South St. Paul Seconday, located high on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River, is a public school of just over 1,300 students, grades 6-12. The high school graduated its first class in 1908, and the recently remodeled high school building is a source of pride for citizens of this hardworking community located just across the river from downtown St. Paul. South St. Paul Seconday is proud of the variety of academic and extracurricular activities it provides. In addition to offering the rigorous IB academic program, we offer a general academic program for students who wish to enter college or the work force after graduating from high school. Our students are perennial participants at the state level in speech, debate, music, academic, and sports competitions. Students may also participate in a number of educational options outside of school – vocational programs for juniors and seniors are available at area vo-tech schools, non-traditional learning environment at the Community Learning Center, and post-secondary options for students who choose this path. Moreover, we believe the quality of our teaching and support staff is unequaled in area schools. The caliber of our staff, combined with the rigor of our academic program and the vitality of our extracurricular activities, makes South St. Paul Secondary a school with a future.

THE IB MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAM (MYP)
THE MYP IS FOR EVERYONE
THE PERSONAL PROJECT
The IB Middle Years Program (MYP) is designed for students in grades 6-10. The MYP encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world, preparing them for success in further study and in life.
Although the MYP curriculum is challenging, it is meant for ALL students. Every student in grades 6-10 will participate in the MYP.
At South St. Paul Public Schools, the MYP:
South St. Paul Public School realizes that there are a variety of learners, and it is our goal to teach to each type of learner.
The Personal Project is a key part of the MYP. Students will complete this project during their 10th grade year, and it highlights what students have learned about themselves during their MYP experiences.
• fosters international-mindedness through the IB learner profile • reflects real life through meaningful, in-depth inquiries into local and global issues • prepares students to become life-long learners
THE MYP CURRICULUM The Middle Years Program (MYP) helps students develop both subject-specific and interdisciplinary understanding. The MYP curriculum framework includes: Approaches to Learning (ATL), helping students learn how to learn by developing skills for research, critical and creative thinking, communication, and self-management. Language and Identity, helping students explore intercultural understanding and identity affirmation. Service as Action, providing students with opportunities to take initiative as leaders; and apply academic, personal and social skills to improve the community.
Students follow courses in the eight subject groups of: • Language and Literature (English) • Language Acquisition (Chinese, French or Spanish) • Mathematics • Sciences • Individuals and Societies • Design • Arts • Physical and Health Education
The MYP is focused on implementing the best practices of teaching, and this will help us include all of our learners. Another focus of the MYP is helping students determine how they learn so they can develop study methods that are most effective for them.
The Personal Project can be something the student builds, an activity that the student organizes, or almost anything else the student can think of to demonstrate their skills. Each student will work with a mentor from school who will be available to answer questions and help with time management.
THE IB LEARNER PROFILE The IB Learner Profile is a set of attributes encompassing characteristics IB learners strive to become. The aim is to develop internationallyminded citizens of the world who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world. IB Learners strive to be: Inquirers Knowledgable Thinkers Communicators Principled
Open-minded Caring Risk-takers Balanced Reflective
