MARY KINNEY’S MEMORIES Leaping out of the chair. You were mad at Ann and I when we were young and you got so mad that you took off your red slipper and swatted us with the red slipper. Ann and I started to whimper and cry then as soon as you walked out of the room we started to laugh because it didn’t hurt. You were so pissed off at us. One year for Christmas you wanted red slippers. Dad bought you red slippers and every time you would go by the Christmas tree you would say “those are my red slippers”. So Dad got tired of hearing that so he went out in the pasture and got some horse manure and had us girls wrap it up in the same box an wrapping paper. When you came out of Christmas morning you wanted your red slippers so you grabbed that box and when you opened it up instead of red slippers you got horse manure. When you finally got the slippers they didn’t fit and Anne ended up getting them.

RICHARD KINNEY’S MEMORIES I thought I was stupid until I was 17. Mom heard me say I was too stupid to be a Doctor. She made it clear to me that I was not and that I could do anything I set my mind to. Well my mind was not set to be a doctor but thanks to her I got in my mind that I wasn't stupid and I decided to give college a try. When I was a little boy I'd get cold in the night and climb into bed with mom...that was the warmest place in the world. My buddy Wade Dittis and I were playing with a toy cannon that actually shot fire. Mom was leaning over BBQ'n steaks on a HIBACHI stove when we shot her in the fanny. Scared her to death...and it melted the polyester pants slightly. Sorry 'bout that Mom. "Diner is served" was a beautiful sound coming from mom. Getting a letter from mom, usually they started like this: "Beautiful sunny day here...." It was so fun when Mom would host a meeting of one of her many club/oranization at our house and it would be filled with discussion. While in college I got a slight rash on my leg…she had dad drive her over to Fresno the next day to make sure I was okay. As a kid looking for her and finding her in the backyard in her garden. Taking food donations to her while she sat at the food bank down the street. Hearing her say, ”Ernest I need ……..” and then seeing Dad go do it…be it a painting or something delivered. Hearing her say, “You were a joy to have” when asked what it was like to have a late life baby. Watching her roll her eyes or shake her head when dad started on a story. Seeing and hearing her pride in her children as she talked about them I love hearing say: “Fiddle and Fart around” Showing me how to have a heart by example of all her clubs and organizations.

ANN MORRETT’S MEMORIES How comforting it was that every day, after school, you would be home waiting for us. We were not only greeted with your smile but also the most wonderful smells coming from the kitchen. Everything I ever wanted to be was everything that you have been to me. My two goals in life were to become a wife and a mother. You have been a wonderful example of what it means to be a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a women, a friend and a good citizen. You taught me love of learning. Whenever I would ask you how to spell a word or who someone was you would always point to either the dictionary or encyclopedia. You were letting me know that the only way to learn was by investing my own time and energy. I did the same thing with my children and now they do the very same thing with their children. See Mama, you do not have to be in the same room, city or state to keep touching the lives of your family. I will never forget a day when I was young, a lady asked you how you divided your love between so many children. You looked straight into her eyes and said, "I don't divide my love, I multiply." I felt so loved and cherished upon hearing those words. When I had each of my children I knew exactly what you meant as I felt my heart expand with all of the love that filled it when I looked into their beautiful eyes. Both you and Dad taught me love of family and helped me to develop my deep spirituality but it was you that taught me love of country. I am proud of our country, the people who fill it and am honored that my son is serving in the Coast Guard. When I see the American flag blowing in the wind tears come to my eyes. Thank you for teaching me to be patriotic and for teaching me to be a good citizen. You hand wrote all the invitations to my wedding which was such a loving and wonderful gift in itself. One day my then fiancé received an invitation letting him know that your daughter Ann was getting married on April 6th and would he please be sure to be there on that date!

