Honesty Read “Ruthie and the (Not So) Teeny Tiny Lie” by Laura Rankin. In this story, Ruthie finds a teeny tiny camera. Ruthie loves teeny tiny things and decides the keep the camera. The problem is that the camera does not belong to her. She tells her teacher and the other children that the camera belongs to her, but the guilt of knowing that she is not telling the truth causes her to feel badly. At the end of the book, Ruthie learns that honesty IS the best policy. Other books that teach honesty: “Sam Tells Stories” by Thierry Robberecht, “The Berenstein Bears and the Truth” by Stan Berenstein, and “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” Here are a few discussion starters to do with your students: 1.

Your Mom said that you must not go outside because it is muddy and she does not want mud in the house. She leaves the room and you notice that you left your ball out in the back yard. You decide to run out and get it while your Mom is gone. When your Mom comes back to the room, she sees muddy footprints on the floor. What should you do? It is literacy center time and you are to do a project at your center. But it is hard and you don’t really understand how to do it, so you talk to the person at your table instead. When center time is over, your teacher asks you for your project. What should you do? The person sitting at the table next to you has a red pencil and you love red. She gets up and you see the red pencil that she is using. You decide to switch your blue pencil for her red pencil. She comes back and asks “Where is my pencil?” What should you do? As you are lining up for recess, someone steps on your toe by accident and you push him so hard he falls. The teacher comes back to ask what happened. What should you do? A classmates brings her uncle , who is a pilot, to school. He took her for a plane ride and she describes the fun she had while flying. You wish that you had an uncle who was a pilot, so you make up a story about YOUR uncle who flies an airplane, too, and that he has given you lots of rides on his plane. The teacher says “I didn’t know you had an uncle who was a pilot. Can you bring him in for show and tell, too?” What should you do?
