Term 4 Week 9
Message from Trish Ryder 2017 is almost at an end and once again it will be time to say goodbye to our Year 6s as they head off to high school and their next adventure. At Kalamunda Primary they have studied Bahasa Indonesia and in 2018 some of them may continue with Indonesian and others may choose another language. No matter which language students study, learning another language fosters their ability to think and reflect about the workings of language, to develop mental flexibility and problem solving strategies and develops cultural awareness with understanding of another country and respect for differences. It can open doors to many employment opportunities in areas of government, education, business, tourism, travel, law, engineering, medicine and law.

Indonesia is our closest neighbour and many families from our school holiday in Bali. Each island in Indonesia has its own language but the national language is Bahasa Indonesia which all the students in Indonesia study. For anyone travelling to Indonesia (as long as Mt Agung doesn’t erupt!) I have a small pamphlet which may be of use. It gives some common phrases and vocabulary to use, places to visit, activities for children and websites. I have already handed this pamphlet out to students when they have told me they are going to Indonesia but parents are welcome to come to the library to get a pamphlet from me and have a look at our Indonesian classroom. To all of our school community “Selamat Hari Natal dan Tahun Baru.” ( Happy Christmas and New Year) Trish Ryder Indonesian teacher.
Room 11 Assembly The Year 1's in Room 11 were so excited to perform a play at last week's Assembly called 'The Year Santa Claus got Mixed Up'. Luckily, the Mythical Creatures (Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, Sandman, Cupid and EVEN the Grinch) were available to help save the day. We loved the audience participating in our play. A very Merry Christmas to everyone from Room 11.
Pre-Primary Excursion- Caversham Wildlife Park Yesterday the Pre-Primary students went to Caversham Wildlife Park to celebrate our Australia theme this term. We had a fabulous day looking, touching and feeding some native animals as well as learning all about animals and their role on a farm. We had an absolute ball and thank you to our parent helpers that came along too! Miss Nash and Miss Charteris
Academic Excellence Awards Congratulations to four of our outstanding students that were invited by Kalamunda SHS to participate in the Academic Excellence program in year five and six. Each year Kalamunda SHS ask us to nominate the top performers in year three based on testing and report grades. They then use this data to choose and invite outstanding students into the program. It is a very competitive process and high credit to these four amazing young ladies.
Congratulations to Kate Jozus-Leitane, Olivia Barrable, Lilly Ajduk and Tilda Bennett
Fire Truck visit Rooms Senior 2 and 15 have been learning about fire safety and were lucky enough to have a visit from the local Kalamunda Fire and Rescue brigade. There was plenty of fun to be had but there were also some important messages which were delivered, including: *To know and practise your fire escape plan in the event of a structure fire *How to safely exit a building on fire *Understanding how fire is a tool and not a toy
