• The writer and composer Thomas Dunhill described Bowen’s chamber music as “an essentially healthy and breezy phase in modern art”. • This is especially true of the 1922 Carnegie Trust Award-winning Second Quartet, and while both quartets are based on clear-cut classical models the Third is more elusive and intimate in feeling, revealing the composer’s rarely displayed private side.

• The composer describes The Cheese Grater as “an adrenaline driven, mean two-step”. • Evocative of a smoky jazz club, Your Touch is the laid-back solo movement from Carter Pann’s GRAMMY®nominated Piano Concerto (Naxos 8559043).

• The First Violin Concerto contains allusions to Alban Berg, its outer movements divided by a virtuoso cadenza for the soloist. • The composer describes his powerful Horn Concerto as “mountains at night… reaching up into the sky and melting into mist and space”, and the Clarinet Concerto as “impressions and recollections in which poetic colors link together and disappear, like an autumnal cloud”.

• His chamber music, however, is no less important, and the three string sonatas on this recording reveal his approachable, idiomatic, and technically eloquent writing for all three instruments.

• The Siete estudios (Seven Studies) are no mere exercises – rather they fuse the color of Iberian music with the rigor of Central European traditions.

• The pensive Melody for strings propelled him to the forefront of Ukrainian music, while the slapstick in his transcription of Paganini’s Caprice No. 19 reveals the composer’s humorous side.

• Les Saisons is an evocative portrait of the seasons and can be seen as a forerunner of the impressionistic writing that would soon appear in French music.

• These live recordings were made at Myroslav Skoryk’s 75th anniversary concerts in Odessa.

• As the title suggests, New Friends / Old Friends is a reflective and thoughtful survey of musical styles (both classical and contemporary) that have enriched Deon Nielsen Price’s composing and performing career – both currently (New Friends) and in the past (Old Friends). • In May 2013, Price was commissioned by Park City (Utah) Dance to compose the music for a ballet based on the French-folktale Toads and Diamonds. • The music, consisting of fifteen different tableaus, is inspired by a well-known French folk song and by various musical styles – from classical Viennese and late 19th century salon to contemporary – to represent the story’s characters and dances. • Women in Christ’s Line, a three movement piano work composed in 2004, contains innovative piano techniques, including arm clusters, crossed hands, and independence of keys in each hand. • Several works by the Great Masters have become Deon Price’s “Old Friends” which she has literally played in concerts globally. • Among these are Debussy’s Clair de lune and Feux d’artifice, and several Chopin works including Fantaise impromptu, Op. 66; Revolutionary Étude in C Minor, Op. 10/12; Cello Étude in C-Sharp Minor Op. 25/7; and the Black Key Étude in G-Flat Major, Op. 10/5.

• The recordings made by Václav Neumann, the charismatic music director of the Czech Philharmonic from 1968, form one of the cornerstones of the symphonic repertoire in Supraphon’s archive. • The majority of listeners, however, will not be familiar with the albums dating from the prior 1953-68 period. • Neumann already enjoyed international renown by the time he became head of the Czech Philharmonic. • Under his baton, the splendid Prague Symphony Orchestra made the very oldest recordings of Dvorák’s early symphonies (Nos. 1, 2 and 4), a recording of Trojan’s orchestrated version of Tchaikovsky’s The Seasons, while the Czech Philharmonic recorded Mahler’s enchanting song cycles and major international and Czech modern works – by Messiaen (with the composer’s wife Yvonne Loriod at the piano), Borkovec and Sommer. • This set symbolically closes with Dvorák’s Nocturne, recorded by Neumann with the Czech Philharmonic in 1968, mere weeks after the invasion of Czechoslovakia by forces of the Warsaw Pact. • A number of these unique and sensitively remastered recordings are being released on CD for the very first time.

• Such attributes as charismatic, singular, exceptional are somewhat overused today. Yet in the case of Ida Haendel they are justified. Born in 1928 into a Polish Jewish family, she was a child prodigy, playing Beethoven’s violin concerto at the age of five...and leading master classes in London at the age of 85. • After her Prague debut in 1957, she returned to the city throughout the 1960s, either to give concerts (most frequently with the Czech Philharmonic conducted by Karel Ancerl, and exclusively accompanied by the pianist Alfréd Holecek at chamber recitals) or to work in the studio. • This 5-CD box features the complete live and studio recordings Ida Haendel made in Prague from 1957-65 and deposited in the Supraphon and Czech Radio archives, with a number of them being released for the first time. • Alongside “virtuoso pieces” and sonatas, the CDs include concertos by Beethoven, Stravinsky, Wieniawski, as well as her “flagship” Sibelius. • Ida Haendel radiates an elemental, ecstatic musicality, one peculiar to Gypsy virtuosos, here refined into a perfectly cultivated form.

leading 20th c. Slovak composers, credited with no fewer than nine operas.

• This disc features several first recordings of his piano music, of which little is known even in his native Slovakia. • The music sits downstream from Szymanowski and Janácek, like them blending folk influences with French impressionism echoes.

• His two cello and piano works, recorded here in the first of a series of Stöhr CDs, reveal a lyrical and expressive composer downstream from Brahms and Schumann.

• As also with Szymanowski, some of the pieces evoke the composer’s fondness for the Tatras, the mountainous borderland between Poland and Slovakia.

• The disc continues Toccata’s rediscovery of composers who suffered under the Third Reich.
