PRESIDENT’S WELCOME One hundred years of memories

First and foremost, I want to say thank you to all those who are part of the Lincoln Days Celebration. Whether it be an organizer, a sponsor, a vendor, a parade participant, or a patron, community support is what has made Lincoln Days a successful celebration for 45 years.

all. But my favorite memories there are of school field trips, Sarah Graham prom pictures, and Lincoln Days lining those stairs President my Senior year with my classmates as many did before and many will do for generations to come.

I’m so excited about this year’s theme, “100 Years of Memories.” In connection with the National Park Service, who celebrated 100 years this summer, we chose a theme that would showcase Larue Countians’ fond memories of both Lincoln Days and Abraham Lincoln’s Birthplace. Fond memories are defined as something or someone that causes you to remember something with great pleasure. Personally, I remember Lincoln Days in many different ways. I remember it as a child who couldn’t wait for the parade to start and was in awe of the Pioneer events. I remember Lincoln Days being one of the social events of the year when I was a teenager. I also remember it as a family business owner who knew that Lincoln Days was our busiest and most profitable day of the year. However, my most cherished memory was taking my daughter for the first time and seeing it all through her eyes. Abraham Lincoln’s Birthplace also brings forth fond memories that many of us share: hiking up the steps to the cabin, the coolness of the spring, or walking the pristine woods that surround it

Since joining the Board of Directors for Lincoln Days, I have enjoyed listening to the stories of our long standing volunteers about their memories of festivals past. Although some memories are of challenges they faced, they always reflect on them with a sense of fondness and accomplishment. I have since created my own set of stories, and want to invite you to consider joining our ranks and supporting the festival with commitment of your time. We look forward to seeing you come out and celebrate and relive the memories of a great president, volunteer, and representative of our dear town. It is our hope that you create many memories of your own with your friends and family, while helping to support the many local businesses, shop owners, and community volunteers that help make Lincoln Days a success. Though Lincoln Days may only be celebrated for two days of the year, the fond memories created will remain in our hearts and shared for many years to come.

COUNTY JUDGE EXECUTIVE’S WELCOME Enjoy the hospitality of our great community

Perhaps no other individual has been able to shape our nation and world as did Abraham Lincoln. We know the early years of a person’s life have the greatest influence on who that individual will become. This is the time Lincoln spent in LaRue County and we, as well as all of Kentucky, should be proud that our ancestors shaped and influenced the life of our nation’s greatest President. Lincoln Days is a celebration unlike any other. Rail Splitting, Pioneer Games, and other activities associated or connected to Lincoln’s life and times make Lincoln Days a unique celebration of Lincoln and the era in which he lived. However, the greatest attribute of Lincoln Days is the tremendous folks who call our community home, working together to make Lincoln Days and our community a success. For those who have given countless hours on Lincoln Days 2016, as well as Lincoln Days of the

past, I give you my sincere gratitude. To our participants and guests, Tommy Turner LaRue County I hope this is the Judge/Executive most enjoyable Lincoln Days ever and an event you will cherish in your memories for years to come. For our first time visitors, please explore all the Lincoln Days activities, our Lincoln related sites and enjoy the hospitality of the great citizens of our community. If you need assistance or have questions, please let us know. We’re always willing to lend a hand. Have fun at Lincoln Days 2016!

MAYOR’S WELCOME

Old and new, our festival has much to offer

Welcome to Hodgenville and LaRue County as we celebrate Abraham Lincoln’s legacy with one of Kentucky’s longest running hometown festivals. Volunteers of all ages have come together to make Lincoln Days worth all the fuss. Business owners have spruced up their entry ways and window displays, local school children have submitted their best artwork, Lincoln impersonators have dusted off their stove-pipe hats, vendors have their creations ready to display in all their splendor, and parade participants have created eye catching floats to make the trip to town worth everyone’s time. Of course, just because our festival has been held for decades, that doesn’t mean it’s the same festival year after year. Our community is always changing, new businesses have opened, new vendors will set up beside booths everyone has come to expect, and the parade always has bright new faces. LaRue County is unique in having two National Park sites within its borders. We are the only county in the nation with such a distinction. Whether you’re visiting, or a resident who may not have been in a

while, make sure to visit Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Kenny DeVore Site. The Abraham Hodgenville Mayor Lincoln Boyhood Home near Athertonville is now open after renovation. Whether participating in the pioneer games or just taking in the excitement on the creek front, voting for your favorite quilt in the historic sanctuary of Hodgenville Christian Church, having a traditional country breakfast at the Woman’s Club, browsing craft booths, hunting for your favorite artists’ works, finding that perfect spot to watch the parade, or simply visiting with new and old friends; Lincoln Days has something for everyone. We look forward to seeing neighbors and welcoming new friends to town. Sincerely, Kenny DeVore, Mayor

HERE is our national bump of reverence, that the generosity of American subscribers has made possible the preservation of the birth-places of Shakespeare and Burns, and yet lets pass into shameful ruin the land upon which was born and bred a man whom all nations have accepted as statesman, hero and martyr? This is preeminently the day of “patriotism” in America. Our lawmakers declaim of it, and patriotic societies collect and expend vast sums of money in perpetuating memories and building monuments to many who deserve them, and perhaps a good many who

