Explore Slope in This Hands-On Way Using Paper Airplanes Use the following worksheet to investigate slope by tracking the glide path of a paper airplane. Have all the students make a plane or two. Have them launch their airplane from a slightly raised surface over level ground. Here, the glide path will occur in quadrant I as a negative slope. Determine the slope by comparing the change in Y value to the change in x value. Rise, or in this case the drop will be a negative integer: Height at launch to the ground (0). Run will be a positive value: the horizontal distance covered from the launch point to the landing point. Calculate the slope (m).

The Y intercept “b” will be the launch point ( 0, Launch height). Graph the launch point “b” as well as the x intercept to determine the line that represents the average glide path. The line will represent the glide path of the plane. The slope involves the drop over the horizontal distance covered.