SANDY KINNEY’S MEMORIES I'm somewhat of a newcomer to the Kinney family of 15 years; so, I do not have memories of long ago. But, in those few years I have been blessed to have the best Mother-in-Law a woman could ask for. It saddens me that you weren't my first and only, that would be a gift many do not get to experience, having that one special Mother-in-Law. You have always made me feel special, as you do everyone. When I come visit it is always "Hi Honey" and when I leave it is that warm soft touch of your hand and sometimes saying "You’re a good girl" and you are telling me that you are thankful that I am taking care of and love your son. That pleases you. You are a brilliant loving woman and I am proud to say that you are my Mother-in-law. It so pleases me that you have made a path through my life. There are no words to express what your giving, kind and gentle demeanor means to me. Your entire family is blessed to have you as a Daughter, Sister, Wife, Mother, Grandma, Great Grandma, Aunt, Niece and others I might have missed. Yan Kinney, God Bless you and may He bestow his peace on your heart. Love your Daughter-in-Law, Mrs. Sandy Kinney

GALATEA DELAPP’S MEMORIES 1. Teaching me how to can peaches, peppers, and chutney 2. Those happy wonderful summers in Bishop where there was a daily suggestion for an adventure complete with geology lessons. Richard and I and friends always took the suggestions. Bristlecone Pines, Devils Postpile, assorted lakes, Hot Springs, Laws etc. 3. Teaching me about community activism and civic responsibility without ever giving a lecture - simply watching her on the phone and going to meetings for the school board, League of Women Voters, Red Cross, and the food bank. 4. Teaching me that being a a housewife, or middle aged, or not having a bunch of money was not a barrier to making a difference politically. Her invitation to the Kennedy Inauguration meant so much to me and as a result I was very emotional when I got an invitation to the Obama inauguration. 5. Showing me that democrats were not evil or stupid. I was raised by Republicans. 6. Teaching me, by example, that I needed to stay active as I got older - those daily long walks with Virgina Holland in the afternoon. 7. Introducing me to pine nuts 8. Afternoon information sessions about the origins of assorted produce. 9. Stories of Nanny. When I said I liked the largely unpopular feels and smells of the floor of the San Joaquin Valley when driving through farm land, she told me Nanny loved being surrounded by the feel and smell of the farm land, too. 10. Yan's Pot 11. Yan's Garden 12. Go Away 13. The backyard Apricot suite (and getting hit in the face with falling apricots). 14. The literature she would suggest I read during my Summer stays 15. Pulling me aside after a high school acting performance in Hawaii and telling me very seriously that I should pursue acting for a living and that she wasn't just saying that to me because she was related to me. 16. Sending me off to college with some sheets and towels from the Bishop house when I had nothing 17. When I got my first apartment and dorm food wasn't available she sent me index cards with canned ingredient recipes for easy French onion soup and clam chowder. 18. Calling her every election day for the first 10 years I could vote and asking her what and who I was supposed to vote for. 19. Goulash 20 The Athena Club. 22. Instilling in me a huge sense of our family history of patriotism 23. All the stories she recounted of every member of the family, past and present 24. All the little treasures from her house (now in my house) that she would stick in my hands when I left Bishop. 25. When she insisted that another teenage granddaughter commit to being home at a certain time and demanded to know with whom she would be spending her time, I expressed shock and asked why she would do such a thing? I stated that when I was that age and living there in the summers, I was out at all hours of the night with Richard and his male friends. She matter-of- factly responded, "Yes, but you were nerds, dear. 26. The only person who calls me, "my Geebo"

