B. Tech III Year II Semester Examinations, December-January, 2011-2012 DESIGN OF MACHINE MEMBERS – II (MECHANICAL ENGINEERING) Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 80 Answer any five questions All questions carry equal marks --Explain Bearing characteristic number and bearing modulus for Journal Bearing with the help of graph between µ and (ZN/p). Classify Ball and Roller bearings with the help of neat sketches and also list out the advantages and disadvantages. [8+8]

Design an ‘I’ section connecting rod for a petrol engine based on the data given. Diameter of the Piston = 110mm, Mass of the reciprocating parts=2kg, length of the connecting rod from center to center = 325mm, stroke length = 150mm. R.P.M =1500 with possible over speed of 2500. Compression ratio=4:1, maximum explosion pressure = 2.5N/mm2. [16]

3.a) b)

Draw and explain Trunk type piston for I.C engine. List out and explain the design considerations for a piston.

4.

Derive the equations to find out the stress developed in helical spring of circular wire subjected to an axial load with the help of diagrams. [16]

5.a) b)

Explain advantages and disadvantages of V belts over flat belt drive. A pulley is driven by a flat belt running at a speed of 600 m /min. The coefficient of friction between the pulley and the belt is 0.3 and the angle of lap is 1600. If the maximum tension in the belt is 700N. Find the power transmitted by a belt. [10+6]
