I would like to thank all LHS staff, students and parents for a successful opening in September. It is hard to believe we are into November already. I am delighted to see the enthusiasm of everyone involved with the school. We have been quite busy in September/October with many student council and athletic events beginning and completing. Thank you to all students, staff, parents, and community volunteers for your dedication on behalf of LHS. Also many thanks go out to our Student Council Co-Presidents; Chloe Dean Moore and Bronwyn Heighton and all members of council for their leadership as well as to Mr. Goora for his support and guidance. Thank you.

Placement is a worldwide accepted program that challenges students to a high level of learning. Students completing AP courses will be well prepared to enter any university field of study. The school information system, Power-School is up and running. Through this program, parents / guardians can gain access to their child’s attendance, behaviour and academics. If you do not have your access information please call the school at 860-6000. Our School Alert messenger system has been sending home messages regarding student attendance. If you are not receiving these calls please phone the school as soon as possible.

Over the last month many routines continue at LHS. We have held three fire drill evacuations, completed a Hold and Secure drill and a Lockdown practise as well. Please take some time to review expectations of fire drills and evacuations with your child. As well please refer to the student handbook online for further information.

Report Cards will be sent home on Thursday, November 17th. Parent-teacher interviews will be held on, Wednesday, November 23rd from 6:30 – 8:30pm and Thursday November 24th at 1:30 3:30pm. Thursday, November 24th will be a half day professional Development day for staff and parent-teacher in the afternoon. There is no school for students on November 24th.

This year we continue to work on our School Student Success Plan goals (SSP). This is our 4th year of implementation. Teachers are collaborating regularly to provide consistency in approaches and improved classroom practises to support student achievement. Please note that the school Report to the Community will be posted online in November. The report indicates data on our Grade 10 Provincial exams and our updated Student Success Plan. Please take some time to read the report. The data is again very positive and affirms our work in improving student achievement at Lockview High School.

Our school website has been running successfully. We have made some more adjustments to the site hopefully allowing for ease of use for our community. November is an excellent time to affirm your child’s hard work over the first two months. It is also a time to reflect, improve, communicate with and partner with your son/daughter’s teachers to support your child’s learning.

If you have any concerns regarding your child’s progress at LHS please feel free to contact the school and speak with one of your son/daughter’s This year we are offering AP Calculus 12 and AP teachers and/or administration. English 12 to our students. Over the next three Yours in Education years we would like to continue to expand on a number of other AP courses. Advanced Bernie MacEachern

Lockview High School’s annual Remembrance Day ceremonies took place on Thursday, November 10, 2016. Students from all grade levels take pride in participating in this event by playing and singing music, and cadets participating in the Color Party and the Honour Guard ceremony and students setting the stage with lighting and sound. Our special guest speaker this year was former MLA and a champion of Veterans, Mr. Peter Stoffer. Dignitaries from the Halifax Regional School Board, the Waverley Legion, the School Advisory Council and local politicians were also welcomed through invitation, as well as parents and community members. A special thank you goes out to Mrs. Dina Burtt, Music Director , Mr. Paul Stacey, and Mr. Paul Boudreau, who have been working hard with their students for the past month getting ready for these ceremonies.

With mid-term grades upon us, our Science teachers would like to remind you of the importance of study and work outside of class. Homework can serve a variety of purposes - review, practice, reflection, exposure to new ideas, etc. But the key is consistency in spending some time to review, practice, and digest material. There is an expectation that students should regularly engage in these practices and complete homework on a consistent basis. As parents, you can help us by providing a quiet place free from distraction, and by creating a daily expectation of having your son or daughter review the material taught in class that day. Some extension and enrichment opportunities: On Saturday, November 26, Dalhousie University is hosting a day long event titled "GoEngGirl 2016: An Introduction to Engineering". It is a day-long retreat for female high school students in grades 9-12 and their parents to learn about engineering as a profession. The day's activities will include: meet and greet games, a hands on introduction to the various engineering disciplines and a design competition (including prizes!). This is a no cost event, that also includes lunch. The event has been publicized to LHS students, and a few have registered, but spaces are still available if you have a daughter interested in pursuing Engineering after high school. You can find more information at https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/go-eng-girl-2016-tickets-19117241183 Shad Valley is also currently accepting applications for its summer STEAM programs (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math). This is a month-long, in-residence program at one of a number of Canadian host universities. In the Maritimes, this includes both Dalhousie and UNB. It is an intensive program of lectures, workshops, projects, and activities designed to expose highly motivated students to myriad ideas and possibilities. Each session is based around a problem of national significance, and enlists students to work together and devise bold solutions to complex issues. Admission to the program is highly competitive. A couple of Lockview students have attended Shad Valley in the past and thoroughly enjoyed their experience. Deadline for applications is November 28. Science is fun. Science is curiosity. We all have natural curiosity. Science is a process of investigating. It's posing questions and coming up with a method. It's delving in. On November 8, Lockview High School hosted the AARAO Post-Secondary Schools Tour. Representatives from over 40 universities and colleges were available to speak with and provide information to grade 12 students. This was an excellent opportunity for students to have some of their questions answered as they make decisions about where and what they will study following graduation. Many of the schools have upcoming Open House sessions. Please check the calendar of events on the Student Services tab of the Lockview website for dates and times.

