wenty years ago when Linhof introduced their first TECHNORAMA camera a new era started for practically

undi storted wide-angle photography on rollfilm with the extreme format of 6x17 cm/ 2 1/4 x 6 3/4 in. which corresponds in area to three 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 in. exposures. Since then not su rpri sing ly many photographers have been using this type of camera with its dramatic 3:1 aspect ratio. One major reason has always been the ideal combination of the operational ease of a medium for-

For the TECHNORAMA 617 S III the proven design principles of the former models have been maintained and improved. Now that new Schneider lenses are available in superb XL quality Linhof has decided to offer a new TECH NORAMA with 3 super performance interchangeable lenses matching a super format camera. Th e TECHNORAMA 617 S III is a system camera . For each lens a spec ial finder is offered. Lens change is extremely simple : unlock 2 screws holding

the lens panel which houses the tube, lens in helical focus, release and protec-

tion. The fo ll ow ing lenses with integrated helica l focus are available: Wide-a ngle Super Angulon XL 5.6/72 mm, effective ang le of view 102° in the diagonal format, image circle 226 mm . Furthermore, Super Angulon XL 5.6/90 mm, angle of view 90°, im age circle 236 mm plus the Apo-Symmar 5.6/180 mm, angle of view 53°, image circle 263 mm. Apart from the extreme wide-angle views offered with the 72 mm lens and the 90 mm lens there is now a normal foca l length ava il ab le of f 180 mm as a panorami c view.

This is the camera for the demanding feature photographer: whenever impressive large format quality is required wi th rollfilm convenience the TECHNORAMA will be uti lized. The camera for a user who spec ializes in architectural, industrial, scenic and travel photography bringing the superior qual ity of the larger format as a new way of creating visually dramatic vertica l and horizonta l pictures with extremely hi gh rendition which can normally on ly be achieved with 5x7 in . large format cameras . The high resol uti on rollfi lm s avai lab le are now fully

utilized by the new superb lenses. Since the projection is centra l thanks to the centrally adapted lenses there wi ll be no curvature of the horizon even with the extreme panorama. Creative photography is especia lly possible with the wide-angle lenses by stressing perspective lines thus ach iev ing interesting results with an exc iting foregro und and a wide background. The light fa ll-off towards the edges of the picture with any extreme w ide-angle lens is compensated by specially designed concentric graduated center filters offered as accessories.

The precision hel ical focusing mounts of the lenses, the soft pressure shutter release, with thread for cab le release, the robust eng ineering of the film transport, the lens protection bracket for added safety are only few of the features making the Linhof TECHNORAMA 617 S III a highly useful tool. Sophisticated bright-line viewfinders (Albada system) with cross hairs and reflected sp irit leve l for reli ab le framing the precise perpendicular orientation of the camera. For close-range photos th e inner top and inner lateral line frames mark the parallax correction.

he reflected spirit leve l visible in the viewfinder controls the vertical orientation of the filmplane and serves to properly align the camera in order to avoid co nvergin g lines. Horizontal alignment (lateral leve lling) is controlled by a reflected reference cross which shows if the camera is ti Ited to the left or right side. The rugged die-cast body offers decisive advantages: stable, designed for professional use, optimum film flatness for conventional rollfilm 120 for 4 frames or rollfilm 220 for 8 frames by sliding a spring-loaded pressure plate. Another adva ntage for achieving professional results is the central shutter system of the lenses allowing exposure times of 1 sec. to 1/500 sec. or 1/400 sec. Distance settings in feet or meters in comb in atio n with the line frames permit close-up photos. The new camera generation of the Tech norama opens up new dimensions in creative photography, bringing the superior quality of the large r format to a compact camera providing the handling convenience generall y assoc iated with the use of rollfilm equipment.

The lenses of the TECHNORAMA 617 S 11/ offer optimum quality. Exposure times of 1 to 1/500 sec. (1/400 sec. with f 180 mm) permit quick hand-held shooting. Apertures range from f/5.6 to f/45 .(64 at 180 mm). The depth-of-field required can be fully utilized.

The TECHNORAMA can also be employed to shoot pictures by using a predetermined portion only and is therefore particularly suitable for sectional ~nlargements from vertical images. Architectural views without converging lines can be obtained by cutting off any unwanted foreground matter in the final print.

The soft pressure shutter release, with thread for cable release is part of the lensboard. The lens protection bracket offers added safety. The tripod socket (3/8") is incorporated in the lens assembly.

Visible in the finder: focal length, spirit level, bright-line frame for picture section, inner top and inner lateral line frames marking the parallax cortection for close range photos, reference cross indicating the optical axis to facilitate camera alignment. The spirit level also controls the vertical orientation of the film plane for avoiding converging lines.

The focal effect of the picture section is visible in the landscape photo on this page. The individual bright line frames for the picture section are clearly visible in the finder.
