World Studies One and World One Honors Mrs. Cara Walton
[email protected] (540) 433-2651 www.mrswaltonsblog.blogspot.com Schedule Usually here before school by 7:15, I will be in my room or the Social Studies Office Block 1, Block 2, and Block 3: Room 510 Block 4: Planning: Room 507 I am sometimes available after school, but I co-sponsor the Forensics team and may have a practice. If you need to stay after school, please see me to arrange a time. Materials Needed Pencil or pen every day. Please use dark ink; neon or metallic colors are pretty, but are really hard to read. 3-Ring Binder, At least 1 inch, preferably larger. If you have a large binder for all of your classes that is fine, so long as you have a section for History. Notebook Paper Textbooks will be kept in the classroom. Assignments which require use of the textbook must be completed during class, ELT, or before/after school. I will scan maps for each chapter and post them on the blog where they can be accessed online if necessary. Rules, Expectations, and Honor Code #1 Respect other people and their property. Be nice, it doesn’t hurt and makes class much more fun for everyone.
#2 Food and Drink are okay so long as they do not cause a distraction or make a mess. If I start finding a mess then this will stop. Gum is okay so long as I don’t see it, hear it, or start finding fresh gum under the desks.
#3 Cell Phones and Electronic devices are to be away and out of sight during instructional time (not sitting on top of your desk or hidden in your lap or backpack). If you’re working on independent work, you may listen to music, but you should not be texting, checking social media, taking pictures, or playing games on phones or electronic devices. You may use cell phones for instructional purposes only. If you are using a phone or device inappropriately, you will be asked to put it away. If you fail to comply, it will be considered insubordination and will result in confiscation of your phone for the remainder of the period, a home contact, and a disciplinary referral to the office.
#4 Cheating and Plagiarism will not be tolerated Students may not copy a homework assignment or paper from another student with the exception of missed notes. If a student is caught copying an assignment, the student copying the assignment will receive a zero and the student allowing the other student to copy will also receive a zero on the assignment. Students caught copying answers from another student or using technology to cheat on an assessment, including tests and quizzes, must complete an alternate assessment or they will receive a zero on the assignment. When a student is writing an essay, they must produce original work. Students who are found to have copied and pasted work from the internet or other sources will redo the essay or receive a zero. Honors students are expected to write one essay per chapter, this will be a major grade for each chapter and will count as part of their test average. If you wish to have a quote from a source online, the item must be in quotes or block text and have a citation. If you’re unsure on how to do citation, please see me or a member of the library staff for help. If you’re unsure, always ask, we are here to help. Further expectations for how to write essays will be covered in class before the first essay. All essays must be typed and submitted electronically as a World Document or in Google Docs. If you don’t have an account, see me and we will get one set up for you. Continued on back

Grading Scale Harrisonburg City Schools uses a 10-point grading scale 90-100 A 80-89 B 70-79 C 60-69 D 59 and below F Grading policy All assignments for each unit are counted as full credit until the test for that unit. After a test has been given, assignments will be accepted for partial credit (maximum of 60%) until the end of the grading period. It is best to keep up with work so that there is not a huge rush to catch up at the end. Assignments will consist of note sheets and the questions and summaries which are part of the notes assignment, maps, and extra readings and worksheets. I am making an effort to have a more student-centered class with more individual responsibility, so it is vital that you keep up with your work and try not to get behind. If you have an emergency or illness and need extended time, please contact me and we can work out a schedule to get you caught up.