LOCKVIEW HIGH’S FIRST CAREER FAIR Lockview High School will be hosting our first Career Fair on Tuesday, November 29th. The school’s Comprehensive Guidance Program Needs Assessment, conducted in 2014-2015, showed that the school community wished to have more exposure to career development opportunities. When our current Grade 11 and Grade 12 students were surveyed last spring, over 87% of students surveyed wanted to participate in a Career Fair at Lockview. As well, career interests were surveyed so that the event could be as meaningful as possible to our students through the invitation of presenters from students’ top career choices. The Career Fair will be held during the afternoon of Tuesday, Nov. 29th from 12:40 to 3:25 pm. There will be four sessions for students to attend over the afternoon. Mr. Blakeney will be visiting Grade 11 and Grade 12 classes to have students complete a registration form. Students and parents are kindly reminded that attendance will be taken in each session. For examination exemptions, the attendance for the career sessions will be handled in the same manner as attendance for individual classes. We are looking forward to hosting this exciting event!

ATTENTION GRADE 11 STUDENTS Are you a student in Grade 11? Do you believe your future includes a post-secondary program offered by the Nova Scotia Community College? If so, you will need to apply while you are in grade 11. The programs offered by NSCC are in demand and a number of programs are waitlisted. Students are encouraged to apply online through the applications link of the website of the Nova Scotia Community College.

Fine Arts Department This year the Fine Arts department is offering many different courses. Here are a few: Art, Film and Video, Phys ‘Ed, Construction and Production Technology, Yoga, Drama and Fitness Leadership just to name a few. Please encourage your child to get involved in the different fine arts courses we offer. If you think your child is interested in one of these courses for the next school year, make sure to get the information from the teacher or Student Services. Special thanks to everyone in the Fine Arts department for all their hard work in extra curriculars, extra help and all the extra things you do to make the school a better place. Phys. Ed The Lockview boys golf team captured the NSSAF Championship at the Antigonish Golf Club. Shaun Margeson led the way as he captured the individual title with a "69". Ben Chasse finished 3rd overall, while Ryan O'Hearn and Ewan Kelly also had solid rounds to help win the team competition by nineteen strokes. The boys also captured the Capital Region Banner earlier in the season at Grandview Golf Club. Congratulations to the Lockview Flag Football team as they captured the school's first Mariner Zone banner last week at the BMO Center. Congratulations to Lockview Baseball, Boys and Girls Soccer, Cross Country, and Football as all of these teams had solid seasons this fall. Emily Connors also qualified for the girls provincials with a strong showing at the Capital Region tournament.

Our students continue to engage in daily reading; independent reading is a great way for students to develop their reading skills, and to discover the books with which they connect. Ask your student what they are reading in English class. Many teachers in the English Department are using Google classroom to support student learners. We encourage parents to ask their students to show them how Google Apps for Education, including Google Classroom allows them to submit work, to revise and to seek feedback in meaningful ways. Did you know? Healthy Living 9 is taught in conjunction with English 9. Although it is scheduled once per week, teachers may choose to bundle days together so that students can work for several days on a unit or topic, ensuring continuity of the conversations.

A huge congratulations goes out to all senior band students who performed in our two Remembrance Day ceremonies last Thursday. Our students performed marches, hymn tunes, O Canada, selections from WW1 and 2 and did a fantastic job. We had 4 soloists perform songs on stage and sang so well. Volare our choir sang during the laying of the wreaths and sounded beautiful. Members of the staff and community expressed their appreciation to the band students for their preparation and performances. Our next performance is Dec.1, 2016 at 7:00 in the cafetorium and will feature all of our small ensembles, jazz band, grade 10 band and senior band. Music students at Lockview are involved in a special project involving creativity and improvisation. Students have been working with a poem written by spoken word artist Shautay Grant. They have been writing music to accompany the text. Dinuk and Dominic Des will be working with our students next week. Shauntay Grant will be performing her work with our ideas in March 2017. Grade 9 band students are always welcome to play in our ensembles - please see Mrs.Burtt for more information National Youth Band auditions are by November 27th. Mr. MacEachern's Global Politics class had a visit from the area's MP Darrell Samson in November. They were also interviewed by CBC's Colleen Jones about the US Presidential election. Next month, they will participate in Lockview's second annual Model Parliament.

With the International DELF exams written in grade 12 for all interested French Immersion students, we continue to stress the importance of speaking French at all times when in the POD. We also encourage students in all grade levels to try and listen to French Radio or TV from time to time so that they increase their exposure to many different accents and dialects. Vive le Francais!!!

It is hard to imagine we are a full quarter of the way through the school year. All math students are welcome to stop into the peer support room any day at lunch for extra help. It is underutilized at the present time. The student volunteers would help give some of their peers the clarity they need to boost achievement in any math course. Ms. Veniott has been filling in admirably for Mr. Rankin. Her knowledge of the subject matter and calm nature have allowed the students to continue working towards meeting the outcomes. We also would like to thank Ms Luttrell for helping fill in for Mrs Levo-Harrop. She has become a very familiar face in the building. We appreciate her efforts in helping each time she comes in. Her smile and pleasant nature are always welcome at LHS.
