SCHOOL DAY Background Schools in the Calgary Catholic School District must operate in accordance with the requirements of the School Act and the Guide to Education and in keeping with the administrative procedures and expectations of the district. Procedures 1. School Hours: The times for the commencement and conclusion of the instruction day shall be set by individual schools: 1.1
The time selected must be administratively possible and appropriate for optimal teaching and learning, as well as, transportation needs in the opinion of the chief superintendent or designate.

School hours are based on parameters of the Guide to Education, as well as, Alberta Education initiatives including High School Redesign.
2. Classroom Instruction Time: 2.1
A minimum of 950 hours of instructional time per year must be provided for elementary and junior high students and a minimum of 1000 hours per year for high school students. At least 475 hours of program activities shall be offered each child in a kindergarten program.

Instructional time does not include: teacher convention days, professional development days, parent/teacher conferences, teacher planning days, staff meetings, statutory and school authority-declared holidays, lunch breaks, breaks between classes, recesses, time taken for the registration of students and extracurricular activities.
3. If a school wishes to substantially modify its hours of operation, the proposed changes must be reviewed for feedback from the area superintendent. If supported by the area superintendent, school council, parents/legal guardians and staff are informed of the proposed changes prior to implementing the revised schedule. Where appropriate and necessary, feedback from school council, parents/legal guardians and staff needs to be considered during this change process. 4. Recess break(s) is determined at each school based on the needs of the local school community.

5. Daily Physical Activity: To increase students’ physical activity levels, schools shall ensure that all students in grades 1 to 9 are physically active for a minimum of 30 minutes a day through activities that are organized by the school. This Alberta Education policy is based on the belief that healthy students are better able to learn and that school communities provide supportive environments for students to develop positive habits needed for a healthy, active lifestyle. 6. Regular and year-round calendars are developed at the district level. Any alterations to these calendars shall be communicated by direct notice from the chief superintendent or designate.
