Teaching Assistant (Part-time, Temporary Employment) 30-35 hours/week Undergraduate: $16.73/hr Graduate: $17.50/hr June 13, 2016 – July 21, 2016 (between 8:00am – 4:00pm, Mon-Thu)
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Pre-College Academy (PCA) is a six-week college-preparatory summer program hosted by the Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP) at the University of California, Berkeley. EAOP partners with schools, districts, community organizations and families to empower underserved students and prepare them for college and career success. For 30 years, PCA has provided intensive academic enrichment for EAOP students from partner high schools throughout the Bay Area. PCA prepares students for academic success in the following school year, including excellence in classes that meet the University of California’s A-G subject requirements and enrollment in Honors and Advanced Placement courses. PCA offers students rigorous coursework, college-style expectations and an environment of challenging academic camaraderie. Students commit to two academic classes, including a Writing course, and a second course in Math (Geometry, Algebra II, PreCalculus), Engineering or a Web Application Course. Writing courses are theme based, drawing on a range of academic disciplines. Examples of courses taught in the past include, Living in the Shadows: Race, Struggle & Identity Politics; Zombie Apocalypse: A Post-Apocalyptic Study of Modern America; Fukù & Zafa: Masculinity, Identity & Oppression. Additionally, students attend weekly activity sessions that may include team building and leadership activities, college counseling, and field trips. All classes are offered on the UC Berkeley campus. WORK SCHEDULE & DUTIES: Primary job duties will take place at UC Berkeley. Teaching Assistants will work in three-person teaching teams, which include a lead instructor and another TA. All TAs will attend training sessions before the start of the program. Each TA will be responsible for the following activities: Attending pre-program trainings and orientations in May (including some Saturdays) Assisting instructor with set up and cleanup of classroom Assisting instructor with classroom management and supervision of small group work Supporting students individually as needed Facilitating lesson plans under the guidance of the instructor Correcting student assignments and entering grades into online database Entering student attendance into online database Assisting in preparation of course materials Holding in-class and lunch-time tutoring sessions/office hours Participating in program evaluation and post-program debriefing Other duties as assigned QUALIFICATIONS: Tutoring/teaching experience in Math (Geometry, Algebra II, or Pre-Calculus), Writing/English/Social Sciences, Engineering, or working with students on Web Application development. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups of high school students Experience working with low-income, first-generation college-bound students Ability to facilitate small-group learning and to assist students with in-class assignments Reliable, organized, and possesses strong communication skills Ability to communicate in a language other than English is a plus Ideal candidates will have a comfort with and demonstrated commitment to diversity, social justice, and fostering an inclusive, multicultural environment TO APPLY: Submit completed application, unofficial college transcript(s), résumé and if applying to be a College Writing TA (please also submit a short 1-2 page(s) writing sample) to Nikko Roxas via email at