JAYNE’S BOPP MEMORIES Picking corn at a friends and shucking it with Grandma. Then she'd put a huge pot of water with salt in it on the stove and cook the corn. Next we would have a giant corn, butter, salt and pepper feast. Going with Grandma to visit her friends Laura Lutz or Virginia Holland. I also remember when Laura and Virginia would visit her and I liked Virginia's dog. Grandma's beans that we'd eat with Sheepherder's bread from Shatz'. Grandma's goulash. Grandma's cow tongue until I realized that it really was a cow's tongue. Grandma use to pay me five cents for every white butterfly I'd catch because they would lay eggs on her plants. The strawberries that Grandma would grow in the back yard. I loved those! Picking them and eating them with sugar. Grandma's apricot tree in the back yard and tiger lilies in the frond yard. The hummingbird feeder. Who can forget the "Go Away" sign? All the cute and fun Avon bottles that Grandma would buy me for Christmas. Picking pine nuts, cooking pine nuts, eating pine nuts. Grandma getting her hair done once a week. I use to think that Grandma was really old because she had gold teeth. When I got my first gold tooth in my late twenties I realized how wrong I had been! In her sweet voice saying how some people (particularly conservative republicans) were asses. TAMMY BOPP’S MEMORIES I met Yan in 1994 while Chris and I were in Bishop during our “Honeymoon”. Sparing the details of what we were doing in Bishop during our honeymoon, we met up with the Kailua Bopps at a backyard cook-out with the Kinney clan. That was the only time I ever met Yan, but she left such an impression on me. She welcomed me with a genuinely cheerful warmth, as if I had always been a member of the family. Two years later, when our son Nelson was born, Yan sent a quilted, doll-sized blanket as a baby gift. I was so touched to receive this charming, handmade gift. Nelson used that little blanket a lot to keep his dolls and stuffed animals snuggly and warm. I have not hung on to very many baby things. However, partly because it reminds of the time I met Yan, that little blanket has a special place in my heart and has been put aside in hope that maybe one day Nelson’s child will use it as he did. And the loving kindness that I felt on that first meeting with Yan will be generated for many years to come. TAMMY BOPP

LISA KAPPES’ MEMORIES

Well, I can’t top some of the others, but here are some of my favorite memories of Grandma in no particular order: Grandma’s goulash – In later years I remember my dad calling in his order for it before we would arrive to Bishop. Grandma always having a dictionary handy and teaching me new and challenging words. In particular I remember one summer afternoon when she taught me the word “connotation”. She thought that was a great word that I needed to know (and she was right). Her friends Virginia Holland (always very sweet) and Laura Lutz (who was kind enough but I thought she was a little intimidating). Grandma breaking out the aloe vera plant whenever I had a scrape or burn. Telling grandma that I had a sore throat and her giving me a clove of garlic to chew. I had no idea what I was in for and nearly threw up, but I choked it down! I never did complain of a sore throat to her again. Grandma’s apple cider vinegar gargle. Grandma’s vitamins on the kitchen table. Grandma’s “Go Away” sign. Her passion for Andrea Bocelli Grandma’s garden in the backyard. I used to feel like I could get lost in it. Grandma’s great laugh. Grandma’s beautiful singing voice. Grandma’s bottle collection. When I questioned religion, Grandma said, “Just say you believe.” Grandma’s photo albums. I wiil always remember Grandma as one of the most beautiful, kind, intelligent, and compassionate people that I’ve ever known. She is a wonderful role model!

JENNIFER MORRETT-HURST I'll never forget when I was living in Bishop the high school had an open campus so at lunch time we could leave campus. I usually would go over to grandma & grandpa's. I was sitting on the sofa one day and these two fellows walked in said, "Hello Yan, hello Ernest", then went out to the kitchen poured some coffee, from that HUGE coffee pot and then served up some of the soup or beans that was cooking on the stove. They ate, rinsed off their dishes, thanked Yan for another great meal and left. That was just AMAZING!! Then there is the garlic! Whenever you feel a chill or aches and pains or a sore throat grandmother would say to go chew on a clove of garlic. You stink to high heaven, but it worked!!! Now Georgia here is the surprise. I did not put this in her card as I did not know at the time and I want to tell her when I call but you can put this in the booklet thing. Patriotism and service to others above ones self was a motto for grandmother. In honor of your 90th birthday this year April 1, 2009 I will be introduced as an official candidate for the Lewis Kingman chapter of D.A.R.! I'm am so excited and can't wait to tell you! Happy 90th grandmother! You are in our thoughts! With love Jennifer Morrett-Hurst

