Assistant Principal: Mrs. Marise Shumpert 2016-2017 Edition Nine: December 20, 2016
FROM THE DESK OF THE PRINCIPAL B-C # 1, We have successfully made it to our Winter break. We have seen big growth in our students with their school work and with their maturity. We want this to continue. Parents, we have appreciated your support in all of our PTO fundraisers, Choir Performances, Curriculum Night, and so much more. Our community partners have been the best. Without our community partners our jobs of teaching children would be much harder. As we take our break, we want all students to continue to read, and to keep learning first. Please be safe in all of your travels, and we will see you on January 4, 2017.

FUN HOLIDAY FAMILY LITERACY ACTIVITIES While children may want to take a vacation from learning on winter break, parents can find ways to sneak in activities that use writing and reading to help kids develop their abilities. In addition, this helps children to see that literacy skills are fun, useful parts of everyday life and not just something done within the classroom walls.
Sincerely, Your BC No. 1 PTO
1. Have kids help with cooking While they might be too small (or untrustworthy) to cook complete dishes, kids can participate by reading recipes to parents, measuring out ingredients, helping with food preparation and, of course, eating the meal together. 2. Read a book and watch a movie Read a holiday book that is a favorite with your family and then watch the movie. You can discuss the ways the two are alike and different, which will help kids’ critical thinking skills.
Be on the lookout for
Box Tops
over Winter Break!
3. Spread the thanks Help children learn gratitude and hone their writing skills by having them hand-write thank you cards to those who gave them gifts. To make it fun, provide stationery kids can customize with stickers, stamps or drawings in addition to text. 4. Sing holiday songs together Rhymes within songs help develop children’s awareness of phonemes, which assists with reading and writing development. Plus, singing is fun!
I cannot believe that it is almost Winter break! It seems like the first semester has just flown by! First, I want to take the time to thank you for all of your efforts in supporting your students throughout the first half of the school year! I am also proud of our teachers here at B-C Grammar #1! With their support we were able to sponsor over 30 students/ families in need for the holidays! Although this time of year can be filled with many fun events, it can also be stressful and it’s even more important to practice good self-care. The following ten tips may help you manage your stress during this busy season: 1. Exercise everyday 2. Get enough sleep 3. Eat healthy foods 4. Talk about your problems
5. Write a letter to Santa (or another gift provider) Instead of simply creating a wish list, have children write a complete letter to Santa explaining what they want for Christmas. You can also have kids evaluate why they’ve been good throughout the year in order to encourage some good behavior. 6. Memorize holiday songs, stories, or poems Have each child choose a story, poem or song to memorize and present to the family during a holiday dinner. This allows kids to engage in the genre of their choice and work on learning and memorizing something new. 7. Plan trips together Kids love to look at maps in order to understand where they’ve been and where they are going. If you’re traveling over the holidays, have children help with planning the trip, reading directions, or choosing activities along the way. This can help kids become engaged in the travel process and understand how to effectively get from point A to point B.
5. Keep a journal 6. Break large tasks into small steps 7. Practice taking slow, deep breaths

8. Avoid negative people 9. Don’t over commit 10. Think happy thoughts In light of the Thanksgiving and upcoming Christmas holidays, I just want to say how thankful I am for each and every one of your children. They truly remind me every day of why I absolutely love my role as a school counselor.
LOST AND FOUND Has your child misplaced his/her jacket, sweater, lunchbox, or other items? BC #1 has a Lost and Found area located in the cafeteria by the stage. Please stop by and look through the lost items found around the school. Unclaimed items will be donated after the winter break.
