SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIALS SELECTION AND ADOPTION Background The district is legally responsible for the selection of supplementary instructional materials. Procedures 1. Supplementary materials for instructional purposes will be selected by the appropriate Instructional Services personnel in consultation with the superintendent, Instructional Services. Final decisions on the selection of supplementary materials will rest with the superintendent, Instructional Services. 2. It is the responsibility of the Instructional Services Team to select instructional materials of the highest quality which are in alignment with the district, Alberta Education and Catholic teachings. 3. In accordance with this, instructional materials will be selected to: 3.1
Enrich and support the curriculum, taking into consideration the diversified interests, abilities and maturity levels of the students, and their ability to provide continuity to the curriculum in the instance of basic textbooks.
3.2
Stimulate growth in factual knowledge and provide background knowledge that will enable students to make intelligent judgments.
3.3
Enhance literary appreciation and foster aesthetic values.
3.4
Present various viewpoints on many subjects that will assist in development of critical judgment and perceptions.
4. The value and impact of any textbook, learning commons or other instructional material will be judged as a whole, taking into account the purpose of the material rather than individual, isolated expressions or incidents of the work.
