Hello Teachers! Here is the research packet we will be starting after Christmas. You will notice there are 2 packets (A and B – denoted in the bottom right-hand corner). The difference between the packets is the note taking pages. Please look through the packet and tell me if there is anything I can add or change! Also I would like a list of students who you think would work better with the A packet or B packet. You can do that below. My lesson plans are as follows (please keep in mind I am trying to do this with just 30 minute periods): Week 1: - Big6 as a research plan and “do” several real life Big6 examples – going to movies, playing in a football game. - introduce the project…they will each choose a Winter Olympic sport to research - look up a list of the sports that they will choose from (practice Google parsing we have been working on) Week 2:

- brainstorm what information we would need for report and organize that list to come up with 3 (4th grade) or 4 (5th and 6th grade) focus questions - students select sport

Week 3:

- decide what resources to use. - find appropriate web sites together…evaluate web site lesson

Week 4:

- how to take good notes (grades 5, 6: also keeping track of sources used) - prepare our note taking papers - begin research

Week 5-7/8: - RESEARCH!! (Olympics are happening) - We will work on one colored sheet (focus question) per week Week 8?:

- creating something to show what we learned. Unfortunately, I do not have access to lab time and so we would be creating something simple like a brochure about the sport. If you have the time and inclination, you could take the kids notes and have them creates something more impressive in the lab tying in lessons on a technology presentation skill. Let me know if you do this and I will go directly to citing sources lessons with grades 5 &6. We can try to do something simple to cite sources if it fits in your curriculum. Let me know! THANK YOU! Students Packet A _______________________________ _______________________________ _______________________________ _______________________________ _______________________________ _______________________________ _______________________________ _______________________________ _______________________________

Students Packet B ________________________________ ________________________________ ________________________________ ________________________________ ________________________________ ________________________________ ________________________________ ________________________________ ________________________________

Grade 4 students will all do packet B with 3 focus questions. Students can add details and focus questions to differentiate.
