The Vice-Chancellor Greetings on behalf of the NLUO family! Since its establishment in the year 2009, National Law University Odisha has immerged as a leading centre of legal education. The fourth batch of students of this University has time and again made us proud with their achievements and contributions. They have been active participants in every field starting from academic to clinical legal education. The university recognizes the importance of all round development of students by giving them the requisite exposure. This batch has succeeded in availing the opportunities with a positive outlook. They have shown immense hard work and sincerity towards mooting, debating, publications, seminars, conferences, clinical legal education and legal aid. This has set a benchmark for the upcoming batches to pursue the same with more determination and enthusiasm. Also, the students have had the privilege of interacting and working with distinguished judges, practicing advocates, leading firms and corporate houses enriching their practical experience. It has been a delight to see them bag such achievements in addition to academic excellence. The Registrar Greetings! NLUO, a premier national law university, with its committed staff and students, aims to impart quality legal education. In the last few years, the university has witnessed remarkable development with respect to its infrastructure, teaching, research and institution building. We have had the privilege of working with the United Nations Development Programme for “Access to Justice” through centers in the areas of juvenile justice, consumer protection, women rights and various others. The university is also encouraging research through various research centers in the field of IPR, corporate law, public international law, trade and investment law, banking and insurance law and various others. Our university also offers financial assistance in various forms such as means-cum-merit scholarship as well as funding for moot court, debate, sports and several co-curricular and extracurricular activities. I wish this batch all the best in their careers and strongly believe that they will prove, undoubtedly, in due time their worth and mettle in their selection. One of the youngest and most zealous institutes imparting premium legal education in India, National Law University Odisha was founded in the year 2009 by Act 4 of 2008 of the State of Odisha. With its vision of creating deft professionals who are socially responsive and adaptable to the dynamic field of law, the University has already made a mark amidst the legal fraternity in the country. The research standard of the students is a perfect blend of theoretical and practical nuances. The University eagerly promotes Mooting culture where the students have managed to carve a niche for themselves. About

Batch of 2017 The Class of 2017 has left its mark on the society, as a batch it has taken several initiatives to give back to the community, while exhibiting scholastic brilliance. The batch has created a place for itself in an array of established law school by bringing laurels to the University in Moot Court Competitions, Publications, Mediation Competitions, Model United Nations, Client Counseling Competitions, Parliamentary Debates, Sporting and Cultural Activities.

Initiatives of the Batch of 2017 –– Financial Inclusion Society is a social initiative taken by a group of students with agenda to create financial literacy through awareness camps and to identify beneficiaries and enroll them in relevant social security schemes. –– Advokato is a web portal designed on the idea to broaden and improve civil legal assistance through an integrated system that brings the knowledge and wisdom of legal experts and best minds in technology to the public through computers and mobile devices. The key to this portal will be the integrated system of resources,

rules, and recommendations through which users can be matched with available services. –– Legal Aid: The batch has been extensively involved in legal aid activities of the University and has provided its able assistance to the underprivileged be it immigrant labourers, prisoner, juveniles etc. Students have organized legal literacy camps, prepared field reports and drafted PILs to bring justice to the underprivileged. –– Zenith was started in Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh in December

2013 to facilitate learning and provide career opportunities to the privileged, yet deprived and the underprivileged students in the district. With the motto “Feel the change” this initiative has garnered a lot of support and has set up library-cum-counseling centres in different blocks of the state of Madhya Pradesh. Currently, there are two working libraries and the objective is to empower the students by education and learning so that they act as agents of change as opposed to objects of charity.

Life NLUO has a thriving residential campus of about 70 acres situated right between two rivers making it one of the most picturesque campuses across India. This setting provides the perfect impetus to the NLUO community to indulge in a wide array of activities, ranging from academic and co-curricular pursuits to societal welfare schemes. The formative years of the University have also given this Batch an opportunity to take new initiatives and establish a culture that will become the hallmark of NLUO in the coming years.

Publications

NLUO, right from its inception, has focused on the critical evaluation of existing notions of society on a wide array of issues ranging from complexities in the International sphere in WTO to the dismal living conditions of riverside settlers in Cuttack. In order to channelize the efforts and research activities undertaken, NLUO has housed a number of research centers, a majority of which are funded by the United Nations Development Project (UNDP) Access to Justice Project. Some of these centers are the Centre for Banking & Insurance Laws, Centre for Corporate & Commercial Laws, Intellectual Property Analysis and Advocacy Centre and Centre for Outreach & Research in Agricultural Law.

Centres and their work apart, NLUO has actively fostered a culture of curiosity and emphasized on generating significant levels of research outputs. Several academic journals and publications, backed and nurtured by the finest legal minds of India, and a result of the dedication and perseverance of the students of NLUO have come to be published in the recent past. Some of these are the NLUO Law Journal, Journal of Banking and Insurance Laws, Colloquium Opus Law Journal & NLUO Student Law Review.

Mooting

Culture NLUO has been able to achieve remarkably high level of consistency in its moot court performances. This has been possible only through the hard work of students

The Moot Society (TMS) of NLUO is managed by the students under the guidance of a faculty advisor. It enjoys the mandate to coordinate all aspects of the University’s involvement with Mooting. TMS has taken huge strides in providing impetus for the development of mooting culture in the University by organization of intra-college and inter college Moot Court Competitions. NLUO has had the privilege of hosting India (South) rounds of the prestigious Stetson Environmental Law Moot Court Competition for two consecutive years. In the year 2014, NLUO came up with its flagship moot event, The NLUO Maritime Law Moot Court Competition

in conjunction with the Paradip Port Trust. The Moot was host to more than 20 teams across the country and was a huge success. In addition, the Intra-University Moot Court Competition (IUMCC) is organized every year by the TMS for the purposes of inculcating a culture of mooting among students. NLUO has been able to achieve remarkably high level of consistency in its moot court performances. This has been possible only through the hard work of students, TMS and NLUO’s policy of extending financial assistance to students for participating in national and international moot court competitions.
