Postbaccalaureate refers to BSN, BA, BS, or MN degrees, including non-nursing degrees. In addition to the core PhD program coursework, these students must take 12 additional graduate credits related to core nursing coursework; course decisions should be determined by advisers and students based on individual student needs. b
The overall minimum credits required for graduation is 70 for those who were admitted with a baccalaureate degree or a degree in a non-nursing field, and 58 for those who were admitted with a master’s degree. Most students take more than the minimum.

Taking courses in the order and semester listed below is recommended to enable students to complete courses with other students who were admitted at the same time as well as to ensure that prerequisites are completed properly. Year 1 Fall Semester Nurs 8180: Doctoral Proseminar I: Scholarly Development (1 cr) Nurs 8175: Quantitative Research Design and Methods (3 cr) Nurs 8172: Theory and Theory Development for Research (3 cr) Statistics (3 cr) Total = 10 credits Spring Semester Nurs 8171: Qualitative Research Design and Methods (3 cr) Nurs 8190: Critical Reading in Nursing Research (2 cr) Nurs 8152 Scholarship in Health Care Ethics (3 cr) Statistics (3 cr) Total = 11 credits (+ minor or additional courses as determined with adviser)

Year 3 Fall Semester Dissertation (Nurs 8888; 12 cr) Total = 12 credits Spring Semester Dissertation (Nurs 8888; 12 cr) Total = 12 credits Minimum required School of Nursing credits for the PhD is 32 (nursing theory and methodology cores) + 2 (electives) + 24 (dissertation)= 58 credits for postmasters students. A minimum of 18 additional graduate nursing credits are required for PhD students with baccalaureate degree or master’s degree in field other than nursing; 12 (graduate nursing core) + 32 (nursing theory and methodology cores) + 2 (electives) + 24 (dissertation) = 70 credits. Most students will exceed the minimum.
