Portable Sign Permit Application In 1995 the Oakdale City Council amended Oakdale’s Sign Regulations to permit small, attractive “Portable Business Advertising Signs” to be placed in from of merchants’ businesses throughout the commercial areas of Oakdale. The City’s intent was to provide reasonable opportunities for local business owners and merchants to increase their outdoor advertising exposure to pedestrian traffic through the use of smaller scale A-frame signs. It was expected that these signs would be directed at and scaled to the walking public not passing motorists traveling along Oakdale’s roads. Over the years since the amended sign regulations were adopted, the number of merchants doing business within the City of Oakdale has grown and so has the number of portable business signs. While most of these signs conform to existing standards, there are many which are inconsistent with the original intent of City policy makers. Rather than eliminate this problem by prohibiting the use of portable advertising signs entirely, the Oakdale City Councils has elected to implement procedural changes that would allow the Department of Community Development to more closely monitor the use, placement and appearance of A-frame signs. By increasing our efforts in this regard it is our hope to balance the desire of local merchants to use this form of advertising with the City’s need to maintain an aesthetically pleasing environment for the citizens of Oakdale.

1.

All portable signs require a permit from the Community Development Department prior to placement.

2.

Portable signs must be no smaller than 24x36inches and no larger than 36x60inches

3.

Portable signs may not be placed in any area where they interfere with the use of public sidewalks, access ramps or where they may block the clear vision of pedestrians or vehicles as determined by the Oakdale Community Development Department.

Portable signs may be placed on a wooden, vinyl or metal frame structure and must: a. display the name of the business (the sign may also include products sold or offered by the business) b. be finished in appearance c. have professionally produced lettering and background No banners may be attached to the portable signs but balloons may be attached so long as the sign and balloon combination does not exceed the allowed sign size.

Each business is allowed one sign per entrance which must be place within fifteen (15) feet of the primary public entrance or occupied building space. No business may have more than two (2) portable signs.

Signs can be displayed out doors only during business hours.

This sign displays the business name, is finished in appearance with professional looking lettering and background. This sign is placed within 15 feet of the entry door of the business advertised. This sign does not interfere with pedestrian use of the sidewalk or obstruct the view of traffic.

NOT PERMITTED

These signs should not be placed on the side walk in the way of pedestrian traffic. These signs do not display the name of the business. These signs are more that 15’ from the business entrance.
