29TH October, 2011 The Sydney Monopoly Pub run 2011 takes into account 26 pubs throughout Sydney. The Route The route encompasses 26 streets and stations. This attempts to replicate the Monopoly board, leaving out the Electric Company, Water Works etc. The route encompasses pubs from a varied cross section, and unlike in London where it is necessary to use public transport it is possible to walk the entire route in a reasonably quick time (12 hours or so including drinks and food). Last year the run took 10 hours and was started with 25 and finished with 31, peaking at 50+ through the mid section, which made for a good crowd. The route for 2011 is: 1 - Forbes Hotel 2 - CBD (York 75) 3 - PJ O'briens 4 - Cargo Bar 5 - James Squires Brewhouse 6 - Wynyard Hotel 7 - The Occidental 8 - The Captain Cook (The Rocks) 9 - The Lord Nelson 10 - Hero Of Waterloo 11 - The Australian Hotel 12 - The Glenmore 13 - The Harbour View Hotel 14 - The Mercantile 15 - The Observer 16 - Fortune Of War 17 - Ship Inn 18 - Metro Hotel 19 - Grand Hotel 20 - Royal George Hotel 21 - Angel Bar 22 - Bar 333 23 - The Grasshopper 24 - Hotel Sweeney's 25 - Criterion Hotel 26 - The Edinburgh Castle Hotel

Starting Off Meet at the McDonalds restaurant on George st at 11:30 to leave promptly at 12:00. Any latecomers can catch up at one of the later pubs. You can get there from Wynyard or Town Hall Stations or by bus to the corner of King and George sts. Anyone coming in by public transport please note that there may be trackworks or delayed buses. See the links below for more information http://www.131500.com.au

The Strategy 26 pubs might seem like a tall order, and it is if you have a pint in each one. Since we would prefer to finish the whole route rather than pass out halfway through it is advisable to go for a half pint (aka Middy) in each. There's usually at least half an hour to spare at the last pub for more drinking. It's a fun day out whether you're drinking or not. If you are drinking, you can make it a lot easier on yourself by eating at every possible opportunity and by drinking water as the day goes on. Please drink within your limits. Remember that landlords, bouncers and patrons are not going to be too happy with a huge crowd of loud drunkards turning up for quick half. So it's best to try to keep to a reasonable level of sobriety and volume if you want to finish the crawl. If there are is a large group of you, try to split up into smaller groups near the end and go into different pubs if there's more than one available. Most importantly, remember to stay safe while doing the crawl. It's easy to think you're invincible when you've had a bit to drink, so be careful of the Sydney roads and follow the Green Cross Code! (see Page 31) “Stop at the kerb, (Stop at the kerb), Look to the right, (Look to the right), Look to the left, (Look to the left), And look to the right agin. Then when the road is clear of traffic, Walk straight across the road (don’t run) Walk straight across the road”

The Forbes has a long history. It is one of 3 pubs which like to call its self the oldest pub in the city. Built in the Queen Anne Revival period, it was named in honour of one of the leading government officials of the time. Guided by the period and the Anglo-Dutch architecture style of the building, antique fittings were found and combined with rich colours, paint finishes, and woodwork, restoring the interior faithfully to its original splendour. The Forbes has a relaxed and comfortable feel and combines the old with the new, with flair.

The new Harbour View Hotel is on land set aside around 1915 for religious purposes. The owners at the time, brewers Tooth & Company would not move from the area and some arrangements took place between church, brewer and State Government to obtain the site. Architect's drawings dated 1921 exist and construction would have started soon after. Local residents reveal that the main patrons in the early days were bridge construction workers and tunnellers working on the underground railway.
