State Runners-Up

1996 Volleyball This year's volleyball team once again surpassed everyone's expectations and returned once again to the Final Four. The Lady Eagles started the year out with high expectations for themselves and with their eyes set on a State Championship. Being the underdogs in District play, they defeated Verona easily. Their next challenge was to defeat school rival Wheaton . After a lot of hard work, they triumphed with the scores of 6-15, 15-11 , 15-4 and received the opportunity to move on to Sectional play. Their first opponent was Billings, a team they defeated in two games. The next game was to face Lockwood, who had prevailed during regular season play. In what proved to be a tough match, the Lady Eagles pulled out a victory to have another chance at a first place trophy.

60 • Sports

The ladies were sent off with an assembly and wished all the best of luck as they headed off to Warrensburg and the campus of CMSU. During pool play, the Lady Eagles defeated Nodaway-Holt soundly, split two games with Osceola, and were defeated by defending state champion Bernie. By a slim margin of only two points, the Lady Eagles could return to the championship game and face the Bernie Mules. Knowing victory would be a tough job, they took the challenge on headstrong. Bernie took over and defeated the team in the first match , but determined notto give up, the ladies came back in the second match and strongly defeated their opponents. Bernie then regained its momentum and defeated the Lady Eagles with the scores of 15-7, 1315, 15-0. Even though they didn't win the state championship, the ladies earned the respect of many area people.