Lincoln Days • lincolndays.org

do not. And yet, while all this is going on, the home place of the unique man of American history is being overlooked, forgotten, permitted to pass into the hands of the irreverent, and is now about to have heaped upon it an indignity which it is safe to say could occur in no other country in the world. To say double indignity would perhaps better convey an idea of the fate that seems to await the old farm where Abraham Lincoln was born, for not only has it been advertised for sale to satisfy the claim of a few paltry dollars that the state of Kentucky has against it for unpaid taxes, but an enterprising individual from Chicago has his plans perfected whereby

he proposes to bid it in, and to build an institution for the treatment of drunkards and morphine fiends upon the exact spot where the great martyr was born. This may be all very well from strictly the business standpoint of this busy and aggressive age, but the idea that the birthplace of the man to whom this country owes its greatest debt of gratitude should fall into the hands of speculators who will use it s historic associations for advertising purposes, and who will convert the haunts of the childhood of the great Liberator into promenades for a lot of helpless unfortunates, is not a pleasant one for the patriotic American to contemplate.

In memory of those who made a difference Dorothy Deane Doyle Smith was a vibrant and active member of our community for more than 65 years. She was a co-chairman of the annual “Heart” drive for 25 years. She was president of the Hodgenville Woman’s Club for two non-consecutive terms; during her second term, the club wrote and sold the first edition of the “LaRue County Kitchens” cookbook. As two-term LCHS Band Booster president, her focus was to fund new uniforms and an international competition in Toronto. Dorothy Deane served as the sixth president of Lincoln Days for two consecutive years (1982-83) and was instrumental in the formation of the Lincoln Singers, a community chorus with over 30 members under the direction of Wilma Terry and Ron Bryan. She received numerous

awards and recognition including the UK College of Agriculture Distinguished Alumnus award, Kentucky Colonel, LaRue County’s Master Farm Homemaker Award and Extension Council Award of Excellence. Throughout her life, she was incredibly civic-minded and worked hard to accomplish many projects that benefit our community. LINCOLN DAYS SCHOLARSHIP 2016 Winner’s Essay

2 Andrew Coy

As a great Kentuckian once advised, “Whatever you are, be a good one.” This famous line was spoken by possibly the most famous Kentucky native, Abraham Lincoln. The legacy left from Lincoln’s monumental presidency still serves as an example in morals, ethics, and honesty. As the National Park Service and Lincoln Birthplace celebrate their 100th anniversary, they have served as a legacy to our communities and country. Through their preservation of history, the Lincoln Birthplace, as well as the other parks that make up the National Park Service, allows the history of many of America’s most well-known locations a place to not only tour and enjoy, but learn and take in the wonders our nation has given us. Specifically speaking for the Lincoln Birthplace, numerous afternoon walks, picnics, and class tours have been made through those tree lined sidewalks and pathways. While being able to claim one of our nation’s greatest leaders of all time as a Hodgenville native, Hodgenville can also take great pride in the beautiful Lincoln Birthplace that we have. Through the park, numerous visitors have made their way to our humble town, getting to experience the same beauty we get to experience daily. Seeing the replica of the simple, single room cabin Lincoln began in can serve as an inspirational story to others to see that with hard work, dedication, and motivation, achieving your dreams and aspirations truly is possible. Lincoln Birthplace allows the story of Lincoln’s humble beginnings to be brought to life for so many who pass through the same land Lincoln also once tread. Hodgenville is not alone in a community taking pride in their bit of history it has to offer the world. Through the National

Park Service, communities all over the nation can give to others their little piece of history. These lasting impacts and natural wonders would not be possible without the contributions to our nation through the National Park Service after these 100 years. It is with confidence that I feel the National Park Service will continue to give back to our nation with the beauty of our parks to visitors and locals alike for the next 100 years to come and the years that follow those. Thank you, National Park Service for giving our community a chance to share and preserve the gift in our community as well as the gift of so many other communities all across the country.

RAILSPLITTING CONTEST Sunday, October 2 • 2 p.m. CreekFront Park One of Lincoln Days most enduring and endearing events is the Railsplitting Competition, an activity closely associated with Abraham Lincoln. The timed event begins at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 2 at Creekfront Park. Lincoln Days hosts contests at the professional, amateur level and junior level. The Professional Class is any person who signs the register as a Professional Splitter. He will be bound to this class henceforth. A Professional Splitter will split eight rails. The Amateur Class is any person who has never split in the Professional Class. Amateurs must be at least 18 years of age. An Amateur Splitter will split eight rails. The Junior Class is for any person between the ages of 14 and 18. Proof of age must be shown and a parent or guardian must sign a release. A Junior Splitter will split six rails unless the judges deem it necessary to split four rails from a half log (this would be due to number of logs available). Participants furnish their own tools – which are inspected by judges prior to the contest. The decision of the judges is final. The entry fee is $10 per individual. Reminder: Parking is not available at CreekFront Park for spectators. For more information, visit www.lincolndays.org.

57 Time marches on and technology changes with it. Stereoscopic cartes-deviste provided 3-D views of the birthplace in the early 20th centure and mid-century ViewMaster advertising campaign funded by the petroleum industry engaged millions in “virtual” cross-country travel. By the time President Eisenhower visited the Birthplace in 1954, almost every home in America had a camera. Across the nation, shoe-boxes are full of these grainy blackand-white images. By 2016, almost every hand has a camera, and visitors share their memories for and with their future generations has created many return pilgrimages.

The editorial and photos were part of the Lincoln Museum’s 100 Images. 100 years exhibit, it was part of the Centennial Celebration of Abraham Lincoln’s Birthplace NHP that was held July 16-17, 2016.
