8th Grade Social Studies U.S. History Class Standards

Course Description

Students in grade eight study the ideas, issues, and events from the framing of the Constitution up to World War I, with an emphasis on America’s role in the war. After reviewing the development of America’s democratic institutions founded on the Judeo-Christian heritage and English parliamentary traditions, particularly the shaping of the Constitution, students trace the development of American politics, society, culture, and economy and relate them to the emergence of major regional differences. They learn about the challenges facing the new nation, with an emphasis on the causes, course, and consequences of the Civil War. They make connections between the rise of industrialization and contemporary social and economic conditions.

Essay final drafts completed in blue or black ink only, unless typed. Typed papers must be 1.5 or double space, 12 point font, Times Roman or Arial font only. Margins should not be changed from the automatic settings of 1 inch top, bottom, and sides. Do not scribble or draw on your work. Folded or crumpled papers will not be accepted.

If a student does not submit an assignment on the due date, late work will be accepted for 10 school days. Within the 10 school days that late work is accepted there will be a reduction of 50% from the original possible score. If a student misses work due to an absence, the student will be allowed 1 day for everyday that the student missed from school to make up the work. It is the student’s responsibility to email or meet with me when they return to school. Due to hardships special consideration for extension may be made on a case by case basis.
