Spring Revival Coming! Pastor Urges Preparation For Week of Prayer / Revival Due Here at End of March

PASTOR JEFF BROWN

Dr. Phillip Samaan spoke at our church last March, but my favorite book of his is "Christ's Way of Reaching People." In that book he says that the secret of a vibrant Christian life, and the secret of successful witnessing, is intimate and consistent communion with Jesus. I sometimes call it PDD -- personal daily devotions, but maybe that's not the best way to say it. It needs to be more than just an hour (usually less!) at the beginning of the day. How about ICCC? Intimate and Consistent and Constant Communion with Jesus. That's what we need. Ellen White says, "Our greatest need is converted families, parents, and children..." * In Dr. Samaan's book, which has recently been updated and is now called "Christ's Method Alone," he breaks down the well-known statement in Ministry of Healing: "Christ's method alone will give true success in reaching the people. The Saviour mingled with men as one who desired their good. He showed His sympathy for them, ministered to their needs, and won their confidence. Then He bade them, 'Follow Me.'" - p. 143. Intimate - We first must connect with Jesus, daily, hourly, moment by moment. Intimately--He knows all about us, there's nothing we can tell Him that He doesn't already know. And He loves us anyway, intimately, passionately, always. "Pray without ceasing!" "Never stop praying" the

New Living Translation puts 1 Thessalonians 5:17. Consistent - I am a breakfast-eater. if I don't eat shortly after rising, I'm very hungry, maybe irritable, and "shaky." If I skipped breakfast for a week, I'd probably get over it. We must get into the habit of beginning the day with Jesus, consistently, every day, without fail, absolutely, never missing our time with Him. If we consistently spend time in true intimacy with Jesus, reading His Word, praying, meditating, journalin for 30 days in a row, we would form a new habit, the healthiest habit we could ever have. Constant - When we spend time with Jesus, we must focus, what are we struggling with in our lives? What is His answer to our struggles, to our issues, to our problems? When we finish our quiet time with Him in the mornings, do we invite Him to go with us throughout the day? Do we pause whenever we're stressed, upset, challenged by the events of the day... do we pause and think of Him, draw strength from Him, ask Him how He

would handle this? WWJD was a very popular idea ten years ago, it's still a good question to ask today: What Would Jesus Do? Remind yourself that you're still connected to Him, and just like you'd text a friend for advice, He has counsel for you that is much wiser than any human can give. Communion - Communion means to share thoughts, feelings, experiences in common with someone else. Enoch walked with God. Enoch shared every experience of his day with His Lord. Jesus shared His daily experiences with His Father. John 5:30 says "I can of Myself do nothing.... I do not seek My own will, but the will of the Father who sent Me." The Message paraphrase puts it interestingly: "I can't do a solitary thing on My own. I listen, then I decide." Who was He listening to? The same One He was sharing all of His life with--the Father. I long for that communion with Jesus, where I won't do a solitary thing on my own, but will listen carefully to hear His voice, through Scripture that I have read, memorized, internalized, Continued On the Back Page

Renovation Of Kitchen Under Way MYRA SARGEANT This Sabbath, poke your head into the room across from the sanctuary and catch a glimpse of the "facelift" that our multipurpose room is receiving. It has been coming in stages over the past few months. It started with a decision to change the carpet. Anyone who has ever been involved in a remodeling project knows that "easy things are hard" and sometimes a solution to one problem, will only serve to uncover another problem! What you will see evolving over the next few weeks is the culmination of hours of discussion, shopping, labor and prayerful consideration by many, of how to be good stewards of the funds donated by this church family and allotted for this project. Making the decision to change the carpet brought a cascade of other projects that needed attention as well. In addition to new carpet, paint, and window treatments, you will be able to enjoy new cabinets and appliances. Adding a second microwave will make heating up those yummy casseroles go twice as fast. A new room divider will also be installed that will provide an enhanced sound barrier between the two Sabbath School classes. We will be adding artwork and wall decorations and if anyone would like to make a special donation for this purpose, please contact Myra Sargeant. Special thanks to my painting buddies, Rae Miller and Bozena Wentland. And many thanks to Richard and Eric Schoonard for lending us their talents in cabinet making and electrical work as well as carpet installation. I enjoyed working

with each of them on this project and appreciate their dedication. Rae, and my hubby, Mark, each deserve a special medal for being "sounding boards" for me! As our church moves forward with its renovation projects, many decisions will have to be made in the beginning that will be building blocks for future decisions. Our goal is to honor God and maintain His house in good repair with things that are functional, tasteful, and reflect how much we cherish what He has done for us. Prayerfully consider what your contribution will be as projects unfold in the near future. Be the blessing! #

