ACTION LIST Can you attend our Internet Safety Presentation, 7 July, 6:30pm, in the library? Have you checked our calendar? There are lots of things coming up before the end of this term. Kia ora koutou On Tuesday I celebrated a very warm and funny 60th birthday at school. I believe I received good wishes from every child in the school at least twice over. My office was transformed into disco palace full of balloons that our juniors just couldn’t resist, so I had visits all day. There was a lovely warm feeling to the day that I really appreciated. (For your information life on the other side of 60 looks quite bright.) My birthday falls on 21 June, which coincides with the winter solstice, the shortest day and longest night of the year. What I take from that is the positive news that the days will now get progressively longer and the nights shorter. The winter solstice also falls in the period of Matariki. The start of Matariki is marked by the rise of the Matariki constellation, or Pleiades, in the North Eastern sky. (This group of stars is also significant in Japan where it is called Subaru.) Matariki is also referred to as the Maori New Year. The rise of Matariki was an important marker in the Maori calendar indicating in some regions that it was time to prepare the ground for planting. At Thorndon we have celebrated Matariki in different ways over recent years. This year we are holding a special assembly on Friday the 1st of July. Each syndicate in the school will be presenting an item. Parents and other whanau are welcome to attend. The assembly will run from 1:45 to 3:00pm. Maori Language Week also falls in the Matariki period. For the first time the Maori Language Commission are organising a parade to highlight the week. Thorndon School will be participating in the parade (hikoi). The parade will travel from Parliament to Te Papa. This is quite a long way for our junior students so they will just walk down to Parliament to see us off. We will leave the school at 10:30. Parents and whanau are welcome to join us.

THORNDON SCHOOL NEWSLETTER During the Matariki period we are also thinking of the well-being of others. We are operating a Food Bank collection in the foyer of our office. Please feel free to drop off a can of food or a box of cereal to help support those who are struggling to feed their families through these gruelling winter months. Nga mihi Alistair du Chatenier

Online Safety Presentation, Andrew Cowie: 7 July, 6:30pm, library. I am pleased to be able to announce that we have been able to reschedule Andrew Cowie’s presentation. We are flying Andrew down from Auckland for the evening of 7 July. Jessie Gregory attended a presentation by Andrew Cowie at the Ulearn Conference last year and was very impressed. Every child who uses the internet will experience opportunities, but also risks. Parents are often unprepared for secretiveness and sophistication of what their children get involved with online. Andrew’s presentation will cover:  Different paths children can take on the internet – dangerous or learning enhancing?  What you can expect your child to be looking at / doing online?  How better understand what they are doing on the internet and to keep them safe.

The presentation will target the needs of the Year 5 – 8, but will be very useful to the parents of younger children, giving them a sense of what might lie ahead.

THORNDON SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Māori Language Week Parade This year we will be participating in the country's first ever Māori language week parade being held on Monday 4th July. The total distance of the parade route is 1.4km and we estimate it will take one hour maximum for the parade to reach Te Papa. We feel that this is a really important event to be a part of. We will walk from school to the meeting point at 10.30am. The junior classes (Rooms 8, 9 and 12) will then walk back to school when the parade starts. The rest of the school will carry on to Te Papa. Māori Language Week TShirts Te Taura whiri i te reo Māori (Māori Language Commission) have designed a tshirt logo for this year's theme ākina to reo – behind you all the way which is about using te reo Māori to support people, to inspire and to cheer on. We would like to offer you the opportunity to purchase one of these tshirts for your child to wear on the day of the parade. Please email [email protected] if you are interested either for yourself or your child/children. Once I have the numbers I will be able to indicate how much each tshirt will cost.

Tree Planting at Trelissick Park The Enviro team got to go on a trip on Friday 2nd of June. We caught a mini bus to Trelissick Park and we met our guide Oliver. He took us down the track to the river all the way down. This man taught us how to plant one type of grass. We went in pairs and started the planting. In total we planted 100 plants. HOW TO PLANT A PLANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!     

Firstly you dig a hole. You roll the grass with your feet and squash it (only a little bit ). Next you pull the plastic bag and spread out the roots. Afterwards you put the plant in the hole and cover it up. Next you trample around the grass so the soil covers all around it (trample around, not on top).

Next we went to this empty space with plants in plastic bags and we started digging holes to plant those plants. It was hard to dig the holes because the ground was mainly rocks but the Enviro team managed to plant all 100 plants! Later the Enviro team had refreshments and went back on another mini bus. The Enviro team arrived back to school at 11:30 pm and continued on the rest of the day like nothing happened (almost).

THORNDON SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Tournament of Minds Tournament of Minds is a competition where there are teams of 5-7 people. You can do more or less but you can only win things with 5-7 people. Last year Thorndon School entered a team of 7 people. This year Briar is still considering how to make teams. At the final event we will undertake a spontaneous challenge. None of the teams will know what the challenge is prior to them undertaking it. It is a short challenge, and the team will have to work together for success. They will be judged on how well they worked together as a team, their originality and various other aspects. Last weekend Miss Parker took a group of students: Taesoo Kim, Henry Guy, Sam Falloon, Evie Malyon, and Rose Wilding to a Tournaments of Mind workshop. First there were pelmanisms that we had to solve (word puzzles). Then there were various other challenges like making hats, role plays and describing what is happening in pictures. It was lots of fun and made us think hard. Taesoo Kim and Sam Richell Smith

KiVa Up-Date Kereru Syndicate have begun our KiVa lessons enthusiastically and have lots of ideas to contribute. In Tarata our first lessons have been about being safe in our school environment. Children have volunteered ideas about what they need to do to be both physically and emotionally safe. We have looked at feelings and what sort of school environment makes us feel happy and secure.
