PEDIATRIC CANCER-V SCHOLAR AWARD Application Instructions
PURPOSE OF AWARD: The V Scholar Award supports young tenure-track faculty early in their cancer research career by funding projects that are either laboratory-based fundamental research or translational research. The total amount of the grant is $200,000 awarded in two annual installments of $100,000, each. Only direct costs of the research are supported by this award.
WHO MAY APPLY?
Each invited institution may submit one nominee to apply for this pediatric call. The single nominee may apply in either the V Scholar or the Translational program type for support in this pediatric cancer research focused call for applications. Please indicate on the Nomination form which program type (V Scholar or Translational) your nominee will be applying to. This determines the application form they will be offered. Note: This pediatric call is distinct from the “all cancers” call for V Scholars and Translational awards (non-pediatric specific) which will have a separate invited call for applications.
Special Focus area: Pediatric cancer research.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Pediatric V Scholar Eligibility Criteria: 2017 Pediatric V Scholar -Institution Eligibility (see separate info sheet for Pediatric Translational award type): Only research institutions who received this emailed invitation may submit a nominee as their candidate to submit an application. Other affiliates of the institution who did not receive the email are not eligible to nominate an applicant. Institutions must be non-profit research facilities in the US or Canada.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA continued: 2017 Pediatric V Scholar- Applicant Eligibility: All nominated applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible to submit an application: Applicant must by nominated by their Cancer Center Director if the research institution is a cancer center. If the research institution is not a cancer center, then the dean, provost or another other senior research official who is responsible for the internal nominee selection process may make the nomination. We will not review unsolicited applications. Applicant must be employed at a non-profit research institution (e.g., 501c3, Section 170). Applicant must have at least 2 years post-doctoral (MD or PhD) fellowship training. For MDs, a minimum of one year is acceptable if only one year is required for the specialty. By the Due Date of the Application, applicants must have all the following: o

Hold a tenure-track faculty position as an assistant professor at their cancer research institution. Non-promotable, adjunct, affiliated, temporary, part-time or acting faculty positions are not eligible for this grant competition. Have been appointed to their first full-time assistant professor position within the last 5 years, and not yet been promoted to Associate Professor. Clinical scientists are eligible if the research institution can demonstrate that it will fully support the research applicant (e.g., dedicated lab space, start-up funds, dedicated research time). Applicants must be either US Citizens or be a permanent legal resident in the US.
Applicant can NOT already have been awarded an RO1 or RO1-equivalent grants. As of the Due Date of the Application, applicants who have been awarded RO1 equivalent grants (Project leader on an NIH multi-investigator grant, ACS) as principal investigators or as co-leader at the time of application submission are not eligible for consideration as a V Scholar. In addition, applicants cannot be a co-leader on a SPORE project or (co)PI of the following NIH grant mechanisms: U01, DP1, DP2, R37, R23. In addition, principal investigators for research project grants (RPGs), analogous to NIH/NCI R01 awards, would be ineligible.
NEXT STEPS TO NOMINATE YOUR APPLICANT: Next Steps to nominate your applicant: Complete the attached Nomination Information Form and email the form to
[email protected] by March 7, 2017. The nomination form includes the signature of the Cancer Center Director (or similar high ranking research official if there is no cancer center director) who is responsible for the nomination and ensuring that the candidate meets all eligibility requirements. We will issue log in credentials to applicants as we receive nomination forms. Letter of Recommendation: Your applicant will be asked to upload a letter of recommendation when they submit the application on-line. Please do not submit this now. The letter of recommendation is different from the nomination form needed for log in credentials. The letter of recommendation that you will provide to the applicant to upload with their application should include the following points: Your nomination process to identify the applicant Why you chose this applicant The institutional resources that will be available to the applicant The mentoring environment that will be available to the applicant If the research is translational in nature with patient contact- how will patient advocacy training/communication be incorporated into their training Your Pediatric Cancer V Scholar Applicant will be asked to submit a full CV with all publications (not NIH Biosketch) and a list of other awarded research funding with their application on-line.

PEDIATRIC CANCER-TRANSLATIONAL AWARD Application Instructions
PURPOSE OF AWARD: The V Foundation seeks to support translational research projects within the scope of pediatric cancer research. The Translational Research Award is a $600,000 grant awarded in three annual installments of $200,000. Indirect costs up to a maximum of 10% within the total award are permitted. Definition of a translational research project: Translational projects should move a novel strategy from the laboratory into a human clinical trial or use specimens from a clinical trial to develop biomarkers or mechanisms. The research should apply in some direct way to human beings within the time frame of less than 3 years. If biomarker research is undertaken, a validation set or independent clinical trial is essential. A plan for biomarker validation, if applicable, must be included in any proposal. The endpoint of the project should be the planning or initiation of a new clinical trial. We welcome applications in all pediatric cancer types. While not required, we have a special interest in supporting immune oncology and immunotherapy research, when applicable.

By the Due Date of the Application, applicants who will lead this research team must have all the following: o Be scientists who hold a tenure-track faculty position at their cancer research institution. Non-promotable, adjunct, affiliated, temporary, part-time or acting faculty positions are not eligible for Principal Investigator nomination to lead the Translational Research Team. o Applicants must be either US Citizens or have a legal permit to work in the USA (either temporary or permanent).
