Wave on a String PhET Simulation

Open an internet browser and either search for “Phet Wave on a String” OR go directly to: http://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/wave-on-astring/latest/wave-on-a-string_en.html Procedure:  You will see this screen when you first open the → simulation  In the upper left select “oscillate.” In the upper right select “no end.” In the middle of the screen choose “Slow Motion,” turn “Damping” to “None” and “Pause.” The screen should look like the second picture.  On the bottom of the screen move the “Frequency” slider or use the left arrow to shift it to 1.00 Hz. Adjust the “Amplitude” down to 0.25 m and then press “Play.”  Continue to adjust only the Amplitude according to the table below: Amplitude (cm) Frequency (Hz) 0.25 1.00 Hz 0.5 1.00 Hz 0.75 1.00 Hz 1.0 1.00 Hz 1.25 1.00 Hz As you adjust the Amplitude with a constant Frequency look for any changes in speed or wavelength. Answer these questions in complete sentences: 1. Does the speed of the wave change if the Amplitude changes? Explain your answer.

2. Did the wavelength of the wave change if the Amplitude changes? Explain your answer.  

Set the Amplitude to 1.0 cm, the Frequency to 0.5 Hz and then press “Play.” Continue to adjust only the Frequency according to the table below: Amplitude (cm) Frequency (Hz) 1.0 0.5 1.0 1.0 1.0 1.5 1.0 2.0 1.0 2.5 1.0 3.0 As you adjust the Frequency with a constant Amplitude look for any changes in speed or wavelength.

Answer these questions in complete sentences: 3. Does the speed of the wave change if the Frequency changes? Explain your answer.

4. Did the wavelength of the wave change if the Frequency changes? Explain your answer.

On the bottom right select “Ruler” and you should see two rulers. If you click on the ruler on the left you can raise it up so that the wave will start at 1 cm. Your screen should look like the one at the right: Click play and watch the wave for a bit and look for the highest and the lowest point of the wave.

Answer these questions in complete sentences: 5. How high does the wave rise above where it started? 6. How low does the wave drop below where it started? 

Adjust the Frequency of the wave leaving everything else the same. Adjust it both up and down and observe what happens with the wave.

Answer this question in complete sentences: 7. Does changing the frequency change the amplitude of the wave? Explain your answer.  

Select “Timer” on the bottom right. You’ll need to time a wave from when it starts at its highest point on the far right until that same crest crosses the 6 cm mark on the far right. Practice timing the wave until you feel confident with the results. Keeping the Amplitude the same, choose a frequency and time one wave until it passes 6 cm. Fill the table below: Frequency (Hz) Time (s) Distance (cm) Speed (cm/s) 6 6 6 Calculate the speed in the last column of your table by dividing the distance by the time for each of the frequencies you chose.

Answer this question in complete sentences: 8. Does changing the frequency of the wave change the speed of the wave? Explain your answer using your data.

9. Did changing the frequency of the wave change the wavelength of the wave? Explain your answer using your data.

10. Is it possible for two waves, in the same material, to have different frequencies? Different wavelengths? Different speeds? Explain your answers.