CHRISTOPHER MORRETT’S MEMORIES I always remember the smells of Grandma & Grandpa's house (it's a smell I haven't found anywhere else... and it's wonderful). Any scent remotely close to that reminds me of the times growing up visiting Grandma & Grandpa up in Bishop (God's country). Grandma, you have always been a wealth of knowledge. I remember you stating, “Did you know…” and go on this long (sometimes short) conversation that made me a bit smarter than I previously started out that day. For instance, “Did you know that you can help treat a sore throat by cutting a lemon in half, draining the juice into a glass of 7-Up or Sprite, drop the rind into the glass and drink the concoction slowly. It would sting a bit at the beginning, but your throat would feel better over the course of a few hours.” I learned that from you Grandma and I’ve given that information to a multitude of patients over the last 10+ years (and it truly does work). Also, “did you know that right when you start feeling run-down (like a cold is coming on), chew on a garlic clove to combat the ailment.” I found it works and it prevent the spread of a cold as well…the strong garlic smell keeps even the loved ones away!!! Grandma, I love very much and I look forward to seeing you soon. Emma is away this weekend, but she does think the world of MY Grandma too! Love, Christopher (the Morrett one)

ELIZABETH WELLIE’S MEMORIES Here are some memories to grandma: I always loved to go over to you house and smell all the wonderful foods you were making that day. Knowing my love of cooking using a little of this and a little of that came from you! No recipes needed! Knowing if grandpa was lost in one of his famous stories you'd steer him back on track. Staying with you during my sixth grade spring break. Kelly stayed there with me and we Had a blast doing silly things and you didn't mind. During that same stay Kelly and I yelling to cute boys outside and you informing us that young ladies do not yell to boys through the window. They needed to come to the door. Helping grandpa with his stories. He'd forget something you knew what the word or place he lost was. Feeding friends and family as they were just passing through. Giving me the best mom there is!!!!! Happy Birthday Grandma we love you tremendously, Elizabeth (and family too)

EMMA MORRETT’S MEMORIES As being "new" to the family. My memories are simple -of a wonderful woman so very pround of her family and all that they achieve as well as so very accepting of those of us who were lucky enough to marry into it-even if I am an "ASStralian" - Emma Morrett

AMANDA HURST’S MEMORIES The biggest memory I have was coming over during the holidays. It was rare, but I remember those little cotton angels that hung from the ceiling. I always found it fascinating that there were so many! Now that I'm an adult I realized that each one was for a child, grandchild, and great grandchild in the family. Now that's A LOT! xoxoxox Amanda Hurst

KARIE BENTLEY’S MEMORIES Happy Birthday Grandma! Love you. You’re the best. Here are some of my memories: I love remembering standing on a chair, resting my elbows on the bar watching you cook – even as a teenager. One of my favorite things to watch you cook were those poor, but tasty little quail that got all fried up in lard. They always looked so funny, their tiny little bodies getting golden in the pan. I always loved wandering around the back yard looking at all your flowers. There were always metal crates and little wire cages around something new that was popping up. I would always peak in on those sprouting treasures. You are always full of the names of the flowers and stories about where they came from. I loved staying with you on weekends and during the summer when I was a kid. It was the best! When I was a teenager you used to turn on the star light on the front porch so my date could easily find the house – even if he had been there before. Your beautiful bottles, many of which you have passed on to me remind me of you. Sometimes I like to think of the fun you much have found looking for them. They are a treasure just like you. Your dictionary is the best-all written in on the pages that have words you looked up. You gave me a dictionary just like yours for Christmas when I was about 15. You made sure I was aware it had the Fuck in it and the “real” definition for SNAFU. I always have enjoyed the contributions you’ve made to my vocabulary. Stamps will forever remind me of you. Your collection is still growing… I always like going to the movies with you and then talking about it afterwards. Hanging you “Dumb Angels” and reading you the names on each one after they were up. Thanksgiving at your house was always the BEST. I loved watching Twilight Zone on TV in the middle room, olive on all ten of my fingers smelling the rich aroma of the dinner you were preparing. Thanksgiving at your house was my absolute favorite holiday especially when a lot of family came. I always love hearing your stories about your past especially the ones during the depression with the jelly bean man, or tales about poinsettias and haas avocados or your stories about Spanish lovers and amorous cowboys. I have lots of memories of you being active in the community, church bazaars, the food bank, Red Cross, Athena, DAR, and always have a few dollars and a warm blanket for someone who was having a rough time. I admire the compassion you have for others and your desire to help people-no strings attached. You have never been anything but loving to me. You always take pride in your family and their unique qualities and accomplishments. Thank you Grandma, you are one of the most special people and have showed me much about the kind of person I want to be.

