Smith County Schools Celebrate National School Lunch Week “Show Your Spirit”

To recognize the National School Lunch Program and the 30 million children it serves every day, Smith County Schools will celebrate National School Lunch Week from October 10-14, 2016. The theme, “Show Your Spirit”, is all about getting parents, students and school officials to show their spirit for school lunch. The program has been serving the nation’s children for over 60 years, and continues to provide students with the fuel they need for learning. School lunches are healthier today than ever with more fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grain choices offered daily. National School Lunch Week will include some of the students’ favorite meals that are offered in Smith County School cafeterias. We will start the week with “Breakfast for Lunch” on Monday which is back by popular demand. An all-time favorite, “Chicken Strips with Baked Potato”, will be served on Tuesday. Since most children enjoy “Hamburgers and French Fries”, Wednesday’s menu should be a crowd pleaser. And what student doesn’t like a “Sack Lunch” that includes a special treat on Thursday – just before we begin our fall break on Friday, October 14! The School Nutrition employees at all Smith County Schools work hard to prepare and serve nutritious meals each day. Between 80% - 90% of Smith County students usually eat school lunches prepared in our cafeterias, but we would be delighted to serve everyone. National School Lunch Week helps us educate parents and students about all the benefits of our lunch program, and the appealing choices we offer. The federally-funded National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides nutritionally balanced, healthy meals to students during each school day. The program requires school meals to meet federal nutrition standards which include offering fruits and vegetables every day, serving whole-grain rich foods, and limiting fat, calories, and sodium. Parents are challenged to encourage children to focus on nutrition and physical activity and to begin a path to healthier lifestyles for the entire family.