Eric and Shanna Chavez

Eric Chavez, a senior theology student at SAU has been hired by the Apison church as part-time youth pastor and is expected to serve until his graduation in December this year. He will be in charge of the church’s summer Adventure Camp. He and his wife Shanna were welcomed into the Apison church family on Sabbath, February 16. He preached the sermon that day. Williams Family Reports On LCA Valentine Banquet OLIVIA, ADRIAN and KAREN WILLIAMS

Olivia, Grade 2: It was fun at the Valentine Banquet. I think everyone in the school was there. I got to help serve the tables. I served tables 8, 9, and 10. Mrs. Allen was at one of the tables. I served Mrs. Allen first always! It was fun and I had a great time there. I hope you liked it too, and everyone else who was there.

years. It struck me that our church family really does love its school. Maybe that is why our own family feels so at home here. As a mom, I want to thank every church member who attended the banquet in support of our school. As valuable as it was as a fund-raiser, it was even more valuable for the love and care it demonstrated to our school kids. They know you care about them, and that is a never-forgotten gift. Thank you! #

Photos from the Valentine Banquet

Adrian, Grade 6: The banquet was awesome with the decorations. I was excited when I came to help with the banquet. I learned to be careful and polite when serving food. I liked all of it, but most of all I liked to see the people happy! Having friends to help me was a good thing, and seeing my family at the banquet was awesome. I was glad to help at the banquet. Karen: Our family attended the LCA Valentine banquet this year for the first time. We are an "all or nothing" family, so we quite literally ALL attended: Greg and I, his parents, our oldest daughter and her husband, our college-age daughter and her boyfriend, and, of course, our two youngest children, Adrian and Olivia, who attend LCA and helped serve the dinner. We occupied an entire table and dressed up for the occasion. It was a lovely evening aboard the SS Lester Coon, bound for Alaska. We dined in real style and enjoyed delicious vegan cuisine. Anita McGrath and her small but dedicated crew of parents did an amazing job of preparing the setting and creating a memorable meal.

Principal Mark Sargeant and His Wife Myra

The scenery alone was worth the trip. (Many thanks to the four families who contributed vacation photos of Alaska.) There was even a photographer on board to take family photos. (Thank you, Cindy Cummings!) But I have to say my favorite part was observing all those beautiful and familiar young faces trotting up and down the table isles. The school children served us with proud smiles and willing hands, taking their part of the evening seriously and reminding all in attendance of the reason for the banquet. As a mother of four, I have been in and out of quite a few schools in the past 17 years. They have all been good schools, and I am grateful for Adventist education in all its forms. But LCA is something special. I couldn't help noticing, while sitting smack in the middle of all those tables, that many who attended the banquet were not even parents of current students at LCA. I saw parents who homeschool their children. I saw a large number of older members whose own children are long past elementary

Thoughts on Matthew 18:15-17 PASTOR JEFF BROWN

As a pastor, I frequently have folks come to me with a complaint about some other member of the congregation. I try to listen, but what I really want to say is this: Jesus has given us counsel for this very situation! If we believe someone is out of line, someone has wronged us, someone needs correction, He tells us: “15 If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. 16 But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses. 17 If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.” This is wonderful advice! If someone has hurt you, gossiped about you, misquoted you, slandered you, done something that a Christian should not do... What does He

MARCH 2013

say? Tell your spouse? ... your best friend? ... one of the elders? Who does He say you should go to? That's right, the very person that needs to hear it! If you tell someone else, you'll feel better. They might say, "Wow, that's terrible." But the person who needs to hear it, THE PERSON WHO NEEDS CORRECTION, THE PERSON WHO HAS SINNED may not even know that he or she is out of line! And how are they going to know if no one tells them. Well, you may say, it's really not that big of a deal. OK, then, don't tell anyone. That's your choice, your logical choice, it's either A or B. It's either significant enough to tell the person who is in the wrong, or it is not. If it is a significant issue, speak up. If it is not, be quiet. Absolutely quiet. So simple, yet so hard to do. I had a member come to me (whether it was here or somewhere else is not at all important). This person brought a couple of other people (skipping step one in Matthew 18:15-17, but that didn't bother me) and told me what I was doing wrong. I was not offended, I was not unhappy, it was good for me. I want to know when I've done something wrong. I want to know when YOU think I've done something wrong. I may not agree with you, but I still want to know. I may share some more facts, and explain why I did it, or what I thought I was doing, but at least communication is taking place, between the one who feels I've erred and the one who erred, or may have erred. Isn't that good? Isn't God good? Doesn't He give good counsel? Certainly He does. This is not about me. I haven't heard any stories about people talking to each other about something the pastor has done wrong. I just think Jesus is truly, as the Bible says, a "Wonderful Counselor" (Isaiah 9:6) and we would be happier if we all followed His wonderful counsel! #

