Permissions given by the Consilium for the use of ad experimentum lectionaries, 1965-69 This information has been taken from the following articles in Notitiae: “Ordo lectionum per ferias”, Notitiae 2 (1966) 6-7; “Ordo lectionum per ferias”, Notitiae 2 (1966), 76; “Ordo lectionum per ferias”, Notitiae 2 (1966), 168-171; “Decreta quibus ordo lectionum per ferias conceditur”, Notitiae 2 (1966), 264; “Decreta quibus ordo lectionum per ferias conceditur”, Notitiae 2 (1966), 324; “Ordo lectionum per ferias a Consilio propositus”, Notitiae 3 (1967), 9-14; “Decreta quibus ordo lectionum per ferias conceditur”, Notitiae 3 (1967), 112; “Decreta quibus ordo lectionum per ferias conceditur”, Notitiae 3 (1967), 334-335; “Decreta quibus ordo lectionum per ferias conceditur”, Notitiae 3 (1967), 426-427; “Decreta quibus ordo lectionum conceditur”, Notitiae 4 (1968), 234-235; “Decreta quibus ordo lectionum conceditur”, Notitiae 4 (1968), 278; “Decreta quibus ordo lectionum conceditur”, Notitiae 4 (1968), 359; “Decreta quibus ordo lectionum per ferias conceditur”, Notitiae 5 (1969), 72.
Between 1965 and 1969, the Consilium gave permission to many countries regarding the use of ad experimentum lectionaries for use on weekdays and various occasions (such as confirmations, funerals, weddings, etc.). What follows are two tables detailing nearly all the permissions given: the first table is organised by date, the second alphabetically by country. Tables of the German and French experimental schemes and the Consilium’s 1968 lectionaria particularia (“particular lectionary”) can be found on my blog, “Lectionary Study Aids” (http://catholiclectionary.blogspot.co.uk).1 Note: at least one country, the Netherlands, is missing from the tables below. A. Bugnini mentions that, in a letter from the Secretariat of State dated 28 June 1965, the Dutch bishops, along with the German and Swiss bishops, were given permission to use an experimental lectionary (presumably the German scheme at first: cf. The Reform of the Liturgy 1948-1975 [Collegeville, MN: Liturgical Press, 1990], 407). However, for some reason the decree authorising this is not mentioned in any of the above articles in Notitiae.

Unfortunately, I have not yet managed to track down a copy of the Consilium’s experimental lectionary (noted in these tables as ‘Consilium’), which was by and large given to conferences that did not request permission to use the German or French schemes. Please get in touch with me at

Canada was also given permission to use the French experimental order (6 Sep 1966). Though it is not explicitly stated in Notitiae, I would assume that English-speaking parts of Canada used the German scheme and Frenchspeaking parts used the French order. 2
Lat. Congus-Leopoldpolitana; the Archdiocese of Léopoldville, as it was then known, would receive a name change on 30 May 1966 (see n. 10 below). 3

In Notitiae 2 (1966), 264, the Philippines was mistakenly declared to be using the French experimental scheme rather than the German one (cf. Notitiae 3 [1967], 14, fn. 2) 7
Footnote: “The Spanish Liturgical Commission substantially accepts the order [of readings] of the German Bishops, with small changes in the division of pericopes as well as the introduction of some readings from the sacred books not covered in the German order” (Lat: Commissio liturgica hispanica ordinem Episcoporum Germaniae substantialiter accepit, parvis quandoque immutationibus inductis in sectione pericoparum et aliquibus lectionibus introductis e sacris libris in ordine germanico non recensitis). 8

The diocese is called Tarbes and Lourdes (Lat. Tarbiensis et Lapurdensis), so I assume this permission is for the shrine at Lourdes only. This would seem to make sense, given that permission was only asked to use the readings for Masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary found in the Lectionaria particularia. 9
