Calaveras Big Trees State Park Receives Sierra Nevada Conservancy Prop. 1 Grant ARNOLD, Calif. — The Sierra Nevada Conservancy, a state agency, awarded a $500,000 Proposition 1 Water Bond grant to fund the “Big Tree Creek Watershed Forest Restoration” project located at Calaveras Big Trees State Park. The 235-acre project is part of California State Parks’ mission to protect Calaveras Big Trees State Park’s most valued natural resources, a vital watershed and giant sequoias. The project will connect previous and current forest restoration projects resulting in the treatment of approximately 500 acres within the North Grove area. The restoration work will improve the health of the Big Tree Creek Watershed which provides quality water for communities downstream and is very important for the health and longevity of the North Grove’s giant sequoias. The project will create a forest that is resilient to catastrophic wildland fire and provide further wildland fire protection to the local communities of Arnold and Big Tree Village. “We are extremely grateful to have the Sierra Nevada Conservancy’s continued support in our efforts to restore and protect the state’s valued watersheds and forests,” said California State Park’s Central Valley District Senior Environmental Scientist Heather Reith. A detailed description of the project is available at the Sierra Nevada Conservancy website. # # # About the Sierra Nevada Conservancy The Sierra Nevada Conservancy (SNC) is a state agency whose mission is to improve the environmental, economic, and social well-being of the Sierra Nevada Region.
