Dear Open School Community There is an ebb and flow that occurs over the course and the school year and the final few weeks are certainly a time of flow. Over the past several weeks the school has been a buzz of activity. From the Film Festival to the Instrumental Music Concert and all manner of expressions of learning that embodied continued discovery of the Joy of Learning. As the world is our classroom, hundreds of our students from 3rd through 12th grade have travelled in our own backyard of Estes Park to faraway places like Germany and France with numerous destinations everywhere in between. The final few days of the year are filled with celebrations of learning that hone the rites of passages at each transition point throughout the K-12 continuum. Portfolio sharings, Voyage Presentations, Presentations of Learning (POL), Demonstrations of Readiness (DOR), and Final Support meetings serve to honor the whole child in meaningful ways. I personally want to thank every parent for sharing their student with us and helping support their success, we couldn’t do it without you. I also, want to thank the staff for their tireless efforts on behalf of our students. Finally, thank you to all the students! Each of you are brilliant people who make the Open School a magical place. Thank you for all your hard work this year. I am honored to serve as your principal and I wish everyone the best for an exciting and rejuvenating summer. Thanks, Scott Bain, Principal

Thank You We’d like to thank Rosie and all who helped out with the End of Year All School Picnic. What a beautiful day it was!

And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer. -F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

Garden Volunteers Needed for Summer We will be holding a short meeting on Thursday, May 25th at 1:30 PM in the school garden to go over the duties of the summer volunteers. Volunteers are an important part of keeping our garden successful while school is out. If you would like to donate an hour once or twice over the summer, please join us on the last day of school or contact Joy Sousa ([email protected])

The JCOS Youth Farmers Market The JCOS YFM will be selling our garden-grown vegetables this summer at the Mint and Serif Coffee House! Dates have yet to be determined but will most likely begin in mid to late July. Mint and Serif Coffee House is owned by the Hendrix family - JCOS community members - and is located just east of Simms St and Colfax Ave, (11500 W Colfax Ave, Lakewood, CO 80215) in Lakewood. For more information about the market stand or if you would like to volunteer to help on market days please contact Jen Caballero at 720-207-4457/[email protected].

Fall Ball – Silent Auction Event SAVE THE DATE! We are in the midst of planning our first Fall Ball - Silent Auction Event to be held at Clements Community Center in Lakewood, CO on Friday, October 27th, 2017. This will be a Halloween social event for parents and staff. Dress up is encouraged! After receiving input from administration regarding the needs of our school, we decided all profits from this event will help grow and maintain our Enrichment Programs at JCOS. Our goal is to raise $5,000. I know several schools that raise upwards of $50,000 every year! THIS IS POSSIBLE. Our monetary success will be contingent upon the success of our silent auction. Research shows the more quality items that we have, the more successful our auction will be. THIS IS HOW YOU CAN HELP! We need all artists, business owners, and crafts people to donate, and we need all parents to take a stack of solicitation letters and visit your favorite businesses! People are usually more than willing to donate. We just have to get the word out! Please contact Janna Burnham or Aly Warren to submit pledges from your business or services, and to get solicitation letters. And mark your calendar. It will be a screaming good time. You don't have to bid on item/s, you just have to have fun! Thank you in advance for your help in this effort! [email protected] or call Janna at 678.372.8633

Global Awareness: Ultimate Peace One of our students, Mickey Walsh, is working on his Global Awareness Passage and is fundraising money for Ultimate Peace. Cultural and physical walls separate Arab, Israeli, and Palestinian youth, but Ultimate Peace uses the natural tenets of the spirit of the game of Ultimate, which can begin to break down these walls. Mickey has been accepted to serve as a Leader in Training this summer to help model skills and spirt at camp Ultimate Peace in Israel this summer. In order to try and help Create the World that Ought to Be, he has to do a tremendous amount of fundraising and is hoping that you will help support him in his journey while kicking off the summer in style. On May 30th, at City o' City, a restaurant in Denver run by an Open School parent, there will be a day where the proceeds from meals purchased will be donated to Ultimate Peace and their mission. So come on down, and kick off the summer all for a good cause! City o’ City – 206 E 13th Ave, Denver, CO 80203 Hours 7:00 AM – 2:00 AM
