OUTLINE FOR PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN AND BEYOND Paula V. Withrow & Alan Cohlmeyer FALL 2017 4 WEEKS Week One: Introduction of Pirates. Defining the subject: ships, clothing, weapons, flags and banners, governance. 16th European privateers turned pirates will be covered including Jambe de Bois; Jean Fleury; Grainne O’Malley and Alwida. Week Two: The Caribbean - Places and Pirates. The focus will be on the attraction the area had for pirates in the 17th Century and a bit beyond. Men and women such as John Rackman, Anne Bonny, Mary Read; Henry Morgan; Stede Bonnet; Edward Low; John Roberts; Woodes Rogers; Charles Vane; Henry Every Week Three: Africa, Indian Ocean, China and Madagascar pirates as well as Treasures to be Found: we will include Ching Shih, Rahmah ibn Jabir al-Jalahimah; Captain Kidd and others. Week Four: Moving to America: Pirates and Privateers during the American Revolution, Civil War, and the War of 1812. This week the focus will be on the Barbary Coast and Thomas Jefferson; Black Beard and Eric Cobham/Maria Lindsey; Lafitte and Gasparilla. We will also show the real and the cinematic/literary depictions of pirates over the years.
