Ch 3, sl st to 1st ch to form ring. Ch 2; 11 dc in the center of the ring; sl st in top of beginning ch 2. Ch 2; 1 dc in same st; 2 dc in each st around; sl st in top of beginning ch 2.
Ch 2; 2 dc in next st; *1 dc in next st; 2 dc in next st*; repeat around and sl st in top of beginning ch 2.

Using black yarn; ch 3; sl st to form ring; ch 2; 11 dc in ring; sl st to top of beginning ch 2; fasten off and weave in end. Pull beginning yarn tail until space in center closes tightly. Join white; ch 2; dc in same sp; 2 dc in each st around; sl st in top of beginning ch 2.
Ch 1; sc in same st; *2 sc in next st; 1 sc in next st*; repeat around; sl st to top of 1 st sc; fasten off and weave in end.
Join purple; ch 2; *dc in each of next 2 st; 2 dc in next st*; repeat around; fasten off and weave in ends on one eye. On the other eye, leave a 6 inch yarn tail to connect one side of the two eyes together.
Place right sides together and sew through both thicknesses (7 stitches). Fasten off and weave in end. Join green; ch 1; sc in same st; sc in each st until 1st “valley”; sc3tog at valley; continue sc-ing around until next valley; repeat sc3tog; continue sc-ing around until reaching the beginning sc; sl st in 1st sc; fasten off and weave in end. Row 1:
Using black yarn, ch 6; dc in 3rd ch from hook and in next 4 ch; turn.
Row 3:
Ch 2; dc3tog; fasten off, leaving a 6 inch yarn tail for sewing onto the eye piece. Weave in beginning yarn tail. Using loose yarn tail, sew between owl eyes using yarn needle.
Row 2:
Ch 2; dc2tog; dc in next st; dc2tog; turn.
BREAST FEATHERS
Foundation: Row 1:

Using green yarn, ch 21. (For 3-6 Month size, ch 27.)
Dc in 3rd ch from hook, ch 1, 2 dc in same st; *skip 2 ch; sc in next st; skip 2 ch; 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc (all in same ch) (referred to as “scale stitch” ongoing)*; repeat to end, fasten off and weave in end. Do not turn. Each row begins on the same side.

Join purple at the base of the 1 st scale stitch; *scale stitch in next st (sc from previous row); sc at base of next scale stitch*; repeat across; fasten off and weave in end. For photo tutorials, see below:
Hook placement for joining purple at base of 1st scale stitch: Turn so that the base of the foundation row is facing upward and the curved scallops of the scale stitches are facing downward. Insert hook through the loop through which the first scale stitch was made and create your first sc. Then turn your work so that the foundation row is on the bottom once again.

Hook Placement for the Next Single Crochet in the Base of the Next Scale Stitch Insert hook from back to front through the ch 1 space between the two dcs. Then angle hook downward and insert into same stitch from where that scale stitch was made.

(If making 3-6 month size, add another color series of purple, grey, pink, yellow, grey and green.) Using purple yarn and yarn needle, sew breast feathers piece onto owl body with owl wings overlapping to give the appearance of being folded over the breast feathers.

Ch 54; sl st to beginning ch; ch 2, dc in each st around, sl st to beginning ch 2. (If making 3-6 month size, ch 60.) Ch 2, 4 dc in same st (1st shell formed); skip 2 st; *sc in next ch; skip 2 ch; 5 dc in next st; skip 2 ch*; repeat around; sl st to top of beginning ch 2.
Sl st to middle st in shell; ch 1, sc in same st; *5 dc in next st (sc from previous row); sc in middle of shell*; repeat around, sl st to 1`st sc. Ch 2; 4 dc in same st; *sc in middle of shell; 5 dc in next st (sc from previous row)*; repeat around, sl st to top of beginning ch 2.
Rows 4-7:
Repeat Rows 2-3 twice.
Row 9:

Press two sides together and sc them together, working through both thicknesses and through both loops on both sides; fasten off and weave in end. Turn hat right side out, leaving the rough seam on the interior.
Join purple yarn at the base of the foundation row at one side of the hat; ch 5; hdc in 3 rd st from hook and in next 3 st. Turn slightly in order to work in the foundation row; sl st in each of next 3 stitches. Turn back to work up the ribbing; 1 hdc in each back loop of 4 stitches; turn.

Step 4: Step 5: Bow:
Ch 2; (working down the ribbing); hdc in each back loop of 3 st; turn.
Repeat steps 2-4 around until reaching the beginning of the ribbing. Fasten off, leaving a 6-inch yarn tail to sew the ribbing together. Working from inside the hat (as to hide the seam), sew ribbing end and beginning together. Fasten off and weave in end.
Foundation:
Using white, ch 25; sl st to beginning ch to form a ring.
Row 2:
Ch 2, hdc in each st around, sl st to top of beginning ch 2.
Row 1:
Rows 3-4:
Ear Tassels:
Ch 2, hdc in each ch around, sl st to top of beginning ch 2.
Repeat Row 2 twice; fasten off and leave a 2-ft long yarn tail. Center the yarn tail for the bow and wrap the yarn around the middle as many times as possible to achieve the appropriate look; secure in the back of the bow and use the remaining yarn tail to sew the bow onto the hat.
Measure and cut one 14-inch strand of each color yarn used. Fold in half and cut at center to form two groups of 7-inch long strands. Carefully weave through squared tips of hat and tie to form the ear tassels.
