a triangle bandage or use a roll of gauze. The medical folks today can do amazing things to put an eye back into place, but it's a good idea to

8

bandage both eyes to keep the person from panicking (and to slow the 'eye-matching' reflexes, which try to make our eyes work together), while touching and reassuring the injured party. Having a clean cup in your kit may permit you to do someone an invaluable service by helping to save their sight. Those who haven't taken a CPR or First Aid class in a while might be interested to know that the American Heart Association guidelines on CPR have been changing gradually. The last time I took one (about 14 months ago), I found that the procedure was not exactly the same as what I'd been taught in my previous courses. But all these courses do strongly recommend that a person who is going to administer CPR have a barrier available to protect them from the bodily fluids of the injured party. This may be a plastic gadget that looks like a kitchen gripper, with a hole in it for a breathing tube, or a more sophisticated mask that can keep a rescuer's face and lips away from the injured party while he or she breathes for the person who's down. These items are inexpensive and are available at medical supply shops, but I've yet to see a commercial First Aid kit that comes with one. Most simple First Aid kits contain some kind of antiseptic ointment or cream. These can be useful for minor sunburns or insect bites, but they should usually NOT be used on an serious injury. When the medical folks start working on a wound, they don't want to wonder what has already been applied to it. When in doubt, throw it out.

In case of an accident, the first response these days is to call 911. In most regions of the country, even in rural areas, emergency assistance can be sent out right away. However, if you ever become a witness to a bad accident, you'll discover how important it is to have current information and adequate First Aid gear, even if you can't really do very much at the scene. It may save a life to know what NOT to do. When you reach for that First Aid kit, you'll be better prepared if you know what's in it and how to use it. Take some time to look at what you're carrying on your bike, to see if it's what you really need.

Merlin and Beverly Mayon District Directors

Hello Louisiana Members

January, 2014

HAPPY NEW YEAR December was a really slow month as far as riding goes, because of all the Christmas shopping, and Christmas parties.

Since I write this article at the end of the month, it must mean that Christmas is over and all the Gold Wingers that were good are polishing their new bikes that their wives got them. LOL

Well, maybe next year??

With the year coming to an end, it’s time to start thinking about your plans for 2014: We will start with the District Business Meeting in January on the 18th. This is the time of year that the District Team passes on information from National to all the Chapter’s core teams. We will also make a few Officer changes at the Chapter level. Make sure your Chapter Treasurer has all necessary paperwork ready. Next, we think about Wingless Weekend; District invites all Louisiana members for a get together for free food, fun and games. This takes place on February 14 & 15, 2014 in DeRidder, LA. Chapter H, don’t forget the Chapter Cup!!! Maybe some other Chapter will win it.

Starting in April, the Conventions start in Region H. The Region H Convention will be first and all the District Conventions will follow. So check the Louisiana District Website for all the dates. Try to make what you can and have some fun by participating.

This past year we lost some GW friends to a variety of illnesses and our thoughts and prayers go out to their families. As I write this article, we have some GW friends that are sick and our thoughts and best wishes go out to them as well.

We hope the New Year brings with it good health to all of our friends and family in 2014.

Once again we would like to remind everyone that the District Business Meeting will be held in Lafayette, at the Ramada Lafayette Conference Center (use to be the Holiday Inn), on Saturday, January 18th. MEC’s, please make every effort to attend. We will be having a break out session to talk about the MEC program and will also be introducing a couple new ideas you will be able to take back with you to use during your Chapter Gathering's. If you have anything that you are doing that might benefit the other Chapter MEC’s and would like to share it please bring it with you.

With the new year comes more rides, Chapter Gatherings, Conventions (Rallies), Wing Ding and a whole lot more friends. Let's get this party started!!! This would be a good time to get the new members that have joined GWRRA engaged in all the activities that GWRRA has to offer them. Here is a schedule of events (can also be found on the District Web Page) that I hope everyone will take the time to look at and use to start planning which events you plan on attending. Please talk about these in your Chapter Gatherings, put them on your calendars and discussion forums. Invite the new members and guests to come with you. (Please check the District Web Page for updates to the schedule throughout the year.)

Chapter Directors, if possible please bring your completed Chapter of the Year packet to the District Business meeting. If you can't bring it to the meeting the deadline to have it submitted is January 31, 2014. I will also be sending out an e -mail reminder. For more information about the MEC program please click on "MEP" under the Officers tab on the GWRRA website. Tim & Becky Dinnel Region H 2013 - 2014 Couple of the Year

January 2014 Greetings from your Region H Couple of the Year,

Attention all Chapter Directors: It is time to select your new Chapter Couple of the Year 2014-2015. Remember that the Couple of the Year Program has two purposes: First and foremost, the program provides an opportunity for local Chapters to recognize and honor a couple each year for their dedication, accomplishments and participation within the Chapter. Secondly, it establishes a process for identifying outstanding couples who can serve their Districts, Regions, and ultimately the International GWRRA organization as ambassadors and spokespersons. At the Chapter level, being selected a Chapter Couple of the Year is an honor bestowed on a deserving couple who has shown dedication and commitment to their Chapter. Being selected as Chapter Couple of the Year is just like being presented an award. For your reading enjoyment, I would recommend the Couple of the year Program Manual. The more knowledge we acquire al-lows us to make better, informed decisions. Knowledge is power....support the Couple of the Year Program. Here are 4 of "The Top 10 Reasons Why Your Chapter Needs a Couple of the Year" Selecting a Chapter Couple of the Year is a way your chapter can “give back” to a couple who has worked hard for the chapter and deserves recognition. Being Chapter Couple of the Year should be viewed as an honor and not a job. Visitation with other chapters by the Chapter Couple of the Year can increase inter-chapter activities and im prove relation-ships with other chapters. Chapter spirit can increase when chapter participants show support and demonstrate their pride for their Chapter Couple of the Year. Selection as Chapter Couple of the Year often leads to personal growth for the couple, and they usually take on more responsibility in leadership positions. Every chapter has within it a deserving couple who has the qualifications to be selected as your next Chapter Couple of the Year. Remind your Chapter Couple of the Year that their primary duty will be to have "FUN" and be themselves. Be safe & we'll see you down the road, Tim & Becky Dinnel