Forgiveness & Awareness PASTOR JEFF BROWN

There are three Registered Sex Offenders that are either members of Apison Seventh-day Adventist church or regularly attend our church. Our church board, with input from the Georgia-Cumberland Conference, and after much study, discussion, and prayer, voted a set of guidelines which these men have signed and agree to follow. We want our church to be a safe place, both for our families and for forgiven sinners. For more information, see any church board member or the pastor. We publish this notice twice a year. What is a Spiritual Partner? AYIYA LeBRUN*

Have you ever been that new member to a church (whether through baptism or transfer) and you didn't know anyone? Well, this happens to many of us at one time or another, whether you are a new pastor or a new member. It can be a lonely feeling. Some people can quickly make friends and acclimate themselves to their new church family just fine while others may struggle and become discouraged. This is why the Apison Church has the Spiritual Partnership program for new members and new transfers. This program was implemented on September 15, 2012 during our last evangelism series. Two people are assigned to be the spiritual partner to each new member in an effort to make their transition easier. Those spiritual partners were to check on the new members and/or transfers weekly, offer prayer and be a person of contact for any questions or prayer requests. You would be surprised how the enemy fiercely attacks after someone gets baptized! After baptism, many new members are vulnerable to discouragement because the enemy wants to convince them that baptism means nothing and changes nothing by throwing many problems their way!! This is a great time to fervently pray not only for the new member but with them. I was re-baptized last year and it was such a comfort when Pastor Jeff and Virginia Holley called just to pray with me. I felt like I was not alone in the spiritual battle; it gave me strength and courage! As Oswald Chambers says, "Prayer does not fit us for the greater work; prayer is the greater work." This Spiritual Partnership program can be great; however, we need volunteers. The spiritual partner can spend as much or as little time with the new member as they are able. The most important part of the program for me

THE APISON APPEAL

was knowing that I had someone that I could call on to pray for me and with me, if and when I needed it. If you are asked to become a spiritual partner, don't say yes just to say you did it or because you feel it is your Christian duty. Say yes because you are a part of this body of Christ (the church) and you want to do your part to help support one another. Let's join hands with our Savior and our new members and finish the work that we have been called to do. "No one's a firmer believer in the power of prayer than the devil; not that he practices it, but he suffers from it." Guy H. King *Ayiya LeBrun was raised Seventh-day Adventist and was re-baptized last September 9 after attending the “Secrets of Hope” meetings. She moved here from Florida about a year ago and started coming to our church with Debbie Gearhart her good friend.

Pastor and Holleys Attend Prayer Conference PASTOR JEFF BROWN

John and Virginia Holley and I went to the Prayer Conference at Cohutta Springs February 15-17, and were greatly blessed by the presentations by Dr. Jo Ann Davidson from the SDA Theological Seminary at Andrews, and Pastor Peter Neri from the Paradise SDA Church in Las Vegas. Friday night, Dr. Davidson told us about her trip to Israel where she was blessed by celebrating the Sabbath with several Jewish families. She learned that they view the Sabbath as "coming all Friday afternoon, and at sundown it's all here." They make special braided hallah bread for the Sabbath, in two loaves, which is a reminder that twice as much manna fell on Friday when the Children of Israel were in the wilderness. She emphasized that Sabbath is not something we do for God, it's a gift He gives to us. An Adventist might say, "We can't work on Sabbath," but her Jewish friends said "I don't have to work on the Sabbath--isn't that wonderful?" At the beginning of the Sabbath, the husband blesses the wife, reading from Song of Solomon or Proverbs 31. The wife blesses the husband, reading Psalm 112 "Blessed is the man who fears the Lord..." The Sabbath is a time renew family ties--the father blesses the children, may they be noble, true, and wise in the ways of God. Sabbath is a day for miracles. She came away convinced that Seventh-day Adventists can be so worried about others breaking the Sabbath that we are wasting the Sabbath. God blesses us, His children, on the Sabbath. She pointed out that Exodus 31:16-17, "observe" the Sabbath, could be interpreted to mean that we are to "make" the Sabbath. The Sabbath is a reminder of creation. God's longest monolog in the Bible is