JYLL KINNEY’S MEMORIES *Grandma giving me a dried starfish for my 5th birthday, she said that it was from her old house in Long Beach. I remember the pretty gold box that she put it in. I still have it. * "helping" Grandma cook when I was four or five and being amazed to open her kitchen cupboard and see boxes and boxes of jello and pudding mix. My parents never bought it and it seemed like Grandma had 500 boxes in that one cabinet. *Going to church every Sunday with my Grandma Bonnie and seeing Grandma Yan in the pew across from us. At Communion, I would kneel next to Grandma and she would put her hand on my back while I received the sacrament. I think of her at Communion wherever I am. *Listening to her stories, which were always accurate and weren't told over and over again unless you asked. I loved the story about the bean and the stories about Nanny. *Grandma keeping spray bottles of water to spray the cats when they were fighting, and occasionally to give Grandpa and spritz to keep him in line. *Grandma's tuna sandwiches, which always had tomatoes, onions, and pimentos (but only if pimentos were on sale at Joseph's that week!) *Being introduced to Andrea Bocelli! *Being told by my father, many many many many many many many times, that Grandma was an angel and never doubting it for a second *Grandma's elegant swearing. She is the only woman in the world who can swear gracefully and make it sound regal. I can vividly hear her saying in her melodic voice, "Well, shit". *This is an indirect memory but it relates to Grandma: a few years ago I was driving my Grandma Bonnie, Helen Dixon, and Martha Jeffs to an orchard to pick cherries. The road was bumpy and I hit a big pothole and said a cuss word, and Helen Dixon scolded me and said, "You're as bad as Yan!" *Grandma's goulash, of course, and her wonderful shrimp in aspic. *Bringing Grandma an Easter Lily on Easter Sunday and pointsettias at Christmas. *Grandma making sure that my sisters and I all had Easter baskets...generally filled with chocolate, peeps, and cans of sardines. *Singing "Here Comes Peter Cottontail" every Easter *Grandma always being there to explain or comfort me when I was little and Grandpa had told me some insane story about jackrabbits attacking my father and taking out his eye,

or when he'd paint something on my face while I was napping and I'd wake up to think it was real. *Grandma saying, "Who dat?" whenever anyone came in *Watching the Kentucky Derby faithfully every year *Instilling patriotism and civic duty in every one of her children and grandchildren, through example *Grandma is the most graceful, elegant, kind person that I have ever known or heard of, and I am so fortunate to not only know the great Virginia Ann Lenhart Kinney but to be related to her. Without being sappy or cliche, I can honestly say that she is the best person that I know and likely ever will know. I love you Grandma, thank you for being born and for being who you are to the many people who know and love you. Happy Birthday. ZARAH BENTLEY’S MEMORIES Going to McDonalds for desert and getting to keep the change. Telling everyone about my report cards – all the time. KELLY BENTLEY’S MEMORIES I remember Grandma making great beans. We’ve had bread and butter and persimmon cookies and your love of flowers. I also remember how thoughtful you are always thinking of other people. I remember you collecting all sorts of thing like California orange crates, cockroach traps and ant traps and then giving them out to everyone.

SCOTT KINNEY MEMORIES (GRANDSON SCOTT) Grandma saying “Love you Dear” as you left the house. I love that the door at Grandma and Grandpa’s house is never locked – ever!
