Project Description: edX course teams have asked for many features ranging from versioning  to easy course re­runs which warrant a refactoring of our course persistence. This refactoring is  a building block for this and many other roadmap features. As part of this project, edX must  restructure the identifiers for both courses and course content.      Benefits:    1. Ability to re­run a course without having to munge the Course IDs.  2. (future) Course content can be versioned beyond just draft and live.  3. (future) Course authors can undo and redo changes made in Studio.     Project Phases:    Phase 1: Refactor edx­platform to use the API described below. These changes will make  edx­platform identifier structure agnostic. (i.e. Opaque Keys) (ETA: Mid­to­late May)  Phase 2: Roll out course re­run feature. This will include ID structure changes as well as  changes to the course persistence (i.e. Split Mongo). (ETA: Late July)    Impact to Researchers:    ● General:  ○ Course/Location IDs for running courses will not change for IDs stored in event  logs and SQL/Mongo dumps provided to Data Czars.   ○ The format of the IDs will remain human readable.   ○ A Python API will be released in Late May to parse these IDs.  ■ edX will release this API in a form easily consumable by both contributions  to the edx­platform as well as stand alone python scripts.   ■ This API will not require access to a network.  ■ Leveraging this API will prevent the need to change such script if the ID  formats change again in the future.  ● After Phase 1, the studio URLs formats will change for all courses. This old format of  URLs in LMS will remain active and will be redirected to the new URLs.  ○ In May, edX strongly recommends that all code introspecting IDs (course,  module, locations, etc…) be updated to leverage this API.   ○ Existing courses will use a new more easily parsable format while new courses  will use the future format. We are actively looking at ways to combine these  formats into a single format. Since the “new format for old courses” are not  persisted/exposed to researchers, we have considered this a non­blocking issue.    ● After Phase 2, Course/Location IDs for newly created courses will change. This includes  identifiers stored in event logs and SQL/Mongo dumps.   ○ The aforementioned API will be able to parse both old and new ID formats.   ● After Phase 2, Course/Location IDs, for previously created courses will not change.  These IDs will remain in the old format in event logs and SQL/Mongo dumps.