THE APISON APPEAL

in the book of Job, beginning in chapter 38, where He begins "Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?" which is ironic because there are no foundations! The earth just "hangs" in space, revolving around the sun, which is moving through space also. She also emphasized that the Sabbath commandment and the fifth commandment are the only two that do not begin "Thou shalt not..." and this makes them special, God is emphasizing that remembering His special day and honoring parents, family, are central to the law. On Sabbath morning, Dr. Davidson spoke about the transfiguration in Luke 9, pointing out that Luke was the only Gentile Bible writer. Only Luke mentions that Jesus went up on the mountain to pray--I had never heard that before! She talked about Jesus praying in Gethsemane and how an angel came to comfort Him "In this awful crisis, when everything was at stake, ... the heavens opened, a light shone forth amid the stormy darkness of the crisis hour, and the mighty angel who stands in God’s presence, occupying the position from which Satan fell, came to the side of Christ. The angel came not to take the cup from Christ’s hand, but to strengthen Him to drink it, with the assurance of the Father’s love. He came to give power to the divinehuman suppliant. He pointed Him to the open heavens, telling Him of the souls that would be saved as the result of His sufferings...." DA 693 For church, Dr. Davidson told about the "Old Testament Hall of Fame." We are familiar with Hebrews 11, but in Ezekiel 14, he writes of Noah, Daniel, and Job. What is so special about these men? Noah, like us, has a message about a soon-coming judgment. Job suffered more than anyone except Jesus. Daniel preached the health message, took a stand, and was a man of prayer. Sabbath afternoon, Pastor Peter Neri led us in a study of Isaiah 62:6. He referred us to Desire of Ages, p. 390, where we are instructed to dwell upon the thought contained in a

PAGE 7

passage of Scripture until that thought becomes our own. He also told us about what he does with prayer in his church in Las Vegas. He drives up to a mountain top once each week where he can see the whole valley and prays for the people of Las Vegas. He has a prayer meeting at the church early Wednesday morning, at noon, and in the evening, so that no matter what your work schedule is, all may attend. He has prayer at the church early Sabbath morning, then during his sermon he has a group of people praying for him and the congregation, then they pray after the service with all those who want prayer. The whole weekend was very inspiring and we are now praying about how to implement some of these ideas at our Apison church. We came away impressed with the need to pray more. Ruthie Jacobson was also there and led us in a prayer session. This was a wonderful weekend that the conference has each year. Plan now to attend next year! #

Revival Coming Continued from Front Page meditated upon, then take action as He indicates. Please prepare for our spring revival--prepare by coming close to Jesus. Prepare by praying that Jesus will show you who He is working on, whose heart, in your circle of friends, family, and acquaintances, that the Holy Spirit is touching. Pray for that person, out loud, every day. Why out loud? When our voices say and pray those names, our ears hear the names, and our brain kicks into gear and suggests ways we can touch their lives, ways we can share Jesus with them, acts of kindness we can do to show them Jesus' love. What was the quote that Dr. Samaan based his book on? Jesus hung out with men and women, looking for ways to be a blessing in their lives. He sympathized with them, helped them in many different ways, became their friend. Then He invited them to be one of His followers. Do you want to be like Jesus? Do what He did. We read an interesting quote in prayer meeting the other night: "... there will be no one saved in heaven with a starless crown. If you enter, there will be some soul in the courts of glory that has found an entrance there through your instrumentality. Then why not entreat the Lord to put upon you his Spirit, that you may be able to awaken an interest in the truth in the minds of those around you? Think of your neighbors and friends and relatives who are out of Christ." (Signs of the Times, June 6, 1892) No starless crowns! If we are truly converted, we will have a desire to share the incredible good news of salvation with everyone we meet! We won't want to "hide it under a bushel."

THE APISON APPEAL

May God help us to have a truly ICCC with Jesus, and to, like He did, seek (look for) and save (work for the salvation) of those who do not know Him.
