Mode of delivery A distance education programme delivered mainly through print materials but supported by facilitator led contact sessions. Interactive activities include workbook activities and community activities that will be assessed through study guides, session workbooks, assignments and evidence based portfolio tasks. The programme will be finally assessed by submitting an integrated assessment portfolio of evidence of the learning in each of the six household food security modules. Programme implementation The programme will be implemented with the help and support of networks of government programmes, NGOs and CBOs running initiatives within communities who it is anticipated will provide potential tutors and students. The training will be used to add value in the form of new skills to existing initiatives. The Department of Animal Health and Human Ecology at UNISA and the South African Institute for Distance Education (SAIDE), together with a number of other public community development stakeholders facilitated the designing and developing of this programme.
The programme is an accredited UNISA Short Learning Programme and was made possible through donor funding provided by the WK Kellogg Foundation. Credits accumulated on the programme can serve as access credits towards further studies within the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at UNISA.

Motivation for the programme
Target population
Programme structure
The need for training in food and nutrition security is evident from the Millenium Development Goals. The strategies of Nepad, SADC and South Africa also emphasize agricultural development, food and nutrition security. The Agriculture Education and Training Strategy for South Africa emphasizes training in household food security and water harvesting at all educational levels
The programme is designed for individuals from rural and peri-urban areas who have successfully completed an NQF level 4 qualification, a senior certificate or equivalent, and are working in communities as community based development workers and volunteers.
The programme is 72 credits set at NQF level 5 and is offered over two semesters.
It is anticipated that the students will be active community members who are willing to work with individual households to develop food security, health and improved nutrition.
